Penn State just got hosed

Yeah, sorry I had to make the call to protect my parley.

I value money more than watching Penn State pull off an upset......

Agree with the original poster, except the foul on the shooter was not at the top, but that the shooter had his space violated and had no place to land, as mentioned.

In OT there was a play where the ball was dribbled/deflected off an Indiana players foot and went out of bounds. Possession was given to Indiana. They got hosed on that one for sure.

My standard comment...college basketball officiating is horrible.
Officiating is a tough gig, so I try to be empathetic towards them. They are flawed human beings after all, like everybody else. And like every other gig, some are better than others.

Besides, if they called everything we see from a TV set, there probably wouldn't be enough players left to finish the game! ;)

Yeah, not a job I would want. I officiate HS wrestling. College basketball looks SSSSOOOOOOOO difficult to do. So many elements moving at 100 miles an hour.

I don't doubt that officiating is difficult, but when all the calls down the stretch of a tight game go one way, it is highly suspicious.

I'm willing to give lower levels, HS, Jr High, even D3, much more of a break. D1, not so much (same with NBA).

To be fair, I probably have different expectations than most. I really don't care how much they call inside, short of assaults. I want them to call everything on the perimeter, travels, illegal screens,, grabs, holds, pushes, touch fouls, everything. If they call it every time and consistently, eventually players and coaches will get it through their heads that it will get called and they'll stop doing all of that. Open up that outside and we have a much better game.

Yeah, I reckon so. But then I think the same thing watching College and Pro Football, when every play has somebody somewhere with a fistful of jersey covering a Receiver (or blocking assignments too). At some point you just have to believe they're taught that way and figure it won't be seen and/or called. It happens too often to convince me otherwise.

Call the obvious, consistency on the block charge call, call travel on the step back, and don’t anticipate fouls. Figure those out and it’s an easy gig.

Or players would adjust and play correctly

i am sure the iowa high school basketball association could use some more refs . lol
Nah, too old to run up and down the court. Iowa high school could use some younger guys though. It’s past time for those like you to get out of it. The best officials are those that don’t think they’re “know it alls”. Guess that eliminates you, Pappa.

In all sports, there is a major shortage of officials. The reason is - the fan base has an abundant supply of turds.

The last sentence was sarcasm but it struck a nerve with you. The rest of my post was spot on though.
Struck a nerve? Uuummm Ok. I get pissed at Officials too, like most fans do at one time or another. I just TRY to keep it all in context and don't hold them to a higher standard than I do other humans.

Some are better than others just like every other job on the planet. But one thing I do know, is that you can't play games without them, and if anything their is a shortage of people wanting the gig at multiple levels across the sporting landscape.

And maybe someday soon I'll agree with others that say so and so made a terrible call ( in my judgement ) and comment about it. But I'll TRY to remember it's a damn difficult job while doing so, then I'll move on with my life.

So I prefer to say to Officials everywhere, Thank You for your efforts, whether you're fairly well compensated for them or volunteering on a local level. We can't do it without you.

wow , a classic tard moment by you . you are the one complaining and then telling us how easy it would be if they do this or that and i am the know it all ? lol

I seriously doubt that you have any qualifications to make such a claim. You are just a "know it all" mouthy fan totally clueless to anything of substance. Prove me wrong.

The sooner people realize that the big ten uses officiating to intentionally build in a huge home court advantage the more sane you will feel watching the games.
sooo... you think the Big 10 tells officials that they need to make sure the home team gets a " yuge " home court advantage whether it be calling more fouls or turnovers on the visiting team ? dont you think the BIG would be at all concerned that an official might come forward some day and tell the media that ?

I don’t think games are rigged, per se. I just think that the conference manages officials in a way that results in a massive home court advantage. This helps programs with fan engagement and encourages parity. It also screws the conference at tournament time because they can’t get away with the physical play that’s allowed in conference games and it also costs the best teams seed lines.

The fouls calls (one against Penn State and one not called against Indiana) could be explained as "judgement" calls -- not reviewable. But the ball that bounced off the Indiana players shoe and went out of bounds should have been a call that would have been reversed if coaches could challenge in the final minutes of play. 3 questionable calls and all go IU's way.

Officials can suck. And it is obvious when it happens. Iowa has gotten screwed but also has benefited. If you are an official on this board can you explain a call I have seen all year in hs ball. Explain verticality to me please. The players and coaches would like to know the difference from game to game.

in all 3 of iowas big10 games it is very hard to come up with massive home court advantage for the home team , stats are fairly even , including fouls , free throw shooting and turnovers . pretty sure iowa shot more FTs than minny .

a player is entitled to their space from the floor to the moon , straight up and down . by straight i mean straight . no offense dude but if you dont know what verticality is how do you know whether or not they suck ?

great great post . i see more than a few calls i dont like . 2 that come to mind are the blocking foul on joe t in the minny game and the step back 3 by their point guard . the blocking foul i thought should have been an easy call , the contact occurred in joes chest area which should have told the ref it was a charge , that is one of the criteria to consider when calling a block / charge . the step back 3 was a full 2 step back 3 clearly a travel . the reasons we lost were free throws and not identifying the hot 3 pt shooter .

That is how I understand the rule also. Some officials call a push when we have guys absolutely straight up and they get jumped into. When asked how it is a push when they did not touch them with their hands we get ignored. Same thing happens when I ask about allowing an armbar to the back all the way to the basket on a driver..... I know the rules, but some officials do not and it is obvious to me when they cannot even attempt to explain a call to me. Even if I ask nicely.

Can you provide documentation or is this just the insane rumblings of a madman?

you don’t think reffing favors the home team? Or do you just think the conference is oblivious to it?
If it favors the home team, it is unintended outcome. Fans may influence calls more than anything else. It is not by plan from the Big Ten.
Now provide documentation to support your crazy claim.
