2023 Recruiting. Orig Post Updated Jan 1. ZERO Scholarships Currently Available. 34 Offers So Far (incl. Pryce Sandfort, Owen Freeman, Brock Harding)

Iowa, Wake and Rutgers are finalists here

I don't see any recruiting publisher or analyst from any site making a prediction yet.

For those who didn't read the story: he's visited Iowa and Wake Forest officially, and Rutgers unofficially. He will attend the Rutgers men’s basketball game Saturday. He then will make his decision over the weekend.

Sounds like Rutgers.

This is a story from this afternoon. Note the potential NIL issue in regards to "1 more (signing) likely to come."

McCaffery said during a recent news conference that he was looking to add another prospect to this class, and the top target, according to Tom Kakert of HawkeyeReport.com, is big man Ladji Dembele of Newark, New Jersey. Dembele (6-8, 230) visited Iowa City during the Iowa-Northwestern football weekend. He’s a so-called “late bloomer” and has Iowa, Rutgers and Wake Forest high on his list. As is the new world in recruiting, NIL money could become a deciding factor here, and McCaffery has been steadfast in saying he wouldn’t go along with giving more money to an incoming prospect than he would for a currently rostered player.

The FULL Story:

Don't like the second visit.

It appears to be his one and only visit to Rutgers, and it's not an official visit per the post above.

Looks like Saturday will be Ladji's 2nd visit to Rutgers in the last week.

Per his Rivals page, he visited Wake Forest Nov 4 and Rutgers unofficially on Nov 6. Another recruiting site confirmed this & wrote that he completed his unofficial visit to Rutgers on Nov 6.

The article above says he will attend the Rutgers men’s basketball game this Saturday, Nov 12 (not sure if official or unofficial) and then will make his college choice over the weekend.

Timing of offers:
Apr 12 Wake Forest
Oct 21 Iowa
Oct 25 Rutgers

Visits:
Oct 29, Iowa, official
Nov 4, Wake Forest, official
Nov 6, Rutgers, Unofficial
Nov 12, Rutgers

Didn't Dembele commit? The title of this thread seems wrong if so. Or are you just assuming that Kris is gone so Iowa will have at least 5 scholarships available next fall (none of the walk-ons getting put on scholarship)?

The original post has been updated.

In summary:

We currently have NO scholarships available for the 2023 class. This, of course, will change as players come and go via the Transfer Portal or leave early for the NBA Draft.

In Men's basketball, of course, you can have 13 on scholarship.

ONE ADDITIONAL THING TO MONITOR: Anyone listed below as Seniors could potentially play/graduate a year later than CURRENTLY expected; however, THEY COUNT towards the 13 scholarship limit.

Where things currently stand:

2023-2024 Roster (13 on Scholarship; 0 scholarships available):

FRESHMEN: 4 players

6"10" C Owen Freeman

6'0" PG Brock Harding

6'7" SF Pryce Sandfort

6'8" PF Ladji Dembele

SOPHOMORES: 2 players

6'3" PG Dasonte Bowen

6'5" SG Josh Dix

JUNIORS: 2 players

6'7" F Payton Sandfort

6'11" C Riley Mulvey

4 Notable Walk on players:

SENIORS: 1 player

Dante Eldridge (assistant coach Courtney Eldridge's son)--has played 2 years (through 2022) in college, first at William Penn & then Kirkwood CC; a 5'9"combo guard; on May 5, 2022, it was announced that he would be joining the Iowa roster as a walk on.

JUNIORS: 1 player

SOPHOMORES: 1 players

Carter Kingsbury--a 2021 6'5", 230 lb shooting guard; on July 10, 2021, it was announced he would be joining the roster as a preferred walk on. Carter ended up redshirting the 2021-2022 season so he is now scheduled to graduate in 2026.

Pretty incredible that Iowa has no scholarships to give considering Iowa plays ZERO centers and starts a power forward at that spot.

Well IF Kris goes to the draft….and if either Josh O or Riley transfer…..we could have 1 or 2 more to give. Not to mention that Fran could do what he’s done previously with Connor….he could use Patrick’s scholarship for another player.

I would bet that Fran already has an idea of how he will do that…..if the right player is available.

Yes I trust Fran to fix that since the Luka Garza years have yielded no one practically

I agree with you. I think we have at least one early departure; and like you said, that number could be as high as three.

So, what does Fran do with those likely freed up scholarships?

* I think he needs to land a prospect (or two) in the transfer portal.

* I wonder where Saliou Seye will end up. He was offer #33 or the 34 total offers Fran has given out for the 2023 class. Iowa offered September 11, 2022. Things have gone quiet with him.

Stay tuned. ;)
