Brawl in Madison

If Fran or many other coaches did this the national media would see to it they were fired.

They like Howard so they will initially act incensed but ultimately let it go fairly quickly and change the narrative.
Is it because he coaches at mi or because he's a rare black coach?

Saw another few replays - impossible not to - and while Howard absolutely needs to suffer the consequences of his actions, no matter what they end up being, by the same token Wisconsin's #0 needs to suffer some consequences, too.

I don't think the brawl between both team's players even starts, let alone reaches the level it does, if #0 doesn't start swinging at - and hitting - Michigan players.

As far as the stuff that happened in the game, playing full court man or calling a timeout, who cares. Being offended by that is soft.

Gard deserves a game or two for grabbing Howard; Howard deserves to be fired.
Grabbing a coaches forearm in a handshake line isn't an aggressive move.

Pushing your way through two of your players/coaches then reaching over another to hit an opposing coach in the head is assault. And it wasn't even the coach he was yelling at. And he came back into the line to do it. So stupid and unnecessary.

After watching the second video; I don't see much that Gard did wrong. It sounds like Howard said "I'm going to remember this $hit" as Gard was reaching out to shake the coach's hand. Howard avoided the hand shake at the same time.

Now, I don't know how Gard typically shakes a coaches hand. I've seen and experienced many people that when they shake someone's hand (with their right hand) they will place their left hand on the person's right arm near the elbow. That's not uncommon.

When the Howard finished the word '$hit' is when Gard briefly grabbed the Howard's elbow. The elbow grab was in reaction to what Howard said. About the same amount of time that Howard then subsequently grabbed the front of Gard's shirt while saying 'don't touch me' (x2) to Gard. The brief grabbing of Gard's shirt with a closed fist was more offensive then the brief elbow grab.

I don't see much wrong with what Gard did during the handshake line.

And Gard stepped back. He removed himself from the confrontation. That Howard lied and said he was defending himself is crazy. He knows he was wrong.

Howard was grabbed 1st. It does not justify his actions, but anyone law enforcement officer or attorney can tell you he would win any type of court hearing in regards to assault.
We have to be careful, the use of the word "Grab" or "Grabbed" like Gard was ready to put him in a headlock or something. I believe it is being overblown, Gard "stopped him" or "grabbed his elbow"

But Howard aggressively grabbed Gard's sweater + put his finger aggressively in Gard's face, and of course threw a punch when no one, NO ONE from WI was touching him.

Just saw a tweet with the eye on Davision. No where during the fighting but keeps charging out saying shit to Michigan when he knew Michigan was leaving the court.

What a puke and a pussy. Need to keep a big defensive end, used up eligibility, on the end of the roster just for guys like Davison.
And Howard. He’s more of a bitch than Davison.

By a lot.

Both sides at fault initially, but Howard went far and beyond by throwing a hand at Krabbenhoft.

Gard reached out to touch/grab Howard's arm and then JH grabbed the front of Gard's sweater and put a finger under his nose as he was telling Gard off.

Am I absolutely sure that Howard just gives Gard the 'blow by' as he walks past him? Not totally 100%. But it sure looked like that was his intention before Gard initiated contact.

In the end, Howard has issues. Between today and the attempt to go after Turgeon at the BTT last season. His taking so much exception to a UW timeout, when he had his starters still in, let alone playing hard, after the game was decided. Like I said, he's got some issues.

I would like to know what Howard and Gard said, before the brawl broke out. That would make it easier to affix degrees of blame between the two. Howard looked like he was going to keep walking in the handshake line, but Gard grabbed him and started chewing on him, which was a provocation IMO. Howard clearly lost his cool and needs to be punished (UM's disappointing season might make that easier for their fans to swallow). Still, I have a little different take than most on this thread. Gard called a timeout in a game that was over, and it's hard to come up with a reason except to rub in the loss for UM. Then, Gard seemed to initiate the confrontation in the line. Probably not coincidently, this reminds me a lot of how UW plays on the court--lots or provocation and initiating physical contact, and then the other team ends up coming away with the short end of the call. The B1G needs to get a complete transcript of what was said by the coaches, including the UW assistant, who Howard slapped (no punch) upside the head. I think there should probably be some punishment dished out for both sides.
He must not have said much. Howard said he was pissed that gard touched him on the elbow and not just the hand

One game suspension and $10,000 fine for a ref stepping into his way, raising his arm, and initiating contact with(leaning into the contact) Fran. And I’m ok with that punishment as Fran was still in the wrong in this situation despite everything I said above.

The conference can’t fine Howard more than $10k and can only suspend him 1 game more. The school better do something more than the conference. And frankly criminal charges would be ok too since the game was over.
I think you have hit the nail on the head, except the part about the arrest. More hassle than it would cost Howard. The courts are too busy for this trivial shite (criminal aspect pleads down to misdemeanor and a deferred prosecution) but it's not trivial in a larger sense. These aren't two drunk college boys on the ped mall at 230 AM.

Both the coaches are highly compensated middle-aged adults that expressly hold themselves out as role models and mentors. They do their thing in front of large TV audiences. Thjs is an NCAA event. The NCAA has a responsibility here. This is a Big Ten responsibility. This is a Michigan and Badger responsibility.

They need to act. You had at least two Michigan and one Badger that were throwing multiple punches.

This is one of those moments of cultural significance. Howard needs hit the hardest. He has history of conflict and stare downs (from a guy 6'8' that probably runs 250) and he went back into the fight after withdrawing so he had time to think about it and he chose to go nuclear. There needs to be some hard messages delivered, nothing past this season but not just one game suspensions either, or get prepared for more fights.

It sounds pretty clear in the video on the previous page that Howard said "I'm going to remember this $hit" to Gard before Gard grabbed the elbow.

Howard's problem is that he tries to coach the other team's players all the time. He and Iowa's bench got into it briefly in the game last year, and the Michigan bench got a warning during the game this year. He's a freaking douche-canoe, who thinks he invented basketball. Opposing coaches are tired of his act. No one can say anything to him or complain to the refs or media for fear of being called the names that get you banished.

What he did in that altercation wasn't okay. Most/many coaches would be fired immediately. Will be interesting to see what the Big 10 does.

The BIG is handicapped at 2 games/10k fine

Im more interested to see what UM does than what the B10 does. The school should be as much heading this up as the conference. Not a great look having the face of one of your major athletic programs acting the way he has not once, but multiple times. Not sure if accurate, but saw in one of the threads the most the conference can give is a 2 game suspension…if UM doesn’t give any additional suspension, thats a pretty bad look on their part IMO

The Michigan AD has apologized to the Wisky AD. As you can see, he calls it " totally unacceptable behavior."

Mary Sue Coleman (remember her?), the interim UM President, has reached out to the Wisconsin Chancellor.

Howard basically lies and blames others and not himself when he said he reacted after someone from Wisconsin (not Gard) put hands on him. "Someone touched me, and I think it was very uncalled for, for them to touch me, as we were verbalizing and communicating with one another. That's what escalated it."

The story from ESPN:

Michigan coach Juwan Howard takes swipe at Wisconsin men's basketball assistant after loss

Jeff Borzello
ESPN Staff Writer

Michigan men's basketball coach Juwan Howard took a swipe at Wisconsin assistant Joe Krabbenhoft's face in the postgame handshake line between the teams, setting off a brawl involving coaches and players from both sides.

Wisconsin coach Greg Gard stopped Howard in the handshake line, leading to the two men exchanging words before being surrounded by a few players and coaches. Howard put his finger in Gard's face and grabbed Gard's sweater before Krabbenhoft came over in the middle of the scrum. Howard then reached out and struck Krabbenhoft's face.

Both teams began pushing and shoving, with Michigan forwards Moussa Diabate and Terrance Williams appearing to throw punches. Wisconsin guard Jahcobi Neath also appeared to throw a punch.

The Big Ten said it would review the matter for "swift and appropriate disciplinary action."

"The Big Ten Conference is aware of a physical altercation involving Michigan Head Coach Juwan Howard at the conclusion of the Michigan Wolverines and Wisconsin Badgers men's basketball game. The conference is in contact with both member institutions and is currently assessing the incident. The conference will provide more information and will take swift and appropriate disciplinary action when it completes its review," the conference said in a statement.

Michigan athletic director Warde Manuel said in a statement that he apologized to Wisconsin AD Chris McIntosh, and university president Mary Sue Coleman was reaching out to Wisconsin chancellor Rebecca Blank.

"I am aware of and watched the end of our men's basketball game. There is no excuse for any of our staff or student-athletes to get into a physical altercation with others regardless of instigating factors. I reached out and apologized to Chris McIntosh and President Coleman has reached out to UW Chancellor Blank to apologize for the totally unacceptable behavior," he said. "We will review the situation more thoroughly and work with the Big Ten Conference as they determine their disciplinary actions and will determine if further disciplinary actions are warranted."

McIntosh had said he had contacted Big Ten commissioner Kevin Warren about the situation, adding that Wisconsin had staff members who were "affected and injured.''

"There's no room, no space for conduct like that in any competition, much less a Big Ten competition," McIntosh said. "The Big Ten takes pride in sportsmanship. The Big Ten takes pride in acting with class. That didn't happen today.''

Howard said he was angry over Wisconsin's timeout usage. Wisconsin called two timeouts in the last minute, including one with 15 seconds left when the Badgers led by 15. Wisconsin won 77-63.

"I didn't like the timeout they called, and I'm being totally honest with you," Howard said. "I thought it was not necessary at that moment, especially with it being a large lead. ... I thought that wasn't fair to our guys. And so that's what happened."

Howard said he reacted after someone from Wisconsin put hands on him, though he didn't specify who did it.

"Someone touched me, and I think it was very uncalled for, for them to touch me, as we were verbalizing and communicating with one another. That's what escalated it," he said.

Gard explained his rationale for the timeouts, particularly the one with 15 seconds left, in a postgame interview with CBS.

"Apparently he didn't like that I called the timeout to reset the 10-second call. Because we only had four seconds to get the ball over half court," Gard told CBS. "I didn't want to put my backups -- I had all my bench guys in the game -- I didn't want to put them in that position of scrambling with only four seconds. So I took a timeout and got us a new 10 seconds and it helped them get organized and get the ball in. And he did not like that when he came through the handshake line. I'll leave it at that and the tape will show the rest."

This isn't Howard's first incident with an opposing coach since taking over at Michigan in 2019. At last year's Big Ten tournament, Howard was ejected after getting into a shouting match with Maryland coach Mark Turgeon. The two head coaches exchanged words before Howard began walking toward Turgeon, with Howard needing to be held back by his assistant coaches.

Some say sports imitates life. I’d say this situation reflects our current culture quite accurately.
A perceived wrong turns into physical violence and the whole thing gets out of control in an instant. Neither party involved takes any personal responsibility for instigating or escalating.

This ain’t Chucky Cheese or Golden Corral. These are highly paid and high profile “leaders of men” after a D1 college basketball game. Michigan has a real problem and so does the B1G. Wisconsin isn’t out of the woods here either.

Look. I don’t like Gard or Wisconsin but in no way did Gard start that. Every Michigan player and coach was fine until Howard. Looked like Gard was stopping him to explain why he called timeout. The whole situation was caused solely by Howard. It’s not the first time he’s gotten into it with an opposing coach either.
You don't get to grab other people and force them to listen to you.

None of that excuses a head coach for taking a swing at a guy. UM needs to come down hard on him for this. Let's see if Mary Sue has the balls to fire him.

Oh, I agree. But if the B1G is going to review video of this game, lets come down hard on Brad Davison as well.

Yesterday he was up to his old tricks.

* He tripped a Michigan player
* He elbowed Dickinson in the ribs on a screen
* He nut punched Dickinson on a screen

You’re blaming Gard for Howard hitting a Wisconsin assistant? Not following your logic?
Not at all, what Howard did was unacceptable and he should be held accountable.

I‘ve explained myself over and over here.

The way to deal with Davison is to put a goon on him. I'm surprised no one has done it yet. The guy jeopardizes the basketball career of every player he takes the court against. One of these days, he's going to cause a severe injury and Wisconsin and the Big Ten will deny culpability.

That would have been how it could be handled as recently as 15-20 years ago. But if you put an obvious goon out there, that person will just end up getting suspended for the entire year, with Wisconsin getting 4 free throws and the ball.

I do agree that there has been enough video evidence of Davison's nonsense that he should have been suspended for at least 1 game years ago. But he does it so the refs don't see it away from the ball and he's free.
