Omaha Biliew

I know there is always a shady side to recruiting, but with NIL now it seems less necessary although I am not sure of all the facts, so who knows. Perhaps TJ is a young, energetic, charismatic coach, who works hard and connects well with young players and they want to play for him. I think most of these kids are really focused on basketball and don't care all that much about the city etc, as long as they like the coach and his philosophy. Not every player out there is just after money. I don't come here often and comment less, but do enjoy reading the views of many Hawk fans. However, I wish it wasn't (and this happens on both sides) that when a high-level recruit is signed it seems to bring out the view that something shady went on or the kid is not a good person, or not that talented and we didn't want him. I am jealous of Iowa's ability to recruit and develop Offensive line players in football, I think Fran, although somewhat portal-phobic, does a good job identifying talent and produces a high level offense. As a rival fan, I do enjoy seeing his red-faced eruptions occasionally LOL. Kirk is way to calm to be much fun. Carry on!
Not even implying necessarily that there is something shady going on; I'm genuinely curious.

I don't doubt that what you say about Otzelberger and players wanting to play for him is true. I'm not even eliminating the possibility that the reasons you listed could alone explain how well ISU is doing in recruiting.

But just how well ISU has recruited seems out of proportion to what one would intuitively expect for ISU in relation to the state they were in when Prohm left, and what the calibre of coaching hire Otzelberger was, at least initially (he's had an impressive first year but he didn't have much prior head coaching experience and what little he had was a short, unremarkable tenure with UNLV; and his recruiting success started before ISU even played a game with him as head coach).

Is there something shady going on? I don't know. I'm not sure I would care even if there was. But the level you guys have been able to recruit, at least for me, just doesn't make sense at face value and makes me wonder how it's coming about.

TJ was known as a recruiter when he was an assistant at ISU. Before he went to UNLV he was head coach at South Dakota State for three years, winning 70 games, two league titles, two NCAA tournament bids and one NIT. His first team at UNLV finished second in the league and his first recruiting class there was rated best in the league. His second year was covid year, with a lot of missed practice time and the loss of the captain and MVP to injury.

And it's easy to see why his first season at ISU might have impressed recruits.

Having said all that, I have no idea why Omaha or the other kids decided to go to ISU.

Obviously I love the team but I'd never watch ISU if it wasn't my favorite team. It's like Bo Ryan or McD era UNI basketball. It's a grind, but it works.
That’s sort of the reason why I wish I watched them more. Other than Miami, I haven’t seen them lose so I feel like I’m missing out on something. It’s hard to criticize them for being a grind when the few times I watch them they impress.

It seems like ISU (and TJ) get ripped upon for "grinding" out wins. Every coach at every level takes a look at his/her talent and has to decide "what do we need to do to put us in a position to win"? What offense do we run? Do we make it a shoot out or do we make slow it down + make it a defensive struggle. Those who ridicule TJ for slowing the game down + giving his team the best chance to win (HerkyFan) don't know much about basketball. Based on his philosophy + more importantly his talent, playing a game in the 50's or 60's gave ISU the best chance to win. It worked pretty well (who played in the Sweet 16 last year) , so who are we (especially HerkyFan) to criticize? Maybe this upcoming year is different? Once Omaha + Milan get there it will be different? Who knows? TJ (and every coach out there) has forgotten more about coaching bball than any of us know us (yes that includes HerkyFan). Just relax + watch the games. Jesus, it's not that damn important to get into an internet pillow fight over something so out of our control.

Fire away HerkyFan. Copy + paste your usual mundane reply.

I tell you what Stender, if you can give us a link from last fall for showing your outrage to clown fans when they ripping on Iowa for winning 10 football games with defense and special teams I will believe you are as wholesome as you claim to be.

Otherwise you are a typical clown fan who rips on Iowa but then turns around and hails isu for doing the exact same thing. So here is your chance to prove you aren’t a typical clown fan hypocrite. I look forward to your link showing your posts on cryclown fanatic defending Iowa for winning 10 games last fall.

Link?

Who started this thread? Again if clown fans don’t want me to sling crap back at them then they shouldn’t come here and run their mouths.

But of course the little bro syndrome runs so deep that they simply can’t stay away.

There are fans on both sides that do the stuff about yeah but it wasn't pretty, ball control, pressure defense etc. But to me it is about winning. No doubt the football Hawks win, sometimes the offense isn't exciting, but the defense is stout and the offense does enough and they win consistently. If I'm a Hawk fan, I'm happy. If I am a member of the rival fan base I may criticize it a bit, but would I be happy with the Hawk's win-loss record? hell yeah! And I think most rational Clone fans would agree, of course there are a few irrational fans from both fan bases that can't seem to ever give the other team credit while still maintaining some healthy but reasonable hatred of their rival LOL. It seems the main issue for Iowa comes down to a QB that just isn't very good (I know nobody here ever realized that LOL) and maybe the ball control offense limits WR recruiting a bit, but if Petras could just be somewhat above average you could have not just a good team this year but a very good team.

I don’t have an issue with what you are saying at all. Hey I didn’t start this thread and until clown fans came here shooting off their mouths I didn’t post in it either. If clown fans want to come here and run their mouths then I will run their noses in the s*** they sling.

It is amazing how down right pissy they get when they come to an Iowa board, run their mouths and then get mocked for how anti-reality their fan base really is. It must be that the little brother syndrome is being passed down from one generation to the next, AD to AD, Coaching regime to Coaching regime and past players to current players . Maybe there is a better explanation for it but I can’t find one and it has been occurring since we started playing them again in 1977.

The Barney Fife of HR message boards. A true low life.
Says a clown fan posting on big brothers board. Hey cryclownbonner29 guess what each time you run your mouth over here you are proving my point that clown fans live with little brother syndrome. Now shouldn’t you be over on cryclown fanatic arguing with crybaby Brent Bloom as why you can’t afford to give $5.00/month to his NIL? Love how cheap clown fans are.

We want more. We want more. We want more.

I follow b-ball recruiting with a passion and I'm jealous of ISU's success and specifically with Omaha. The kid appears to be a complete stud that I wish we had.

But, having followed recruiting for years my disappointment in cases like these is mitigated by understanding recruits like Xavier Foster, or the Murry brothers and more. At that time of these guys recruitment/signing....who'd have thought that one of the Murrays would be a lottery pick and his brother seemingly headed for college stardom the next year....and XF a transfer that amounted to zip so far? I have to admit that I thought Foster was going to be a possible lottery pick as an athletic 7 footer with some skills....

I wish we landed all of the top talent and I always want better results as I think Fran can win at an even higher level with more talent....but I also believe that he is at a slow and steady pace increasing the talent on the roster year by year. I just wish it was faster! Like right now!

Does anyone know what blue chip offers (if any) OMAHA had? Once Iowa stopped pursuing I kind of lost track of him. For example, does he have the same sort of offers as Power?

Finalists were Oregon, KU, ISU, and the G-League. He had a very, very quiet recruitment though.

Well, if things go as figured, the clones should have one hell of a year (Can you all say National Championship?). Anything short of that will be a disappointment and at least three of those players will be gone the next year. (Unless they get addicted to that water!)

There can't be a much bigger transition in this sense than the one from Johnny Orr to Tim Floyd. And it had an effect on the crowd at Hilton. But winning took care of any regrets about the style of play.

Couple things. 100% Iowa fan first. The little brother/big brother thing is so dumb. Why get so worked up over this? What do you win even if you do win?

Worked up, nope. Again if clown fans didn’t come here and run their mouths off I wouldn’t throw their crap back at them. They will never stop because it is a cornerstone of the isu culture. They simply can’t help it. Now to answer your question, it isn’t a matter of winning or losing it is about mocking the isu culture for what it is.

Says a clown fan posting on an Iowa board. The isu culture is on display daily on cryclown fanatic. Only at isu does a thread about their NIL collective get locked up because of how cheap and douchy the isu fan base was portraying itself.

Maybe you can tell us how it really is cryclownbonner29.

There are tons of douchy threads on cryclown fanatic from clown fans, are you sure you want me to rub your nose in more of them? This could end up being a lot of fun.

I don't think he has the offensive skill set to be a one and done. But GD, that's a kid you want in college. He is a junkyard dog.

I don't think this makes him any lesser of a player, but putting the G League in his finalists list was a little disingenuous. Here's an actual quote of his from an interview he did earlier this week when asked about the G League: "I’ve not had conversations with them yet, but that is the level I want to get. I’d never turn those conversations away.”

That's weird! I've heard of pro aspirations but not in the sense of G-League. I guess IA State is a little better than it?

🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

I suppose those are good offers but usually if Kansas offers then the kid has dozens of other blue bloods offering as well. I wonder why the other programs stayed away?
Hard telling, Maybe they all watched him play and they weren't impressed.

Kansas typically offers about 3x as many kids as Duke and UNC do. For example in the '23 class Kansas has supposedly offered 51 players whereas Duke has only offered 11 and UNC only 8.

Kansas usually offers only top-tier guys and gets enough to stockpile them on the bench. In Iowa State’s case when we are recruiting against the Jayhawks, they generally end up in Lawrence and sometimes just sit on the bench or play little. Coleman-Lands started for Iowa State two years ago and transferred to KU to play a backup role and won a national title.

Others that we have recruited and probably would have started for the Cyclones languished on the bench, seeing only mop-up duty. Kirk Hinrich was an instate prodigy headed to Iowa State to play for Tim Floyd, until he left for his short stint with the Bulls. Hinrich went to KU. Enter Larry Eustacy and instead we ended up with Jamaal Tinsley. I’d make that trade any day.

I would add that Iowa has fallen victim to blueblood Kansas in recruiting a number of times. Raef LaFrenz and the kid from Iowa Falls (name escapes me) could easily have been Hawkeyes had they not chosen the Kansas to the NBA route.

So when TJ beats out Bill Self for a top level recruit, I feel good. Maybe Omaha felt there was a chance of Kansas/Self getting more than just a slap on the wrist for illegal activities, but I won’t hold my breath.

It really doesn’t matter who/how many you offer. What does matter are the ones that sign and play for you.

I was responding to someone who was surprised that the Kansas offer didn't lead to other blue blood offers. It's not that deep. You can say it doesn't matter, but it's still a fact that Kansas extends scholarship offers more than almost any D1 basketball program in the country the past few years. They have a very different recruiting philosophy than the other blue bloods.
