WBB 16/17 Season

Alexa had her bad turnovers and Coley had her bad defense, but they held it together in a game with a ton of pressure. Bluder does shorten the bench as the season goes on. Which makes it surprising to me she considered pulling Sullivan's redshirt.

Christina not playing at all is very surprising to me. She had been getting more minutes than Alexa.
ALEXIS SEVILLIAN

Also, I agree with you about Christina. It is the first game she has missed since her freshman season.

I think it was Cera's best game of the season. The scouting report was to obviously back off her to fill the lane & she made them pay with a few long balls. Hopefully she keeps shooting it with confidence & can finish at the basket a little better too. Good defense as usual.

Cera may never be a Jankoska or a Kelsey Mitchell. But she is a Lady Hawk, and a Dam Fine one at that.
Hilltop - I don't think anyone on this thread will confuse a women's basketball player with a player on the men's team, so please stop referring to the UI WBB players as a "Lady Hawk" or the team as "Lady Hawks" or "Lady Hawkeyes." We don't refer to the male basketball players as a "Gentleman Hawk" or "Gentlemen Hawkeyes." There isn't a single athletic team at the U of I named "Lady Hawkeyes" or "Lady Hawks." Please don't take offense as I know you don't really mean any harm and I believe you feel it is respectful, but it's not. Thanks for considering my comments. And I agree that Bre Cera is a damn fine player, one of several damn fine freshmen on the team!

This. Hawkeye Women. I'm liking Bre a little more each game.

To be fair, there a few schools that put "Lady" in front of their womens' teams. An example is the Louisiana Tech Lady Techsters. Not sure about this one, but I think Missouri State (the former Southwest Missouri) used to be the "Lady Bears".

Yes, there are a few. Most, if not all, appear to be southern schools. Tennessee changed all of their teams to the "Volunteers" or "Vols" except for the women's basketball team in 2015. The UT WBB retained the Lady Vols name as a tribute to coach emeritus Pat Summitt. It's not common

USC still refers to the players on its women's team "women of Troy", though the official nickname of the team is Trojans. This is given the fact that "Trojans" mean all people from Troy, regardless of gender.

OSU women's basketball: Foot injury sidelines Mavunga

Ohio State junior forward Stephanie Mavunga will be out for the "foreseeable future" with a foot injury, women's basketball coach Kevin McGuff said Friday. The 6-foot-3 forward [...] injured her right foot during practice Thursday [...] Mavunga leads the No. 13 Buckeyes (21-5, 11-1 Big Ten) with 11.3 rebounds per game and is the team's second-leading scorer with 11.8 points per game. Led by Mavunga, Ohio State has improved considerably on the glass from last season. As of Friday afternoon, the Buckeyes ranked fifth nationally with 45.81 rebounds per game. [...] Her absence will likely mean more playing time for freshman forward Tori McCoy and junior forward Alexa Hart, who is expected to return Sunday against Iowa after sitting for Ohio State's game at Wisconsin last Saturday with a sprained ankle.

Iowa plays Ohio State today.

Good fight but couldn't maintain it to the end.

I am not sure what to think about our tourney profile. RPI says we are safe, but some of the key metrics are iffy such as top 50 wins.

It was a really good fight today, much better than I expected. A few poor decisions down the stretch was the difference, the youth showed up at the worst time. If they can hold home court & steal one of the two road games (NU, @IU, @PU, WI) I'd feel pretty good but add a win in the BIG Tournament it would likely be a lock.

Yep, a couple of big mistakes by Doyle down the stretch, her 4th foul and also a turnover where she dribbled into a corner, got double-teamed, tried to jump-pass out of it and got picked off. Another was an off-target pass from Disterhoft to Cole, which was stolen.

OTOH, the effort was there, and OSU is pretty good. I thought we really worked hard in our zone, in particular Kastanek when she was in there.

Right now we're in 8th place - personally I don't think the NCAA will invite 8 B10 teams regardless of RPI's, so hopefully now that Maryland and OSU are out of the way we can run the table and move past some teams.

Like your optimism jockos, but I think that still makes them squarely on the bubble.

Certainly no guarantee at home vs. NU. Doubtful at IU. Possible at Purdue, but Mackey Arena has left this coaching staff battered and bruised. At home vs. Wisconsin should be a win.

I only have access to yesterday's updated RPI, which had Iowa at 47. Don't forget their RPI will drop a bit just by playing Purdue (95) and Wisconsin (208).

I mentioned this in an earlier post, but still think worst case regular season scenario would be 17-12/8-8. Best case is probably 18-11/9-7.

Either way I think 2 wins in the Big Ten Tournament are going to be needed to feel better about an NCAA bid. Even then it still will be dicey.

All of the remaining teams are beatable. They were right there until the end with Michigan and OSU.
I watched NW and Indiana and neither played well. Purdue and Wisconsin are winnable. The Hawks just need to keep working, keep improving, and play hard every minute.
As young as they are, there is still a lot of upside.

I like your thinking, oakhawk. I agree with you that all four remaining games are winnable. The key will be keeping our guards out of foul trouble, something they have been prone to do.

I would love to see them get a double bye in the BTT. Looking at everyone's remaining schedule, the top three spots are a lock for Maryland, Ohio State and Michigan. And the bottom four spots are a lock for Illinois, Rutgers, Nebraska and Wisconsin. That fourth spot on top will be a dogfight among five teams (all but Northwestern and Minnesota). I would give Indiana the inside track based on the easiest schedule, but if Iowa does win out I think it is theirs.

BTW, I heard a rumor that Christina Buttenham is deep in Lisa's doghouse, based on her lackadaisical attitude. She didn't play again today. I'll edit this out if anyone objects.
I don't know who your source is, but lazy is the last word that should be used to describe Buttenham..

She isn't lackadaisical during the game in my opinion, but does make mistakes, but don't we all. I do notice that she seems to goof around and joke around a lot during TOs, etc., but the team as a whole tend to be loose and not uptight. It's just something I have noticed, and probably doesn't mean anything. I don't see her during practice, but it is baffling to me that she hasn't played recently.

Disterhoft needs 102 points to tie Iowa's all-time scoring record of 2,059 set by Cindy Haugejorde (1976-80). She has four regular season games left plus at least one B1G10 tourney game and at least one postseason game in some tournament. In her last games she has scored:
four games, she has scored 92 points.
five games, she has scored 108 points.
six games, she has scored 125 points.

I am all for team goals, but it would be nice if Ally got the record.

Not to nitpick, I thought Disterhoft didn't score a lot of points at Michigan so I checked the box scores. My calculation had her scoring 81 points the last four games, with 14 at Michigan. Would have got the win if she indeed scored 92 in the last four games!

Mak Meyer is the B1G FR of the week. Back to back career highs in points. Against OSU she was 6-7 (3-3 from 3pt).

Meyer is player who is stepping up since Davis injury.. Was impressed that she drove lane and drew fouls to get to FT line. Even better that she made most of them. If she and Disterhoft can keep producing points, that will make things easier for Gustafson inside too. Hoping it happens along with Doyle continuing her solid play.

I was starting to worry that Meyer had hit the freshman wall, but the Davis injury seems to have revived her.

Listened to the Lisa Bluder talk show last night. Sounded like she has settled in on the 8 player rotation that we have seen the last 2 games. She said that minutes after that are going to be hard to come buy.

Did you expect the top 8 to be Disterhoft, Meyer, Doyle, Gustafson, Coley, Kastenek, Stewart, and Ollinger? That's been it midway thru the second quarter.

No, but then they didn't have the 2 injuries back on Monday. Someone did call in and ask how Ollinger was doing. Lisa said that she really needs to work on her defense. And also said she had a great practice Monday.

Too many TOs kept NW close. And three touch fouls on Megan.
I held my breath when Chase got tripped by Coffey. But she came back and had a good game as a starter.
Amanda Ollinger got in for the first time in forever and did some good things. She got a little wild and had to sit for a bit, but her rebounding and a big three were big pluses.
Hope that Christina and Bre can be cleared soon on the concussion protocols.

Little concerning that brea and Christina were not even on the bench. I know concussions are tricky and all are different, but if the could not even come to game that is scary

Christina had been at the last couple of games. It might have been something school related that they went with instead of sitting since they knew that they couldn't go in. Best case.

Christina went through all the warmups the last games when she didn't play. Don't believe you can do that when you're under concussion protocol. Must have happened in practice this week.

I watched tonight's game on BTN (I've been stuck in Baltimore for 30+ yrs) so that option along w/BTN+; very thankful. I remember driving around in my car trying to get WHO on AM; had to find the best reception spots - lots of driving and nail-biting. Later on, I was able to follow along in other ways, but yes, BTN is a good thing. Still many issues to work out, but I don't know what I'd w/o it.

Team stepped up as a whole tonight, and it was needed to win this game. Very impressed with their overall effort, and I am more than happy with the win! On to Sunday and defeating any and all Purdue Boilermakers on their own court Sunday! Hawkeye coming through!

Bluder said after Thursday’s win Cera and Buttenham are “a day-to-day thing. With concussions, you just never know,” and Davis is out for the rest of the season. With all that in mind, it was a victory of high importance for more than one reason.
First it was Tania Davis, the Iowa women’s basketball team’s point guard, who went down with a season-ending injury. Then, this week — in separate incidents — the Hawkeyes lost forwards Bre Cera and Christina Buttenham to concussions.
