So what are everyone’s thoughts on this Angel Reese-Caitlyn Clark dustup?

I hadn't seen this video until just now. I didn't know she was following her like that. Pretty pathetic by Reese. She embarrassed herself with this. Just dumb behavior. Clark wasn't doing anything like that. If Reese had just made the gesture once towards the Iowa sideline or whatever, we wouldn't have a controversy.

And as a "controversy", it ain't much. Just dumb behavior from an athlete. But you know, everybody is talking so it must be a big deal... so there are my two cents.

That's because all you see on tv is the hand wave at the FT line, and then the ring point. They tend to skip the 10 seconds of the little puppy dog trying to get her owners attention because it doesn't fit the narrative that they were the same thing.

Clark has handled it with class like you would expect. Reese is a racist, proven even more so by her latest comments on Biden and "visiting the Obamas instead".

Question: why do people on the left have no balls. when it comes to calling out black racists?

there have been quite a few of us who most would describe as leftists calling it out over the past few days. it has genuinely caused me personally to reflect on some prior alleged racial incidents and realize that it does more harm than good to accept people’s claims on face value.

now i’m not saying i’m red pilled or anything but i will admit i was dismissive of some conservative viewpoints over the past few years regarding what is actually racism.

Caitlin has moved on, we should too.

I love Caitlin, but she talks a lot of crap on the court and someone was going to do it back eventually.

I thought Reese following her around the court at the end was a *bit* excessive, but didn't really think twice about it until Social Media blew up.

Trash talk & taunting make sports more fun, even though it sucks when your favorite team/player is on the wrong end of it. TLDR this "controversy" has gotten 1000x more attention than it warranted.

It's a bit excessive because it would be a legitimate technical foul in any other facet of basketball...................but she needs to be protected from the consequences of her actions for certain societal reasons?

Nah.

my take

1. Clark certainly has demonstrated some not so great sportsmanship in her time at Iowa, I personally wish she'd just let her game do all the talking
2. Reese went way over the top with her actions and is now trying to defend them by comparing it to Clark
3. I would pay for the MMA fight

Yeah I'm sure the whole outrage online is because they didn't call a tech with 2 seconds left in a game that was already decided.

Don't really care about it, but the media reaction and the LSU participation in the media reaction is kind of a joke. They would be pretty hard champions for a lot of people to like regardless of who they beat. People didn't like South Carolina because they were winning, period. LSU was selected as one of the top 12 teams in women's basketball and it's been nothing but chip-on-the-shoulder whining from them before, during, and now even after the Final Four about how they're not getting respect. On what planet were they being disrespected? Oh, I know, the one where your coach gaslights you into thinking the world is against you. Works well as motivation, but when you broadcast that as your personality it's only going to endear yourself with people like Iowans who are guilty of similar shit. Only this time, it's not going to endear yourself to them.

Crazy how threatened the black community is by a good white basketball player
Eh, I dunno if that's really the driving force behind all this. Yeah, you're going to have some level of stick-togetherness and bias there with some people, but I don't think they think it's a huge deal that the game's biggest star right now is a white girl. I think most of society is past all that by now. (best golfer black, best rapper white, etc)

I think when Reese brought up the race angle and made it political you saw a bunch of people side with her as they typically would across racial/political lines. But it wasn't hate on Clark.

Tell you what, you call out a white racist, and I'll call out a black racist, quid pro quo style.

....and, GO!
This. As someone said here or another thread why do we even have to have a color added. Just call a racist a racist.

Shameless self-promotion, but I was pleased with this one:

Great write up as always. Only thing I somewhat see different is "I am dismayed that so many media types are flogging that alleged racial component of the incident to drive clicks".

I feel Angel's words and actions before, at end of game, after game, and now days after game show that she too is more than happy to push the racial component and pour gasoline to the fire for the same exact reason-clicks. She wanted it, caused it and is embracing it - she craves the attention to the point of gushing about hitting a million Instagram followers and peddling "Queen" gear.

Really, with LSU, it's just Mulkey and Reese. And is this anything new? We all know fandom... we've only spent enormous hours on sports radio/tv, message boards, etc... hating on certain players and coaches because of their behavior or attitudes or whatever. Always something to bitch about or analyze. LSU gave us some good fodder.

Nobody cared about SC, they were just another super team.

I think we're over-complicating this. Same shit we do with men's sports.

And of course Iowa is going to hate them. Your fans are going to hate the shit out of the opposition when they lose a high stakes game and have opposing players or coaches that act like dicks/bitches or whatever you want to call them.

You must not have been following the NBA MVP race the last two seasons. There were a lot of people upset that Jokic won MVP and some ESPN talking heads were accusing him of stat padding (Kendrick Perkins, maybe?).

I wouldn't go as far as to say it's the black community that's threatened, but it's very obvious that there is a rather large segment of people that have a stick up their ass with players like Jokic and CC. I'll let you decide why that is.

Also, Angel is clearly a racist, hateful person, but it's time to move on and let her go back to being a nobody.

Yup, this event was a goldmine for the culture war capitalization machine.

Hilarious to hear certain media complain about the event distracting from what should be the focus on the women's game itself while at the same time pumping up the controversy by playing up all our favorite culture war topics. Dumb.

I agree she is pushing it --- but the media failed in its responsibility to not give nonsense wider distribution.

Let her rant and rave on her IG and Twitter feeds, but don't disseminate her idiocy broadly.

She plays with some attitude during games but when has she “talked crap” on the outside?

Here is what she just said about Angel Reese: “I have nothing but respect for her“. ”I’m a big fan of hers”. “ I don‘t think she should be criticized at all.”

I was referring to her talk on the court, but I can see how it could be misunderstood - editted my original post.

2 of the great on the court trash talkers were Jordan and Bird. Gave them an edge.

When the game was over they celebrated with this team and respected the opponent.

Not the biggest deal imo but running over to get in the face of a losing team’s player after the game is over is bad look and draws attention away from the win.

Angel was an asshole at Maryland too. Seems to have it in for Clark and was biding her time and took trash-talk waaaaaay over the top. Disappointed in ESPN coverage from their pundits who see it as the same thing when it's not. God forbid if it was Caitlin stalking Angel like that.

CNN —
LSU star Angel Reese says that neither she, nor her team, would be visiting the White House after the Tigers defeated the Iowa Hawkeyes 102-85 to win their first basketball national championship.

Traditionally, the national champions would be invited to the White House. But after comments from first lady Jill Biden suggesting that Iowa be invited as well before appearing to walk that back, Reese told “I AM ATHLETE” podcast hosts Brandon Marshall and Ashley Nicole Moss: “I don’t accept the apology because you said what you said … You can’t go back on certain things that you say … They can have that spotlight. We’ll go to the Obamas.’ We’ll go see Michelle. We’ll see Barack.”

Reese, who was named the women’s NCAA tournament’s Most Outstanding Player as a result of her standout performances, also said separately: “I just know if the roles were reversed, they wouldn’t be the same. If we were to lose, we would not be getting invited to the White House.”

JFC she is getting more insufferable by the day. What a petty miserable B

She very clearly has a huge chip on her shoulder that she continues to carry in spite of graciousness shown by Caitlin, the Hawkeyes BB team and the Biden administration. It's exhausting and most people will eventually grow tired of it.

I can't imagine that the Obamas will host the team in light of what's transpired.
