SWARM CEO Brad Heinrichs Explains why they Currently are Unable to Support the Men's Basketball Program like they Need To

Nfl and nba are infinitely more watchable products.

The only thing college basketball has going for it is our irrational emotional attachment to our teams and then March madness.
NBA even more so than NFL. I watched a few NCAA games last year that had 7+ min scoring droughts, and some other games where 4-6 pts are scored in a 10 min strech. That's hard to sit and watch.

You couldn't get me to watch an NBA game. Absolutely hate it. Regular season or playoffs, I don't care. Hate it!!!!!!
My viewership of NBA went WAY down after the Bird/Magic era. And I was a HUGE Celtics fan growing up as a kid through my college years, Still want to see them win today but in all honesty, I have not watched one full game this season including the playoffs.....I catch bits and pieces.

I think you might be on to something there. Just going by memory, college hoops used to be a far better product 30+ years ago. This has been discussed before, but I think the quality of college hoops has gone way downhill since players started leaving early to go pro, if not bypassing college altogether. Today, the quality of the product is mediocre IMO, compounded by the fact that every close game comes to a screeching halt inside the last minute or two. It turns into a parade of fouls, free throws, and timeouts. Unwatchable.

I basically only watch Iowa games, and March Madness, these days. Pretty much as you alluded to. I'd much rather watch football (college OR pro). I've also developed a taste for the NHL.

That's fine. It's a far superior product to NCAA, but might not be for everyone.
No question far superior athletes, but just not my cup of tea. In fact I've lost some interest in the college game as the rules have become more like the NBA.
I'm just an old man who liked the game better before the shot clock and 3 pt line. :)

For sure, the talent level is just not the same as before in college basketball. I watch Iowa and some other big ten teams in jan/feb.

College football will go back up in interest for me once they figure out how to do a real post season.

Got any money for beer?

Iowa's SWARM Collective is partnering with Exile Brewing Company to produce the SWARM Golden Ale, available in tap room and on store shelves by late July, per release.

EDIT: 20% of SALES will go to the SWARM collective.

Still less than a year since SWARM launched.

Swarm Golden Ale will be available for fans to purchase in retail stores, restaurants, entertainment venues, and the taproom at Exile Brewery in Des Moines.

Exile Brewing Company is a locally owned, family business. Every drop of their beer is brewed, bottled, kegged, and canned at their historic brewery in downtown Des Moines.

I have now read this thread and the football board one in their entirety. Here are my thoughts:

1) Brad is a good guy putting an awful lot of time, energy, and his own money into the Swarm.

2) most fans who donate to the athletic department care greatly about their priority points and Barta is a jackass with no idea how to figure that out.

3) we can’t blame coaches for recruiting failures because most of the time little old Iowa will be outbid. Note, I personally will still hate FM for his terrible coaching and lack of defensive effort and priority.

4) it’s the Wild West of free agency in NCAA sports. Most of us don’t care that much to give some 18 year old more money than the average fan makes. We shall see how long this goes for before the NCAA realizes what’s happened.

Any idea whether it will be distributed outside of Iowa?
I'm all about this next time in DSM or it gets distributed to Twin Cities. What a great idea. I bet it's pretty tasty too. I love micro-brewed beer.

Iowa at least for MBB needs to figure out. What ISU is doing financially that Iowa can emulate. Somehow they are getting multiple consensuses 4 stars that are not just from Iowa or life long Hawks fans.

@Tx_Hawk ,

Hy-Vee is good at attempting to get products in their stores when customers ask for it. A poster from Illinois mentioned that he asked his local Illinois Hy-Vee store manager if / when they could buy this beer at that particular store and the manager didn't know.

Hy-Vee is in 8 states. Any idea if this beer will make it beyond the Iowa Hy-Vee stores?

Iowa State basketball has a billionaire sugar daddy at their disposal.

This was from his luxury suite at the Kentucky Derby.

Iowa needs to get a couple of those. Doesn't Iowa have an entertainment industry connection. Get some of those folks and connect it with the writer's workshop. Get some celebrity power involved.

NBA is a POS and not worth wasting any time watching that shit show product they put out there.....NFL maybe..but 100% college BBall and FBall are much better to watch and it isn't even close!

This is about the point I'm getting to as well.

If what I'm reading here is true, it sounds like possibly Iowa football has half a chance to be competitive with NIL, but the basketball program, not so much, barring a big change.

If Iowa hoops falls behind and can't recruit, then I'm out. I'm an Iowa hoops fan at heart, but I have no interest in following a program that isn't winning. I've not been particularly thrilled with the results the past couple decades even as it is. If they fall further behind? I will surely lose any and all interest. Football, I'd gladly still follow if they can be competitive. Guess we'll see how it all goes, though, for the various programs.

I can hear it now: Why don't I just contribute? It's not that I don't care, but I don't care THAT much. Is there any guarantee that donating will have the desired effect on recruiting? Not really. I'm a long time fan, but spending my disposable income on Iowa sports so that MAAAAYBE they can get a few recruits is something that ranks pretty far down the list of things I want to spend my money on. I have many other interests besides Iowa sports.

I'm not saying you guys shouldn't contribute, but it's not something I plan to do. Say what you will about my fandom.

I think it's probably gonna be hard to get anyone but the most hardcore fans to buy into the whole Swarm/NIL thing, TBH.
You sound more like a bandwagon fan, especially saying if they start losing I’m out.

The fact you won’t join Swarm even says more about your level of team support.

I liked the game before you could run for 3 or 4 steps with the ball and not have traveling called. Rules for NBA barely exist for the league and rarely exist for the superstars. It's a joke of a game right now.

Note that SWARM reportedly spent a ton of money to send our top offensive players to a camp in California. The 8 offensive players that reportedly went: McNamara, Ragaini, Anderson, Vines, Brown, Lachey, All and Ostrenga. The 4 players in bold were brought in because of SWARM money, of course.

Now, the question becomes, when can SWARM bring in some high end basketball players?

Yep, I hate watching the best athletes in the world actually play the game and actually have true freedom of movement so the superstars don’t get mugged the entire game. Nothing like watching a Minnesota Wisconsin game ending at 54-52.

A donation? The only reason people are buying that beer is because it's connected to the Swarm. Take the Swarm attachment away, you have nothing to donate. I imagine they make a bit of money from it.

That will depend on if Exile and their chosen distributors have the ability/desire to distribute out of state. No idea if they currently distribute out of state. At least in central and Western Iowa, the AB distributor handles Exile.

I have no idea the process to gain rights to distribute out of state, but it can’t be too challenging, as I know Millstream has distribution in the Twin Cities

I remember Hawkeye Gold pop, back in the eighties. It was good stuff. If the beer taste good that's one way I will support.
There's a memory. Wow. I had forgotten about Hawkeye Gold.

I think it was out around the same time you could get a 45 of "Bringin' Home the Roses" from Pizza Hut.

For those wanting the players to get part of the millions being made by the university on sport - what millions? Isn't the Athletic dept self sufficient? The only ones getting millions are the coaches. Which, I agree, are getting paid way too much these days. But schools are competitive with money to buy success.

Bandwagon fan, my ass. I've been a pretty hardcore fan since the mid 80's when I was 10 years old, and even stuck in through the Lickliter years with the hope that better times would return... But okay. If it comes to where Iowa is a perennial doormat because of not being able to compete with NIL.. Yeah, I can't imagine getting much enjoyment out of that. If you continue to watch all the games if things get to that point, then sure, I guess you can wear your true fan badge.

As I said, when it comes to asking me to start being a regular donor... I have higher priorities in my life when it comes to where my spare cash goes.

You are definitely a bandwagon fan no doubt.

Cigs and booze shouldn't be a higher priority in your life you gotta fix that man.

Good story where college coaches discuss the transfer portal, recruiting, and NIL.

Some excerpts:

Coach in the SEC: “Honestly, when I speak to a kid for the first time, and I don’t bring NIL up, and they don’t bring it up, it doesn’t mean they’re not about NIL, it simply means they’re not going to answer my call the next time. Twenty or more other schools are willing and ready to initiate the NIL conversation immediately.”

”I think the obvious change with recruiting in the transfer portal is you must have NIL, even for the marginal players.
