Brawl in Madison

I'm not even sure gard made a big mistake. His mistake may have been engaging with a hothead. Let me know who in that situation lets howard's comment flyby literally. Most coaches are going to want to say something. Placing your hand on someone like that is not uncommon. You can debate whether he should have done it but it's not unusual.
What is uncommon, grabbing someone in the chest in that situation. It says something about Howards character more than gards.

Yes, he walked away after their confrontation but he didn't need to initiate the confrontation.
He didn’t initiate the confrontation. Howard was talking shit to him b4 they met in the line and shook hands. Gards “grab” was to explain why he called the timeout and there was absolutely nothing malicious behind it. Was he supposed to know Howard would lose his mind and go hit another coach? If it would have ended after the initial confrontation, this would be a big nothing burger. Instead Howard kept going and took it to the next level. Sort of like he did with Turgeon last year when he threatened to murder him!

No we don't like Wisconsin but lets lay the blame where it belongs, on Juwan Howard. He is a spoiled little rich kid that if he doesn't get his way, he threatens and intimidates people. He needs to be dealt with swiftly so this doesn't happen again.

After the debacle with Mark Turgeon last year, there is a pattern here. After reading the bottom line on ESPN last night where the scUM AD basically said Howard was wrong but regardless of instigating factors you have to be better than that. He is setting this up so Howard gets a slap on the hand. My hope is the B1G and/or the NCAA steps in here and does the right thing.

I mean, how can you review video OF THIS GAME, hand out suspensions, and NOT hand out a suspension to Davison?

This is AT LEAST THE 3RD TIME he's hit someone hard in the crotch, for crying out loud. And it's obviously deliberate.

I just don't get how that guy is so untouchable.
Was this during the game ?

That's called a hoodlum
the spoiled rich kid just buys whatever he wants :)

Yep, sure but this wasn't that situation at all. Gard was not being gentle and he did GRAB Howards arm. For cripes sake look at the picture I posted or go watch the video. There was nothing gentle about it.
Gard IN NO WAY grabbed Juwan's arm like Juwan grabbed Gard's sweater, which was most definitely threating. Maybe you need to watch it again.

Ouch. IMO Howard should be facing the Bob Knight "zero tolerance" policy at minimum, or fired. No excuse for this kind of crap. Having words for somebody is one thing, but once it becomes physical you've crossed the line.

Does it really matter how you strike him in the head?
I'm not defending Howard, but it's not like he hurt the guy either. He palmed his head. He should know better and unfortunately he let his emotions get the better of him.

Look again. He cupped his elbow and then stepped in front of Howard to start the altercation rolling.
Gard could have just said good game and walked on. Yea Howard retaliated and escalated the confrontation which Gard started by touching Howard's arm and stepping in front of Howard.
Yes people touch in a handshake line, it's crazy....

Watch it in real time, not slow motion. It was a whack. Howard is a big guy and that had to hurt. And he practically dove over a couple of of players/coaches to do it. He definitely forced that action, nothing defensive about it.

He struck someone in the head that never even touched him, his ass needs to go. I'm sure he'll still be making millions though and continue coaching teens

But gard touched his elbow so he had no choice but to slap that dude!!!

It's precisely how conversations go in handshake lines. Howard has been in thousands of them. This was not unusual for him. What was unusual was his temper and state of mind, witnessed by how he immediately grabbed gard.
What is also amazing is the racial lines this has drawn on twitter.

Yes he did, Gard could have kept walking but he chose not too by grabbing Howards arm. Had Gard just kept walking then none of this would have happened.

Why is it so hard for you to comprehend that Gard isn't blameless in this???? More importantly, why are Hawkeye fans defending him?

A brawl occurred after this game, too...

Or not.

any coach or player from either team, should be given a 2 games suspension solely if they had to be held back. If your immediate instinct is to start swinging or get so upset someone has to hold your, you have serious issues.
Anything beyond that should be removal for the season. 14 for michigan Diabate? should be required to get therapy along with howard. This isn't a bar at 2:00 am.

People are seriously trying to make this a racial issue? WOW!!!

But I'm not surprised.

Take what Howard did out of the picture, you get zero argument from me about what Howard did was wrong. NONE...ZERO! I hope Howard gets the max penalty the league office can give and I hope Michigan takes it further.

I'm not saying that per se. It more has to do with who is defending Howard.

I just read an article that used it against Howard.

Both things can be true. Gard should not have put his hands on Howard, regardless of his intentions. Gard strikes me as a control freak and wanted to make his point to Howard, despite it being clear Howard wasn't interested. Howard's overreaction was much worse. They both acted like children and exhibited poor leadership. Look at how the players followed. Gard should get a game or two and Howard should be done for the season.

unfortunately, Witlock is often hated on for things like this. And, he was spot on in that article.

This, Had Gard not grabbed Howard nothing would have happened. Just words.

Given Howard's maturity level, this is very likely not true.

There are a whole bunch of people that are evaluating the entire confrontation out of context. Everyone really needs to watch the last minute or so of the game to form an informed opinion. Howard has absolutely NO RIGHT to be pissed at Gard about the last timeout. Gard actually has every right to be, at best, annoyed at Howard for pressing UW's scrubs with his starters.

What I think happened here at the very end was Howard wanted to give Gard a fly-by "**** you for calling that last timeout".

To think that Gard is going to let Howard just amble by with only Howard getting a word is absurd.

In that situation, every coach is going to say, "Hey Juwan, I was only calling a timeout because you were still pressing my scrubs with your starters. I'd have been glad to let the game end uneventfully..."

No coach is going to let JH slide by under those circumstances, nor should they.

It was a HANDSHAKE LINE, FFS! It's exactly where people put their hands on each other. GET A GRIP!

You're really wanting to die on this hill, aren't you?

So if you know someone and want to speak with them at a function somewhere, do you not ever gently 'hold' their arm and shake their hand. Holding is NOT grabbing.
NO, that's aggressive and the person may not like it like Howard did not
