Now with Nunge and Fredrick red shirting, Fran only has 10 scholarship players to use/worry about. Hopefully this helps.

Here is a summary of the current roster, the future and how Fran has recruited since he has been at Iowa:

In Men's basketball, you can have 13 on scholarship.

Cartwright joined already signed Iowa recruits Devyn Marble, Zach McCabe and Melsahn Basabe on the 2010-2011 roster.

Yes, by conference play we should only be using an 8 man rotation. Fran disagrees though.
IMO the issue is that there are maybe 3 or 4 players with 'elite' (would start on most Big10 teams) talent, and 6 or so that aren't quite there. Moss looks great one game and disappears the next. The "8 man rotation" should vary depending on who is playing well on a particular night.

Illness and injury, foul trouble are issues that will dictate how many play.....and even if 10 play if some play for only a couple of minutes that's not a bad thing. That couple of minutes might be the time that a specific player has one of those really good days that just comes out of the blue.

I think this is a real positive....a big deal.

As long as Cook, JBo, and Weiskamp get full plates of minutes, I defer to Fran on which of the others split the rest

I think he'll play all 10 in a game. But barring a miracle turnaround I expect that Pemsl's minutes will plummet once the schedule difficulty cranks up except for injury or foul trouble. Especially the way that Kriener is improving. I could also see Moss's minutes decrease if he doesn't start playing with some passion.

So, I think it will be something like this once Big Ten season starts, rounded to the nearest 5.
JBo, Cook, Joe all around 30 minutes or higher
Garza, Kriener, Baer around 20 minutes
CMac, Moss, Dailey around 15 minutes
Pemsl around 5 minutes

That's really a 9 man rotation, with an additional guy that plays a few minutes in each half.

That breaks down at 75 minutes for Cook, Garza, Kreiner, and Pemsl in the front court. So it'd need Baer to play PF for a bit in a small ball lineup.

JBo and CMac covering the PG completely, plus some time left over to cover SG

Moss and Dailey covering 30 minutes of SG, with the rest covered by some combo of JBo, CMac, and Joe

And then SF is completely covered by Joe and Baer.

If we are going to do two groups of 5. Pick two captains and let them pick the rest of their team. Just like recess.
Maybe they will play better with each other.

With only 10 scholarship players, Fran needs to find
the right combinations coming off the bench. Baer
and Dailey will need to be the energizers who can
bring momentum into the game with their defense.
