Beth needs to get ahold of

The past doesn't relate to the situation we have now. We have a professional offensive coordinator who specializes in working with quarterbacks. And Cade graduates and we have nothing but mobile quarterbacks next in line. I don't see the conundrum in the current circumstances.
I'll have whatever you're having, but I'm just not convinced that KF will relent enough control to an OC. Hopefully Sullivan's role expands beyond a first and goal package.

I think that it has become pretty clear that Kirk has left Lester alone to develop the offense. Lester made the decision to step into a situation where we have a risk averse head coach.

If you listened to the ANF podcast one of them said he doesn't feel ready to see the switch to Sullivan just yet. He didn't do much throwing over the middle at Northwestern a staple of the Lester offense. Lots of dynamics in play but we can see things moving forward.

I think Mark Stoops should be one of the first phone calls. He knows how to build an offense and he breathed life into Kentucky who was historically one of the worst programs in the Power Five.
Mark is 57 - doubt they'd want to bring in a coach at that age. Seth Wallace much more likely to get the job than Mark.

I would have been a bigger Mark fan if we wouldn't have seen such a sad display of faking injuries in our first bowl game against them. It was embarrasingly bad. I don't want that type of stuff in Iowa City.

The jokes write themselves if Iowa brings in Mark Stoops in the back-end of his career considering how everything with Bob played out.

Chris Klieman’s agent to see if he has any interest in the Iowa job.

"Hello Klieman's agent, this is Beth Goetz from Iowa calling to see if Chris has any interest in the Iowa job."

"The Iowa job is open? I didn't realize that."

"Oh, it's not, and likely won't be for a couple more years."

"So, why are you calling?"

"Because isn't this what AD's do - call around to see if employed football coaches are interested in a job that might come open in the future?"

Click.

I’ll be extremely disappointed if Wallace is named head coach. If the U insists on an internal hire Woods is far and away the better choice.

I agree and think the Cyclones have a winner with Campbell. Their trajectory seems on the upswing. Why I seriously think we need to look real hard at the direction of our own program.

Campbell is on the first flight out of Ames the day a job he wants gives him an offer. He's made it pretty obvious he's willing to move on with all of his flirting with other coaching jobs. It will crush the ISU fan base because they aren't going to be able to replace him at the same level of (mostly) success.

They'll keep TJ Otz long term I believe, though.

Klieman is no spring chicken …mid-50’s…He’s done a helluva job in Manhattan, though…Iowa connection, but is this what you want?
I believe there is a change coming in a year or so…Will they stay “in” or go outside the program for the next coach?
Perfect. I don't think it's a good thing to necessarily have a coach hang around for 20 plus years in the world we live in today. 10 to 15 would mean a lot of success and gone before the fatigue sets in.

I don't get this thought process. As difficult as it is to find a winning coach - why would anyone not be grateful for a long term winning program? I mean, look at how difficult it's been to find a coach to take us to the next level in basketball? We've literally been looking for the next Lute Olsen for 40+ years. And that's a sport where it's a lot easier to turn around a losing program as it only takes a couple players.

Iowa is 13th in wins amoing power 5 schools over the past decade and 9th over the past 5. Some day people are going to realize what we have in Kirk.

I have always thought the same thing. The fact that he doesn't get hired maybe reflects his personality. Campbell probably doesn't make the best first impression on people. He has become a very good coach and has a good gig in Ames. It seems silly to even think he would come here when the time comes to replace Kirk.

He hasn't exactly set the world on fire. Other than the covid year, he has one top-25 finish. I don't think most people consider the covid year a legit year in terms of gauging success. And without that season Campbell has never won more than 8 games - which he hasn't done since 2018.

I don't believe he's achieved enough at ISU to be considered a legitimate high-level coaching candidate. IMO, he needs a big season (other than a fluke covid year) to garner more respect among AD's at major programs looking for a coach.

If you think about Ferentz fatigue it set in about 2013/14 but he saved his azz with the 2015 season and has done well since. It's mostly where we are as a society and no one's attention lasting more than 10 seconds. I love Kirk and what he has done but he's stale and people are tired of his offensive philosophy. Not that it can't work but we've just seen enough. He's got a lot of wins against an extremely weak Big west which puts him above avg but
not a big boy. People are ready for a more aggressive style after 25 years.

So he's mediocre against Iowa.

Seems I've seen that word used on the forum about a million times. Probably fit in with some of the fans here.
And Iowa leads the all time series 47-24. Mediocre is pretty much ISU’s ceiling. Campbell has done a great job.

This century Kirk is 18-24 against PSU, Michigan, and OSU. People love to claim we never beat the big boys, but we've held our own better than most in the BIG.

As for putting us on the next level - what school from a small state in a poor recruiting area consistently competes at an elite level in football? The only two I can think of are Notre Dame and Oregon. Of course Notre Dame has a national recruiting footprint and Oregon has California and very little competition out West. (plus, a bazillion dollars from Nike)

People are extremely naive if they think there is a magic coach out there that's taking Iowa to the next level. Could that person exist? Sure. But if that person truly does exist - good luck finding, hiring, and keeping him.

He's certainly been a good coach for them. Nobody has won there over time. His challenge is he's looking for a better job, but a good year for him in Ames is 7-8 wins. That doesn't convince AD's to hire him, nor would the fan base of a big program get excited with a Campbell hire. (not that most fan bases are very smart) So, he just needs one breakout year to get the better jobs to notice.

I hope Iowa goes outside of the Ferentz coaching tree for the next hire. About 95% sure they won't though.
I’m a bit torn on this issue. The problem with the Ferentz “coaching tree” is that there is exactly one game of FBS head coaching experience among all of them (I don’t count Bielema - he’s a Hayden guy). So there will be several candidates more highly qualified.

The good news is that I’m 10000% more confident in our current AD making the right hire compared to her predecessor.

I'd be confident that the current staff would do well. If Wallace, Parker, Woods, and a few more key coaches stuck around after Ferentz's retirement, I think we'd see positive changes to the game management and consistent success. The program and structure is in place - much easier to continue it with the right people than to try to reinvent it.

Kirk has recruited a mobile QB or two himself. Think Lainez, Resar and the freshman Sullivan coming in. We have Brendan Sullivan now running the red zone offense also very mobile. The fact that we play McNamara first team doesn't mean we don't have mobile quarterbacks in the pipeline.
But those mobile QBs never see the field, so... Not as QBs, anyway.

My response to all of you stuck in the past: who do you think sees the field next season? Cade graduates and we have the heir apparent running the red zone offense now. We put him in that situation because of his athleticism and mobility. The young athletic QBs we have recruited will compete for the backup spot. We won't spend money in the transfer portal when we already have a full QB room.

Some day folks are gonna really miss what Kirk put in the field annually. He’s kinda kind of like Bo Ryan at Wisconsin….folks there were bitchin’ about winning BB games 62-57….like they’d rather lose games 88-82…Now that Bo is gone, some fans are wishing he was still there…

This is probably asked everytime it comes up, but I've never really seen a direct answer. Why is Woods the better choice?
Woods has coached three different position groups and excelled everywhere he’s been put. Wallace has only been the primary coach at one position group but he did assist with CBs and DL in the past. Woods also played in the NFL which never hurts for recruiting purposes.

I would have thought the same thing less than a year ago. But the internal promotion of Wallace above him sent a clear signal don't ya think?
Honestly? Not really. We don’t really know what his actual duties are as “assistant head coach.” It could be completely ceremonial for all we know. And besides, I don’t want KF picking the next coach. Iowa needs a clean break from the Ferentz’s which is why I hope an outsider gets hired.

Why do we need a clean break from the Ferentz's? He's been a great for the school. A very well-respected coach - the stadium/season is sold out every year - and we're winning at a level well above our historical averages at Iowa. And look at where we are compared to our closest rivals - Minn, Nebraska, and Wisconsin - we've had more success than all of them the past 5+ years. In other words, we are in a very good position as a program. And you believe it needs to be blown up? That makes no sense to me.

Sometimes “new blood” improves the bloodlines over time. There are a lot of good coaches out there. Beth’s job is to find the right one. Her future rests on making the right pick.

Guys been the coach for a quarter century and hasn’t made it to a major bowl in nearly a decade, won 1 in his tenure.

He will have a statue, his legacy is indisputable. But all things must end, and Kirk has been Iowa Football for long enough.

The key word there is 'sometimes' - which of course in reality means it's uncommon. And if there were so many good coaches out there it wouldn't be so hard to find one that wins. Again, our basketball program is a great example of what can happen because we think we're gonna get this unicorn coach to come here and take us to the next level.

lol. When the head coach leaves, so do his assistants. If the new HC wants to retain them, that is their choice.

Not if it's an internal hire. Would you have a conniption if someone was promoted after Kirk retired?

I'm a fan of the program he has built here. And although he has his flaws, he definitely has built a winning culture. I think we'd be crazy to move away from the fantastic group of coaches he's assembled. Wallace/Woods/Parker - I'd be happy with any of them.

Dr. Thomas Davis, Steve Alford and Todd Lickliter are very strong arguments against shaking up a winning program.

Because a lot of people on this site are ****ing morons that throw a hissy fit after every play that doesn't go for a touchdown.

I thank God every day for football players everywhere that these people are not their coaches.
