WBB 16/17 Season

Hampton, the Sunday opponent , has a very good guard, Malia Tate-Defreitas. She was conference player of the year her Soph and JR years.

OK, was that a false alarm in the arena? The BTN+ broadcast using the PA announcer as the comment track just makes it so weird. "Check one two three" for 200 times!

Oh, great, another false alarm?

An alarm went off at Carver and they made us all go up to the concourse at the WBB just before half. "Ventilation ussue"

How did Oral Roberts score 29 points in the 3rd quarter? Also, is there any reason why Sevillian did not play? Hurt?

Northwestern beat Hampton yesterday 67-48. Interestingly, Oral Roberts will play tomorrow at Northwestern while Iowa hosts Hampton. Also, Drake traveled to North Dakota and won 99-91. North Dakota will host Iowa next Wednesday (11/16).

In other B1G play, Indiana, Michigan, MSU, OSU as well as Northwestern and Iowa all won while Illinois, PSU, Purdue, Rutgers and Wisconsin all lost. Iowa's non-conference ranked opponent #9 UCLA (11/24 Cancun Challenge) struggled somewhat in the first half against Pacific but used a big third quarter to win handily while #1 ranked Notre Dame (11/30 B1G/ACC Challenge) demolished Central Michigan. Finally, South Dakota St (possible Hawkeye Challenge final) opened their season at home with a 63-56 victory over Creighton.

From the Oral Roberts game.....
Alexis Sevillian was on the bench in street clothes. She had played the exhibition game in a face mask after being hit in the face. I wonder if she was going through concussion protocol, or just held out because she wasn't comfortable. I haven't heard anything about a RS.
Oral Roberts got the 29 points in the 3rd due to a couple factors. A let up in Iowa's defensive intensity, the officials calling a bunch of touch fouls on the Hawks to have mercy on ORU, and ORU shooting better.
The alarms were extremely annoying. I never left my seat because they wouldn't let anyone use the elevator and the aisle were jammed on the stairs. They waved the players and the band back, so i could tell it was a false alarm. Then the alarm went off two more times and everyone ignored it. A kitchen fire isn't an arena emptying event.
Ally Disterhoft set a new career high in points with 29. Megan had 25. for the two games they are both shooting incredibly well. Tania is also playing very well. The FR stoll need to settle down on the offensive end. They are getting to the rim , then missing the lay-in.
Mak Meyer started, with Kathleen Doyle switching to the 2nd five. Kathleen is still finding what will work in college basketball. Bre and Amanda both had chances to score but missed the easy basket. You can't fault the effort of any of the FR. They play hard.
The rebounding was good again. For the second time they won the rebounding battle by around 20. Turnovers were cut in half. 23 the first game, only 13 this game.
Kathleen and Tania both had some nice passes last night.
Lisa used the [;platoon system again last night. first five were Megan, Ally, Tania, Mak and Bre. Second five were Chase, Kathleen, Alexa, Hannah, and Christina (with Hannah replacing Amanda). Hannah has been doing well, especially on the defensive end. Lisa said expect the platoon again on Sunday.
I saw progress from the exhibition. The defense was still good (for the most part) and the offense was sharper. Looking forward to Hampton.

Kinda wondering about Chase. Will she stay on the second team. What's the reasoning? Too early to worry about transfers, but you never know these days.

While the second wave are technically the 'second team', I hope Bluder can continue to sell it as a platoon system. I think you've got Ally, Megan and Tania, and then 5-7 girls really close in talent - each with their own assets. The other two starting the game may just 'fit' better with the other three. I think Chase is fine. It doesn't seem like she's the type who's going to compare minutes.

I am NOT the finest basketball mind, but I can look at numbers. Here are the minutes played for the first game of the season for the last four years. Each year, 8-10 players see double-digit minutes playing time.

Oral Roberts 11/11/16
27-Ally Disterhoft
27-Tania Davis
27-Bre Cera
26-Megan Gustafson
19-Makenzie Meyer
19-Kathleen Doyle

North Dakota 11/13/15
30-Disterhoft, Ally
29-Peschel, Kali

13-Kastanek, Alexa
8-Mohns, Carly
5-Till, Claire
3-Stewart, Hannah
3-Larson, Tagyn
3-Smith, Nicole
1-Schneden, Hailey

USC Upstate 11/14/14
28-Jennings, Whitney
24-Logic, Samantha

Lisa was saying in the pregame interview that with the talent and depth she has this year the platoon system gives her a way to get them all playing time. She also said that once the season started their practice time is used for preparing for their next opponent. And if they don't get playing time in these early games, the younger players could start to go backwards.
I think when they get to the tougher opponents and the Big Ten she will reign things in. But that might depend on how these young players are doing by then.

I assume that when the competition gets tougher, eight players will see most of the playing time. The team will need to fill a couple of roles:lock down defender and 3-point specialist. Here's my prediction.

Starters:
Ally Disterhoft
Alexa Kastanek
Tania Davis
Chase Coley
Megan Gustafson

Backups:
Makenzie Meyer, Kathleen Doyle, or Bre Cera
Christina Buttenham
Hannah Stewart or Amanda Ollinger

Need defense...too much emphasis on offense, ALWAYS. Only so many girls can score, but you better slow down the other teams best scorer. Alexa can't do that and some others are soft defensively.
That so called first unit has a good mix of scorers and defenders. If it's all offense you fall into the trap of what happens when shots aren't falling? There better be some defense to negate that.

Doyle started to play like the new Sam. A lot of great passes. The first three resulted in missed layups. If she isn't starting by conference season, I'll be shocked.

Hawkeyes Continue to Showcase Their Depth

Senior Ally Disterhoft led the way for the Hawkeyes with 16 points, six rebounds, and three assist. For sophomore Megan Gustafson, it was another double-double with 14 points and 11 rebounds. Sophomore Tania Davis was 5-of-6 from the field, scoring 15 points with five assists, and sophomore Hannah Stewart was 5-of-6 with 10 points. It is a career-high in points for Stewart who scored [a total of] five points in 12 games last season.

"Hannah has really enjoyed moving to the five position," Bluder said. "She has embraced that and she's taking good shots. She's playing physical and having fun."

Megan took a physical pounding from the Hampton post. It wasn't until the end before they finally called a foul. But Megan is strong, she battled her way to her double-double.
Tania had one of her best games. She was completely in control.Running the offense and taking good shots.. Kathleen Doyle continued with her great passes, Bre with her defense and intensity (although she got in some foul trouble), and Ally was Ally. Mak Meyer continues to impress.
;For the next group, Chase played well, a bunch of rebounds. Christina brought her energy, :Hannah had another great game with defensive quickness and 10 points. Amanda Ollinger and Alexa Kastanek rotated in. Lex finally hit a couple threes. Hailey got in some minutes. Alexis Sevillian and Carly DNP. Overall, I thought the team looked like they got more comfortable. When :Hampton did a run, they stuck with the rotation and played through.
Next up, the first road trip on Wednesday against North Dakota. It is always a physical game against NDU.

I think Hannah deserves special mention because she had a significant break-out game. Also, Lisa's comments about Hannah playing in the 5 position behind Megan confirms a change from last year when she was working to play at the 4 position. That is something that I was wondering about.

I'm assuming Ally is playing the four now with Chase as her back-up. I also wonder if that could change when Carly returns. I guess we shall see.

North Dakota lost again today at Texas Tech by the score 90-80. Oral Roberts lost to Northwestern by a nine point margin, 64-55.

I change my possible B1G 10 lineups daily. Let me try this two deep:

Tania Davis/Alexa Kastanek
Kathleen Doyle/Makenzie Meyer or Bre Cera
Ally Disterhoft/Christina Buttenham
Chase Coley/Amanda Ollinger
Megan Gustafson/Hannah Stewart

That makes eleven players, but by the time conference play starts, I still think that eight players will see the bulk of meaningful minutes, which leads to something more like...

Guards: Tania Davis/Kathleen Doyle/Bre Cera
Wings: Ally Disterhoft/Christina Buttenham
Bigs: Megan Gustafson/Chase Coley/Hannah Stewart

... or I am totally wrong.

I'd say you're getting closer on your last lineup. I'd put Makenzie Meyer in the back court with the way she's playing & move Bre to a wing competing with Christina. Still think Carly finds a few minutes when she works back from injury. Alexa Kastanek has to make better decisions with the ball but if they need offense she'd be an option.

They have some tough ones coming up...Possible South Dakota St. match up this Sunday, U.C.L.A in Mexico next week, Notre Dame the week after...that's gonna be tough to get two wins.

After that, there aren't many definite non-conference wins in the schedule, especially with the youth on this team. if nothing else, they should be ready to go for conference play.

I'd say maybe 3 losses?

Drake is the preseason #1 in the Valley. They beat North Dakota by 8. UNI is #2, they play Iowa State tonight. We should have a better read on the instate games after Wednesday.
James Madison will be another tough one, but it just got easier. Their conference FR of the year from last year just tore up a knee and is out for the season.

UNI is good, but had serious graduation losses. Probably the weakest of the 4 in-state D-I teams, plus we tend to do well against the Panthers pretty much regardless of circumstances. I thought last years game in Cedar Falls would be close and it turned out not to be.

ISU appears to have fixed last seasons problems, and now has a true power forward. The home team has dominated the series for some time, though right now looks like a close game.

Here's to hope Hanna Stewart gets a double-double!

Also, will Tagyn Larson travel with the South Dakota State team back to Iowa City this weekend? She's of course sitting out this year due to transfer rules. Do red shirts travel with the team on away games? Will make for an interesting encounter if she is.

57-47 at end of 3rd.

Boyle a little out of control with back to back turnovers.

Stewart playing great.

Lisa needs to get away from the 4 guard alignment and have 2 of 3 bigs on the court at a time (Megan, Chase, and Hannah).

75-60 and Ally with 20 points. Doyle will be hard to keep off the floor.

Top 8 need to be (in no order):

Megan, Chase, Ally, Davis, Doyle, Christina, Hannah, and Cera.

Kastenak/Mohns being 9/10.

Really think starters come conference time will be:

Mega, Chase, Ally, Davis, and Cera/Doyle. Need some size and defense in there.

I thought Meyer has played as well as Cera and/or Christina. You disagree?
