What I learned at NCAAs this weekend

Any other names being thrown around? It did look like Tom maybe is seeing the writing on the wall with his comments after the tournment.

Did he have any long interviews after the tournament? I just saw a 2 minute one and it didn't leave me feeling optimistic.

David is Caels original prodigal son. He was his first big recruit, he was willing to go to Ames for Cael and happily followed him to psu. I'd actually credit DT with psu's current success as much as Cael. Cael was not an overly exciting wrestler, nor is he a particularly engaging personality. His style and personality are not what you see from psu now. What you see now is an extension of DT and that's what excited young wrestlers and largely drew them to psu. He started the dynasty as much as Cael did.
While I think he'd be the perfect choice to take over the program, I don't see Cael or psu letting it happen. He's got to be the next in line. There's no way they don't have a plan in place to keep him in happy valley. I'd love to be wrong but I'm just not seeing it.
Yo are probably right but he isn't replacing Carl for the next 20 years and Casey is the best coach on the staff (including Carl), so he isn't taking his spot.

Feels like that would more than likely be a move for the next season, but don't love the idea of Tom being a lame duck coach.

Either way, if you believe you can upgrade, the timeline is less important than getting your guy. It would put the new guy behind the 8 ball for the first year, but this move isn't about one year. It's a long-term play.

Exactly. If it works out, you can benefit for decades. No reason to rush a hire. Get your guy. But also, if that guy is fielding offers from other teams you better be ready to bring them in.

You don’t want that. You want an Olympic champion coming in as a coach.

Also, what happens to Spencer if Tom/Terry are canned?
Hawk fans would continue to pay for Spencer to train in the HWC. His decision at the end of the day, and we'll cheer for him no matter what. (Maybe unless he shits all over Iowa on his way out the door like Gilman did).

To believe this, it would mean you would have to believe Beth is openly discussing personnel matters with the general public. Do people really believe this is the case? So our AD is openly discussing personnel matters, and already has conducted off-season reviews, prior to the end of the season? Sounds to me like typical national tournament rumor and inuendo.

I agree with you, but we all want to believe right now. Either way kudos to Gadson for publicly planting that seed by @ing them both on Twitter.

Well he's abrasive and verbally abusive and frequently acts like a lunatic.

Getting caught on a hot mic at SS calling Schwab a pussy was a bad look. But it was par for the course for the SS.

We put together what was supposed to be a showcase event and we may as well have held the event under a red and white striped tent.
So what? It’s freaking competition, don’t like it go watch women’s wrestling

Good points. Psu alums would pony up any monies necessary to insure DT doesn't seriously consider the job. Won't happen. Fun read though.

This. What ‘plan’ could they possibly have for David for the next 10-15 years? If Iowa offers him $650-750k/year, there’s nothing PSU could come up with to compete outside of giving him the keys to their program. Which isn’t going to happen for a long time unless something crazy happens. Is DT gonna wait around for that?

Well, they apparently have so much money that they could pay him to basically do nothing. Or anything but coach another program?

The plan might be that Taylor doesn't feel like taking a D1 job at this time or is planning to do something at PSU in a time frame no one knows about outside of him and Cael, and maybe a select few others.

Cael and Casey aren't staying another 20. I'd be shocked if either stay another 10. Casey's older than Cael and he's been in the coaching game 25 years now. I'm guessing they pass Gable's national championships number and pull the plug.

Ill look for the interview but Cael said he is staying until he is 60... how much longer is that?

Are you for real?

Cael’s 20 matches at NCAAs:

1999: Fall, Major (18-6), Fall, Fall, 6-1
2000: Fall, Tech, Tech, Major (16-5), Major (19-6)
2001: Tech, Fall, Tech, Major (21-7), 8-4
2002: Fall, Fall, Tech, Major (18-7), Major (12-4)
I think you're confusing exciting with dominant. He was certainly dominant.
Stylistically I'd say he was closer to Iowa style than current psu. His attacks werent incredibly versatile, he didnt have a ton of unique turns and he certainly never looked like he was having a ton of "F*n" on the mat ;).
The shame of it is you watch TnT matches and it blows me away we are less and less a reflection of their styles every single year. Never thought I'd see the day.

We totally wrestle their style. Its always moving forward and quick one move attack's It just use to work better because everyone tried to wrestle that style and Iowa kids were better. Now it is about scrambling and being smart in matches and its passing the Iowa trained kids by.

Cael was very exciting, im not sure I agree with that either but maybe it was exciting because of the streak.

Damn it!! i was hoping it was true

Kind of putting your neck out there with all this, DT stuff.
Anything you supposedly "heard", would be hearsay, with no actual concrete information.
Not at all.

Kyven’s tweet said the AD wanted to talk to DT AFTER the Olympics. I was very clear that with that info being out, I don’t know if the talks would be sped up or tossed out altogether.

BG is NOT targeting Taylor. Zero discussions have been had with the primary donors to the program regarding this. This wasn't a leak, it's a rumor to cause a ruckus within the fan base and hopefully impact recruiting. If you think BG would leak anything of this order during nationals, you need to stop taking stupid pills every morning.

And Nelson hasn't been cleared for next year yet. Another falsehood in the original post.
You sound like youre in the know. I hope boosters are putting pressure on Beth to make some changes. No chance you guys can be happy with the way the program is headed.

I had to go back and dig it up, but I recall listening to David Taylor several years ago on the podcast Askren and Tommy Rowlands used to have. They specifically asked him if he would want to coach at Iowa, and he said it was something he would be interested in, one of the dream job positions out there. No idea about any of the rumors here, and the podcast is hypothetical speculation from 7 years ago now, but interesting nonetheless.

The impetus for the question to DT was Askren going into his issue with Iowa's style (basically lack of focus on scrambling), and DT offers his thoughts on the matter. Interesting to listen to regardless.

The relevant part starts around 45:40.

Thank you!! That was a freaking great interview, and insightful into DT's mindset. I've never heard this one. Damn, I hope he turns you guys down. You can tell he believes in what he's preaching and from experience. That was 7 years ago. I'm sure he believes it even more now because he trains it at M2 every day.

Also, what happens to Spencer if Tom/Terry are canned?

Realistically, I think Spencer may not be tied to Tom. There has to be some part of him that realizes he sacrificed his Freestyle career for years in order to remain loyal to the team - and I have to believe that was at Tom's stringent request.

A friend of mine spoke with Spencer at length in Acapulco, and he said Spencer said he was really looking forward to his "next career." That sounds like a kid who is kind of happy to be done with college and ready to put that in the rearview mirror.

Tnt probably arent ready to retire. Wonder where they would go, maybe to a big ten or back down south? Wonder who they would take with them?
Terry did reportedly interview at NC. They could've had the heads up about what was coming with another "down" year at the national tourney.

Yes exactly we do. That's the problem with the general fan bases that they think that we don't. It's probably the whole geolocation of being close to New York City with Penn State, but in fact we actually do have just as much money if not more. We just happened to be more quiet.
The problem is we are talking about two different things. NIL money Iowa has more of. Money that goes to wrestlers or promised to wrestlers when they are done with PSU is through the roof. The money they get to be apart of the NLWC is something that we can only dream about here. So when people say they took less money to go to PSU it is true, but the money that is earmarked for them after college sets them up for a long time.

This is how they got around NIL for all those years. Of course this was explained to me by someone who I think would know but i could be way off.

He has always said he looks forward to Freestyle way more than Folkstyle.
