While there are numerous problems plaguing Iowa football, one of the most comical internal issues is the rise of the legend of "offensive guru" Jon Budmayr. If you look up "failing upward" in the dictionary, there's actually a picture of the guy smiling from ear to ear.
Let's look at what he has accomplished in his football career, then go back and quote people on this board/Kirk himself who hailed his hiring as exactly what Iowa needed to get the offense going.
2018 - 2020. Got his first paid assistant position as Wisconsin's QBs coach. Wisconsin goes on to have its worst offensive year of the decade. QB Hornibrook averaged just 140 yards passing per game (worst in the Big 10) and the team went a terrible 5-4 in Big 10 play. The following year, he coached a guy named Jack Coan who averaged just 190 yards passing per game. He promptly left and transferred to Notre Dame. The following year was notorious bust Graham Mertz, who averaged 175 yards passing per game. Mertz too didn’t like the coaching and transferred out of the program.
2021. Despite his struggles, Budmayr was somehow hired as offensive coordinator of Colorado State. Under Budmatr, the team went 3-9 and ranked 98th in scoring offense. They were one of the worst teams in football. He was promptly fired.
2022 - 2023. After failure at two stints, coach Ferentz, known for his brilliant hiring judgment, brings Budmayr in to revive Iowa's ailing offense. The Hawks had gone 10-4 the prior year, but the offense ranked 99th in scoring. With coach B's innovative ideas and new plays, the Hawkeye offense regressed all the way down to 123rd. They became an offensive laughingstock. Rather than firing the “QBs analyst,” Kirk doubled down and gave him a substantial raise (amounting to $28,000 per month) and a new job title (senior assistant head coach). Now, with a much upgraded qb, Bud picked up right where he left off, and the offense ranks 107th. Is another raise in the horizon?
Brian Ferentz has taken a lot of heat...rightfully so. As has Iowa's incompetent OL coach who Kirk continues to praise. But why is this worthless "QB guru," who has never had any coaching success at any level, avoiding all scrutiny. He's supposed to be the QB whisperer, he’s paid tremendously well, yet he's overseen two of the worst QB seasons in Iowa football history. $28,000 per month of state money (more than most surgeons) for doing absolutely nothing. Did he marry one of Kirk's kids or something?
