Would you fire your son? That is assuming that he hasn't done anything to be fired for cause like showing up to practice drunk or made racial slurs to players? OK. Skip that last one.. In any case, I don't believe that Kirk is going to put anything before family. I get why people are mad, but most people would put family first, and that's just a fact. This is a well reasoned post about why we should largely support KF and what he has accomplished here.
Yet the disadvantages you laid out don't suggest iowa is in position 130 of 131 either.
I don't expect us to be OSU. Yet it's also not too much to expect an offense better than BFs. I think Iowa fans would be happy with an O that averaged in the mid 60s nationally!
We all know if BF wasn't the coaches son, he'd be fired. That means nepotism is the only reason he remains OC, and that's a horrible abuse of the fans by KF.
Look at the top 8 teams on average the last 10 years. What is their average recruiting ranking and then look at ours. Then also look where most every 5 star kid in highschool has come out of the last 10 years (hint mostly all south and south east with California also having its share) and you wanna try to get those kids here to Iowa City??? Damn near impossible task without a boat load (barge load) of cash and prizes.Reading the "we are Iowa and can't compete with other schools" posts make me sad. How has such apathy happened? Is it a holdover from the dark days of the '60s and 70s? Is it out of fear of change? Is it being satisfied to just go to bowl games?
I agree Iowa does not have some of the advantages other schools do. But seasons like 2002, 2009, and 2015 have proven the Hawks CAN be one of the top teams.
The defense this season was one of the best in all of college football. If the offense was even middle of the pack, they likely would have won 10+ games, played in a NY6 bowl, and possibly finished in the Top 10 (and Iowa has finished in the Top 10 multiple times under Kirk).
Maybe Iowa can't consistently reel in 5* players.....but to say they can never expect to compete on the national stage is hogwash.
Of course we should not overlook the negative effect on recruiting that our wretched, godforsaken, desolate CLIMATE has.Look at the top 8 teams on average the last 10 years. Now that it is legal for fans to put the cash in the football ATM to get recruits its time to put up or watch things stay the same.
What if we get the right coach? What 8f the genius stays? What if Iowa can compete...Your inability to express your or even a reality-based solution to all of the reality based disadvantages that just popped of my head, says it all as well.
It says you do not understand wishing and being are two very different things. It's easy to wish and build sand castles in the air, in a world where your emotional preference becomes a substitution for factual reality. Everything necessary to raise Iowa to the new level you seek begins with the saddest words in the English language, "what if". What if we hire a genius? What if that genius is a power recruiter? What if the right assistants are on board? What if the genius is a cheater? What if that genius is a grifter, just looking for a bigger pay day? If the portal and NIL create a bidding frenzy, which it inevitably will, what if Iowa cannot compete financially for many prime recruits. Where's our Phil Knight coming from? We don't even market the program in Des Moines.
Michigan and Ohio get as much or more snow then Iowa. Hell Southbend is that as well and you can throw Nebby in the shitty weather category and nothing else in the state (yet they pull in recruits).Of course we should not overlook the negative effect on recruiting that our wretched, godforsaken, desolate CLIMATE has.
(I just moved 7000+ tons of snow.)
Correct but KF made this hire and continues to employ his kid. He had to have some thought of what he'd do if this didn't work out.Would you fire your son? That is assuming that he hasn't done anything to be fired for cause like showing up to practice drunk or made racial slurs to players? OK. Skip that last one.. In any case, I don't believe that Kirk is going to put anything before family. I get why people are mad, but most people would put family first, and that's just a fact.
LOL ...no mention of Madison?Michigan and Ohio get as much or more snow then Iowa. Hell Southbend is that as well and you can throw Nebby in the shitty weather category and nothing else in the state (yet they pull in recruits).
It's a crutch.Michigan and Ohio get as much or more snow then Iowa. Hell Southbend is that as well and you can throw Nebby in the shitty weather category and nothing else in the state (yet they pull in recruits).
I know this might sound crazy, but my guess is no he did not consider this as a possibility. If he did I doubt he makes the hire in the first place. I think that Kirk probably believed in his son and in his own ability to cover for any potential weaknesses. From this perspective Kirk would see Brian's failure as his failure. They sink or swim together.Correct but KF made this hire and continues to employ his kid. He had to have some thought of what he'd do if this didn't work out.
You might be right. What a mess Barta has created/allowed to happen.I know this might sound crazy, but my guess is no he did not consider this as a possibility. It’s Kirk’s offense. I will say this over and over and over. Kirk chooses the QB that starts. Ken O Keefe recruited and eval’ed QBs for Kirk. Kirk chose our current center. That was not Brian’s idea. I think Polasek is the one that broke our OL recruiting. I have heard he was abrasive. Opposite of Reese Morgan type. Yes Kirk chose Polasek as OL coach but I think thankfully he is gone.I know this might sound crazy, but my guess is no he did not consider this as a possibility. Including winning the winnable games. Lost 3 of them last year because of this middle school offense.. In any case, I don't believe that Kirk is going to put anything before family.
Well, I did say Iowa can't consistently reel in 5* players.Look at the top 8 teams on average the last 10 years. What is their average recruiting ranking and then look at ours. Then also look where most every 5 star kid in highschool has come out of the last 10 years (hint mostly all south and south east with California also having its share) and you wanna try to get those kids here to Iowa City??? ISU does play the transfer game in basketball. And we kicked their asses in December.Well, I did say Iowa can't consistently reel in 5* players.
Iowa has already proven you can be a Top 10 team without a roster full of 5 stars. Under Phil, the Hawks have consistently fielded an above average or better defense (without a bunch of 5 star players!). Not having at least an average offense has cost Iowa 2-3 Big 10 championship game appearances over the past several years.
No, Iowa probably will never be a national title contender. But they can be (and have been) a Top 10 team, without 5* players.
But I agree in order to compete now and in he future, it will take money. And Iowa needs to be a player in the NIL game.
As for getting kids to come to Iowa City........I know basketball is different, but ISU seems to have no problem getting top recruits. And they have gotten some pretty good skill position players in football, too.
What is their ranking compared to Iowa? And when did they last make a Sweet 16? Has Iowa made a Sweet 16 lately?ISU does play the transfer game in basketball. And we kicked their asses in December.
Another issue, in addition to the climate, is our antiquated, predictable, shitshow offensive scheme.Michigan and Ohio get as much or more snow then Iowa. Hell Southbend is that as well and you can throw Nebby in the shitty weather category and nothing else in the state (yet they pull in recruits).
Can we see how the year plays out? We did win a Big Ten title last year. What is their ranking compared to Iowa? And when did they last make a Sweet 16? Has Iowa made a Sweet 16 lately?
One game doesn't mean anything. Iowa lost to ISU in football, but had a far superior season.
Yup.It’s Kirk’s offense. Why doesn’t Kirk fire Brian???? Keep this a secret, but it’s because the offense is Kirks and Brian is doing what Dad tells him to do. Shocking huh?
I never said Iowa won't/can't end up having a good season. Not once. Can we see how the year plays out? We did win a Big Ten title last year.
What if we get the right coach?
If obfuscating has an attitude of hope, then you have an attitude of fear. That is precisely why I began with the list of schools that followed your search for the "right coach". There aren't very many of them, literally probably not 100 in the entire United States. All of those coaching changes began with the hope, not knowledge because future performance is tautologically unknowable, of something better than they had. Every one of those coaching changes failed to even reach Iowa's current level of success. Since failure is much more probable than success (e.g. all the coaching failures I cited-and that is just the tip of the iceberg) moving from our current coach to another risks the success we have, and we're a top 30 program, in the gamble of doing better. Since the risk of failure is much higher than the probability of success you are proposing a course of action based entirely on the hope that somehow, Iowa beats the odds, again.
Your continued inability to address even one of Iowa's disadvantages and how those disadvantages are getting worse not better shows your ideas are built on hope; and hope is not a strategy. My grandfather owned a casino and we've been in gambling since the grandparents arrived from Greece. Your kind of thinking made us rich. Split those sixes and hope for a five card under, right?
Your dribble is crazy. You could say all your nonsense in a couple of sentences. Why do you think you have to write a book to make a simple point?Your inability to express your or even a reality-based solution to all of the reality based disadvantages that just popped of my head, says it all as well.

Day-um! GOT to give him some bonus points for the contextually proper use of the word tautologically!!! SIX syllables!!!Your dribble is crazy. You could say all your nonsense in a couple of sentences. Why do you think you have to write a book to make a simple point?
BORING!!!!
In a sense, yes. I fear that a coaching change will result in the Alford/Lickliter years. Except its so much harder to turn a football team around because you need so many more good players. If obfuscating has an attitude of hope, then you have an attitude of fear.
And for the record, I am not calling for a head coaching change.
No, they didn't win the Big Ten last yearCan we see how the year plays out? We did win a Big Ten title last year.
Agree. This dumb "we kicked their ass in one game" mentality. Who gives a shit. Clowns would make the final 4 and iowa fans would be pounding their chest over 1 game. What is their ranking compared to Iowa? And when did they last make a Sweet 16? Has Iowa made a Sweet 16 lately?
One game doesn't mean anything. Iowa lost to ISU in football, but had a far superior season.
JFC. Let's stay mediocre out of fear!!! TCU fired a tenured successful coach and gasp! Look what happened. In a sense, yes. I fear that a coaching change will result in the Alford/Lickliter years. Except its so much harder to turn a football team around because you need so many more good players.
This is the difference between his hope and my fear. Statistical probability of the outcomes. That is what differentiates my rational fear of a big regression and his irrational hope that Iowa beats the long odds against a coaching change improving our position. A new coach's failure, anywhere, is far greater than the probability of success.
Surrendering to an emotional impulse without engaging in risk or cost/benefit analysis is fundamentally irrational. You can tell Ob has not even contemplated the downside or the hurdles any Iowa coach faces. For example, any HC coaching change means PP is gone too. So, we won't have that factor, the highly probable existence of an excellent defense every season.
But, dream on, dreamers. There's a magic coach out there that can overcome Iowa's small size, small budget, small media footprint and shitty weather. There might even be such a coach out there but given the strong probability we don't find him I am unwilling to risk what we have, which is a nice top 30 program that wins 8-10 games most years on the long shot of something better and the risk of something much worse.
Here's a test, and be truthful. Would you go down a cave to find $1B in gold bars and tax free if you knew you had a 3% chance of finding it and a 97% chance of being killed by pitfalls or big predators?
It happens all the time in the coaching profession. Especially in football which is chock full of nepotism, inbreds, and retreads. You might be right. What a mess Barta has created/allowed to happen.
Do you think they will ever be back? Were they ever at the level before? Flash in the pan. Also, Cinncy was propelled by the growing backlash against only P5 representation in the playoffs.Cincinnati and TCU made the playoffs the last two seasons, obviously it is unreasonable to expect Iowa to reach that level. If Iowa could only get into a conference with the highest level of revenue.
I guess it is easier to keep the OC of one of the worst offenses in CFB, and a basketball coach that has never made the Sweet 16. Just keep the status quo. Too risky otherwise
JFC. Let's stay mediocre out of fear!!! TCU fired a tenured successful coach and gasp! Look what happened.
The mess that's won 37 games in the last four full seasons. That kind of mess. That includes three seasons with Spencer Petras starting at QB. I want more wins but I'm not crazy enough to realize what we risk.It happens all the time in the coaching profession. Especially in football which is chock full of nepotism, inbreds, and retreads.
Men’s basketball won the big ten last year. Yes. They. Did.No, they didn't win the Big Ten last year
Again.....I am not calling for Kirk to be fired. In a sense, yes. I fear that a coaching change will result in the Alford/Lickliter years. Except its so much harder to turn a football team around because you need so many more good players.
