To get there a team needs a very good coach, exceptional guard play and the ability to play defense.
Its easy to see what it takes when watching teams that make the sweet 16.

It's something like 5 out 65 P5 teams that have longer drought than Iowa to sweet16.
Do you think the mid major programs that haven't made the sweet16 are paying their coach $3 million/yr?
Assist to turnover ratio guys. Our guards excel in that. Forget watching Pickett or Bouie or those guys. Let’s concentrate on the good things.
Of the 65 teams in the five power conferences, 54 have made it to the Sweet 16 in the 21st century. Iowa is one of only 11 power 5 programs that haven’t made it.
How hard is Defense? Good defense creates mental toughness! And focus. Maybe D, is not as loud as $$$, They say $$$ yells long and loud. Anyway Catlin and teammates on today.. Go Hawks...
