What a great question. I don’t know if I can answer one way or the other because it’s so different.

16 – only responsibility I had was going to school and working at my uncles gas station. No stress at all and enough money to enjoy myself.
Fun, chasing girls, playing sports, partying and not worrying about getting home to the wife or anything like that. So much fun with friends.

48 – love my family, enjoy spending time with my kids and grandchildren. Own a nice home with a backyard that’s basically like a resort so summers are amazingly fun. Can pick up and go on vacation whenever we want, financial freedom is very nice. Enjoy going home from work to my wife and spending time with her.

I CAN'T DECIDE!

at 16 a ton of optimistic paths were possibilities while now most of those paths are closed off and some of the remaining options include worrisome possibilities

i wondered if it would have something to do with unconsciously distracting oneself away from impending (as one ages) death. but you were looking in the other directon (past)

I would love to go back to 2001. Senior year of college. I had my job contract signed already, I was taking my 2nd semester classes pass fail. I was pounding puss and cheap drinks every day. Absolutely an amazing time in my life.

Interesting question. Living in Lima, Peru as a 16 and 17 year old was a substantially different experience than what you would experience in America. Once Guzman was captured and Peru opened up over night, it was a very good time. Spending summer break (Christmas) either at the beach, beach club, golf club, bar and/or night club. Only rule was I had to be home for lunch on Wednesday and mass Sunday. Then my buddy and I started getting into the casinos at 16....very good times.

Could you read in 2001, because the question isn't whether you'd go back to 21.

Can I have both?

16 for me was great, I had more money working part time and during the summers, I had my own car, played sports, had lots of friends, was in much better shape and my body didn’t hurt.

Life is good now having freedom and a family but it sucks how much time work takes up and having less spending money than what I had when I was 16. No time or money now days to do the fun things I did back then.

High school was boring outside of extracurriculars. When I was 16 I was still living under my parent's roof and their rules. So no, I'm doing much better now, thank you very much.

At 16 I didn't have much money or a girlfriend.

I had a ton of great friends and we were really good at sports which was fun.

Of course the freedom to do whatever and whenever was the best.

Nothing compares to being an adult with a great family/kids though.

At 16 I had a girlfriend, was playing 4 sports and had lots of time to play video games.

Now I have a wife, no hobbies, and no free time.

When I was 16ish I was dating my future wife/x wife. Fast forward to yesterday. I had to do some calculating for child support because our government is inept. Putting pen to paper, I have spent/lost over 100k since our divorce in 2018, not including my legal fees. Oh JFC, here I go being all JR and shit! All things considered, I am quite thankful for both past and present.

Don't do that... trust me. I did that after the last child support payment and regret it.

I had to go back to the decree to look at the fine print and it led me down a rabbit hole. Kind of a tough pill to swallow.
Yeah it is, my son even lived with me the last 2 to 3 years before he turned 18 and I still had to pay that beeyatch the child support. Wasn't any different then paying a lawyer so I was out the money either way. My luck though I would have gotten a lawyer and lost.

Our daughter was over 18 so I didn’t have to worry about that, however in the fine print regarding our son, he turned 18 but I have to pay until graduation. I don’t mind paying for child support even though financially I have gone way above and beyond. However, she came after my business, so I owe another 100k+.

Sorry, that just pisses me off. Like you said, I didn't mind paying child support. It pissed me off that I also paid for all of his clothes and for any school function and everything else. Meanwhile her credit was f'd so she saved the first 18 months of checks and paid cash for a mustang. But I'm over it 24 years later! :D

About the same but for obviously completely different reasons.
Being 16 in the early 90s was great. Social life, school and athletics were great experiences overall which only come around once in life. Our high school class was legendary and we could do things then you just can't now.
Home life generally sucked, step dad was a raging a hole so that I dont miss. Ironically enough we get along great now... (he was undiagnosed type 1 diabetic for much of his life so we think that was a big reason for him being such a dick.)
Now I'm better off with a great family, 3 great kids, an amazing spouse, a super rewarding career and life generally being pretty darn good. Getting older sucks but it's all part of the journey.
I don't think I'd go back to 16 if I could buy there's parts I definitely miss.

I believe I posted some of the details years ago which I won’t do again. However, if I wrote a book, you would think it was fiction.
