26 UI student-athletes are being investigated for online gambling, incl in Wrestling, Men’s Basketball, Football, Baseball, Men’s track & field

No, I suspect they didn't know the severity of the consequences.

He's a redshirt senior. How many times do you think he's heard during his entire career at the UI that (1) he cannot gamble and (2) if he does and gets caught, this is what happens.

And remember, the consequences used to be more severe until the NCAA adjusted the penalties in May of this year.

Nelson can claim ignorance but I don't think anyone is buying it. Ok, you appear to be buying it.... ;)

Whether or not, he knew the exact consequences is arbitrary. He knew the rule. I remember my freshman compliance meeting with Fred Mims. I can tell you I walked out of there, not necessarily knowing the full extent of the consequences, but I can certainly tell you I knew what was against the rules and scared shitless to break one of them. The only consequence I was concerned about, was having to explain myself to Fred.

Video from when Nelson's mom & dad found out what Nelson had done:

There is no doubt in my mind they knew that it was wrong. I do suspect he's telling the truth when he didn't know it would cost him his wrestling career.

IMO, he was either (1) not listening/paying attention for the last 5 years; or, more likely, (2) said, "screw it; I won't get caught."

I still want to see an investigation of the investigation. What sparked the whole thing? I have heard 2 rumors:

* mother of an Iowa baseball player thought her account got hacked and she contacted the DCI

* someone from the DCI went rogue and started it, looking for offenders

As usual, I am 100% aligned with my man Franisdaman on this subject.

BTW, the amount of the fines is irrelevant. Athletes and betting is a bad mix that's going to get the attention of any authorities with an ounce of integrity, thanks to decades of history on the subject. Thank goodness this didn't go beyond online betting and small bets. The guys who bet on games they played in have thus far been extremely lucky.

Or ignored what he was being told.

This is Nelson's 5th year in the program, correct?
It’s not a good look for a coaches son to claim missing a compliance meeting was responsible for his ignorance, imo. While he may have had a good reason to miss that meeting, the end result and subsequent use of that excuse are bad optics. Did he think he was above having to attend due to father’s position in the program?

Probably most concerning is that most compliance programs require an attestation that all attended said trainings. Did the Iowa athletic department not obtain Nelson’s attestation or worse did Nelson sign one without attending? Either way not good and ill advised aspect of his tweet. Just not smart of him….at all. His last name makes it all ironic, or exasperated or something….He is held to different standards being a Brands.

You'll have to ask Vodka, the board's compliance expert.

Good grief...it is completely feasible (1) he knew it was wrong & (2) he didn't realize the consequences. Yeah, he knew he'd get in trouble...but I don't for 1 second not believe him when he says he didn't think it would cost him his career.

There are a lot of people every day on a college campus (& elsewhere) who do things "against the rules" & know it is against the rules...without completely grasping the consequences if they get caught. Things like drinking under age, doing drugs, gamble under age, drink & drive, copy answers off a friend's test or homework, etc, etc...the list can go on & on..."kids" see/hear all their peers doing it...so they think I'll do it too...and they don't 100% know the consequences completely, even though they know it is wrong.

Nelson should've been front and center of every meeting on his schedule. For obvious reasons. There is no excuses for that.

Still, the penalties are way to harsh imo. It's OK to disagree with that. Just my honest opinion

Kirk Ferentz agrees with you, FWIW. Unfortunately it didn't help Noah Shannon, who was a starter on the Defensive Line. His appeal to the NCAA got denied; his Hawkeye career is over. I am guessing the wrestlers' appeals get denied, too.

No matter what, if you are a student athlete caught gambling, there's going to be a penalty. Every student athlete knows this, so why even risk it? I guess they don't want to wait until they are 22 or 23, when they are done with college. Nevertheless, the NCAA has made it very clear, even with the recent rules changes: if you want to be a student athlete, you need to hold off from gambling until your NCAA eligibility is up.

Lets just stick to gambling, ok? He's been in the program for 5 years and you honestly think he didn't realize the consequences?

And don't forget that before May, 2023, the consequences were much more severe, and Nelson would have known this, too. For example, it used to be if you bet on ANY SPORT at ANY LEVEL (college, pro, etc) where the NCAA sponsors a championship, you got a one year ban. Well, Nelson admits in his tweets to betting on NFL games, college football games, MLB games, college basketball games and overseas tennis matches. The NCAA sponsors championships in all of these sports, of course.

So, no, I don't buy him claiming ignorance on the issue.

And what follows, again, is what he wrote. Do you agree with Nelson when he said it was a "no brainer" to gamble when he's been told OVER AND OVER to not do it because there will be serious consequences if he did? Or, do you think he should have used his brain and simply refrained from gambling until his college eligibility was up?

Well, it WAS a no brainer.

Well, it WAS a no brainer.

So, you agree with Nelson and think it was a no brainer to gamble and risk getting caught, where he knew that if he got caught, he'd automatically lose at least a year of eligibility, effectively ending his college career.

Interesting.

I disagree with Nelson and I disagree with you. And that happens on message boards.

No. I don’t think he was using much, if any of his brain.

Everyone knows, don’t text and drive. Don’t play on your smartphone while you drive. How would we all feel if geo location technology was used for the last year and today you found out you had to pay for all of those texting while driving offenses? And it could get ugly. f you were going over 84mph while texting, suspended license. Multiple violations, habitual offenders, five year suspended license.

How many of you would change your smartphone habits if you knew they’d be monitoring your cell phone use while driving? Would it be more acceptable if they said explicitly, “for the next year you’ll be watched via technology and issued warnings. After that fines and suspensions.”

And to those saying this isn’t a good analogy to this gambling situation, I agree. Smartphone use while driving is a much bigger problem. More lives lost, more injuries. Much larger scale.

But yet here we are talking about college athletes, none involved in organized crime or point shaving, being “monitored” and penalized.

This. Or, maybe law enforcement investigated and found you didn't break any laws but they use the data to report it to your insurance company who either jack up your rates or drop you altogether.

Has anybody here visited different places around the Iowa campus lately? Do they have signs scattered around warning college kids about gambling laws and regulations?

That’s what the meetings with athletes are for. They don’t need signs. They have in-person educational compliance training. Way more efficient. Signatures are gathered to show participation and understanding.

I understand all of that. I was just curious

I forget what it is called but there is some device you can get from your insurance company that you plug in where they get all the data of your driving habits. And if you don't speed, don't brake hard when making a stop, come to complete stops, etc, you can get a reduced rate. No way in hell I would do that! I speed too much (always 7 or 8 miles over). They'd drop me! LOL
