Penn State Dual

Because he has a lot of Pride. It's hard to admit what you are doing isn't the best. Good coaches can fight change as stay close to the top but eventually fall or have to change... Great coaches see the change coming and adapt.... THE best coach started the change!!!
Similar to Glock did to the firearms industry. They fought this stuff tooth and nail, now all are doing it.

You wouldn't need any of that in his contract. Cael isn't going anywhere for another 10-20 years.

The zero coaching experience is a moot point. It's getting kids to wrestle for you (and his name alone will do that) and getting them to win ships. Which, I also think he would be able to do. He'd certainly understand how to actually train guys to win.
The more likely scenario is that Cunningham leaves and becomes a HC and Taylor becomes an assistant, making HC salary. All the while his kids program and "business mind" (endorsements, national team, merch, camps, etc) are making him money...

Everyone seems so confident. We got college kids with NIL deals making $2-$3 million+ per year and you don’t think these guys can pull that in endorsements?

Not in college wrestling no. Not even close.

Those guys didn't wrestle with NIL obviously either.

Leaving Virginia Tech and leaving Iowa are two different animals.
But the reasons aren't. Brands and DT were/are more attached to their respective schools than even Gable or Sanderson were to ISU. Winning team championships brings an attachment so much stronger than the individual aspect does. This is especially true when coaching. No dream job matches up more to someone that dedicated to their program than to go back there as the HC and do what you did when you were there wrestling.

I just don't see ANY way that DT would stay at Iowa if the PSU job was offered to him, unless he was already at Iowa for a long enough period of time that moving his family would become a major issue. So, short of really establishing some solid roots in the area, which would almost certainly take quite a long time, I wouldn't see him turning that job down.

With that said, my concern was really only with him leaving early on anyway. If he puts in 6 plus seasons before leaving, I would think he would either have got the program to a point where someone else could take over without it completely disintegrating. Or, you would have enough time to really know if he was really the answer or not.

I'm thinking both DT and Dake are doing well. Look at what Bo Nickal is doing, he has a lot of irons in the fire. Dake and Taylor seem to have their acts together

Kyle Dake’s Net Worth, Salary, and Earnings

In 2023, American freestyle wrestler Kyle Dake’s estimated net worth is $24 million. A four-time World Championship winner and an Olympics bronze medalist, Dake has accumulated a massive fortune from his wrestling career.

Moreover, Dake earns a massive chunk from endorsements and brand promotions. He is endorsed by Pure and Clean Sports, Titan Mercury Wrestling Club, White Oak Pastures, and Earth Foam.

The Magic Man earns a massive chunk from endorsements and brand promotions. He has a paid partnership with Adidas. Adidas and Taylor launched a line of wrestling apparel, shoes, and clothing, named M2.

Moreover, Taylor helps his wife to run a heath-juice business K2 Roots.

Haha! I already posted this earlier along with Taylor and Burroughs. That’s where all these responses have come from.

How can you make that comment about someone being more attached to their schools than another? You really have no way of knowing that. And your paragraph 2 is what I was referring to. Once you have set roots and made your own mark, there is no need to leave. Why be 2nd fiddle to the king and be compared to him when you can have your own?

This is true, imagine you're 32 and have two kids and are married? Why move if you have it good?

I do not know if the source is accurate, but I doubt these guys are getting four figure deals lolol.
Right. Obviously these are estimates and they could be way out of bounds. But you gotta think with the number of endorsements they are making good money.

You are 100% incorrect in every aspect.

1.) I have posted the stats many times that clearly show Iowa's performance is considerably ahead of every other program but PSU.

2.) Get your head out of your own ass in regards to the UofM dual. They were clearly coming off a significant illness and the dual was decided by roughly 3 seconds of riding time and their number 1 wrestler being so sick he got majored. Mind you, other than being pinned 2x's in his career, that was the 1st time he has ever lost by 8 or more. If you came away from that dual thinking UofM was a clearly better NCAA Tournament team, you don't know wrestling very well. Still Cass beats Davison and Brands gives many more options between 165-184,

3,) As far as MSU goes, you are welcome to discuss it with me all you want. The simple truth is all the Athletic Department has cared about for ANY of their fringe teams the last 20 years is graduate as many as possible on time and stay out of trouble. Add in the Nasser debacle and that only made that more clear. Actually, what Roger and Chris are doing at MSU is about the absolute best that can be done considering what they have to work with.

4.) I am happy you have "followed wrestling close enough", but the simple truth is they ARE the 2nd best staff there is and recruiting is the MAJOR difference that separates PSU, not just from Iowa, but from EVERYONE. There isn't a coach or staff out there that changes that for as long as Cael and Casey stay together...
Mark Ironside travels with the team for radio coverage and he said the illness rumors are false. FWIW.

interesting. He hasn't exactly been bullet proof over the years with some of the things he has said, but I would definitely be surprised he would say something like that without actually knowing the truth.

If that is in fact the case, what happened with Woods really scares me. No one has made him look like that his entire career. If that happened with no injury or illness, he may have really checked out this season...Fingers crossed that isn't the case....

i know this goes against the if you are not #1 crowd, but pst is going to score more points tonight, iowa can call it a victory if there are 5 or 6 matches that go down to wire and win 2,3 or 4 of them. 125(w), 141(w), 149,157,165(w), 184. 27-9 with 6 matches in question until the final buzzer would be an outcome to build on and this board will still be up in arms about everything.

I get that it isn't the standard. Nor, have I EVER said it should be. My argument is simply against getting rid of Brands to chase a team that I simply don't believe is catchable anytime soon. I think this is especially true when I just don't see ANYONE out there that is remotely proven nor have they shown nearly the willingness to take over BY FAR the most demanding program to try to chase PSU at its incredibly high apex...
So, let’s just give up and settle for battling for second place? I don’t believe it’s that dire. Put a solid team together and anything can happen.

Not what I said at all. The goal should ALWAYS be to put the best possible team together and try to win it all. I am simply arguing against those acting like Brands is WHY they aren't in 1st ahead of PSU and, even moreso, against those thinking there is some magical fix to get rid of him and leap directly into contention with PSU.

To be clear, I still believe Brands is Iowa's best chance to compete with PSU. Maybe a coach out there proves himself and shows the interest to take over and do better. But, right now, I do NOT see ANYONE that fits that description...

I have IOWA +20 tonight. IF they do not at least cover. I am breaking SHEEEET AGAIN!!!! I also have Candy at 165 in a 2 part bet. 25 to win, and 25 NOT to get majored. IF He loses I will AGAIN be pissed, if he gets majored I will be outside in the dark breaking more SHEEET and HOWLING at the moon like a rabid BANSHEE!!!

IF you happen to live close and hear cazy sounds, BEST to stay FAR away!!!!!

GO HAWKS!!!!!

Just got home from a boring continuing ed conference in Des Moines. Buddy and former HS wrestling teammate is on his way. Wife has the kids and we're gonna party like the old days. Tall order tonight but we will be there loud for the Hawks.

Looks like we would have to pony up some big money to get any of these guys. Maybe they really do want to coach but it’s not like any of them are going to be wow’ed by a coaches salary.
Never know what motivates people…

I simply have 2 issues with DT. Essentially zero coaching experience at the DI level and, more importantly, the simple fact that he would 100% pull a Brands or Sanderson and leave Iowa immediately if the PSU job opened up.
To make such a major, risky change in removing someone as inarguably successful as Brands, I would not only be certain that Taylor is a legit DI coach, he is 100% committed to be a DI Coach and, again, most importantly, 100% committed to Iowa for a SIGNIFICANT amount of time.

To me, it would take some type of contract where Iowa could obviously terminate him if the results don't match expectations but he can't leave on his own to coach elsewhere for at least a 5 year period.....Sadly, I see no way in hell he would sign something like that....
I would not be at all worried about D1 coaching experience with him. Worrying about him leaving to take over PSU is wasted worry too. Even if it happened it means Carl is gone so not the end of the world.

he said some veery interesting things in the interview. He was the most unfiltered I have heard him in a while.

Jesus...a wrestling thread where Tom Brands is getting fired and talk of Caitlin Clark and women basketball as the most feared at the University of Iowa...we are in hell wrestling fans..just sayin....

You could have had +21 in one of the on-line sportsbooks yesterday.

I am confident Dake, Taylor, and JB are all worth > $1M, even more confident that Dake is not worth anywhere near $24M. Unless his name is actually Kyle Dake Pelosi, zero chance.

**edit: I stand corrected. Upon a deeper dive it seems he sold the intellectual property rights from his reverse aging technology for $22,500,000 **

never thought about that!!! Makes total sense about Brands and DT, and how easy it was for the two greatest wrestlers to leave thier Schools.

We may not win anymore but at least there arent any dastardly 'cars' in the driveway! Moral victories all around baby.

Cael won't be resting anyone. If Brands had the chance to step on a throat of the perceived number 1 rival, wouldn't he do it with malicious intent? Wouldn't we as fans expect it? Not a chance would anyone miss this opportunity.
“Step on the throat” was exactly what I was gonna say he will want to do.

However, after thinking about it further, sitting guys would be the ultimate diss (provided it was still an ass-beating).

Either way, he’s a scumbag.
