The NCAA brackets for 1993 show Randleman (tOSU) as #1 seed, Brinzer #4, Green (MI) #5, Gibson (MN) #6, and White (PSU) #9. I assumed White was the guy Brinzer beat in the pigtails of Big-10s and he got a wildcard into NCAAs as well as a seed (but lower than the top 4 Big-10 placewinners). White got pinned in the first minute of the first round and was out of the tourney (his guy failed to advance, which was the rule back then). Brinzer took third. Randleman took first.

I couldn't find a link to the '93 Big-10 results--please share if you have.

RAY.....Just trying to check if you may have "misremembered that bout with Matt White. I kinda feel like a "fact checker on CNN" but I remember Matt having a really screwed up knee late in his career so went to the PSU archives to check Matt's career. I guess Matts's record may be "misprinted also"........please don't take this as critcism. I happened to have followed you and admit....your quirky gumby doll is the stuff of legends!

Back to the archives. It shows Matt beat you 2-1 while you were at Okie State and you beat him 11-5 (still a 6 pt difference ;-). It also shows White going 2-2 after your bout and apparently did not qualify for the NCAAs (still equals no points at the NCAAs).

Matt's career ended badly because of that knee and my wife and I cringed every time he went on the mat. I saw the match between you and Matt as just a match that fans of PA wrestling wrestling and your HS, I believe it was North Alleghany, wish hadn't happened.

Personally, I love the stuff you put on the boards and hope you come over to the PSU board as there are a large number of fans that have followed you and would love to hear from you!

PSU,
If you choose not to come over, I will look for your post when I intrude here ;-0

Have you had any contact with Matt??? Would love hear how he is doing.

Well, to begin with: thank you. If what I've said is not right, you're doing me a large favor by correcting me. "Never let the facts get in the way of a good story" is not my outlook on such things.

The 11-5 bit does sound correct; I guess I remembered the 6 points. But how could Matt go on after our bout? I'm pretty clear on the "losing in the pigtail" rule. And surely he couldn't have gone 2-2 after our bout; that would be three losses. You must mean 2-2, including our bout?

I didn't realize Matt got a wildcard to nationals, but in retrospect that's not surprising. It's also not surprising that I didn't notice; I didn't pay much attention to brackets, or to my opponents.

I will stand by the bit about (at least some) Penn State people saying nasty things about me in the stands, though: that's straight from my parents. :)

I actually don't recall losing to Matt my freshman year... but some of that year descended into a nightmarish blur of losing, and I'm not surprised. The fact that people would feed me BS about how well I was doing for a true freshman just added insult to injury.

I haven't talked to Matt since he competed for Puerto Rico in the world championships in New York City. It'd be interesting to hear what he's up to.

Thanks for the response, Ray. You have a unique, but extremely intelligent, take on wrestling. I'd think you could get a decent amount of hits on a blog if you wrote some posts like your posts on this thread. I'd be there every day.

I think Ben Askren exemplified your response. He was great at the funk, but also had counters to funk, and counters to counters. He was always trying to innovate in the scramble positions that are currently common and made it a science.

Yes, this is correct. Yet people here dump on Askren incessantly whenever his name comes up...

Ray makes compelling points about being creative in wrestling and the importance of continuing to develop techniques, and I think his philosophy on wrestling approaches art a little more than science - but I may be splitting hairs or completely wrong about that.

Funny how a few thoughts outside the typical from a respected free-thinker like Ray get such positive, even effusive responses. Maybe there is room for changing the way the sport is marketed, scored, taught, practiced ect. Right now, it's one or two bad Olympic Year shakedowns from the farther shores of oblivion.

What I have been so encouraged by is how FILA/UWW has responded. Change mat colors, updating and simplifying scoring rules (for the most part), modifying weight classes, etc. to ensure not just survival but growth of the sport. That is the kind of aggressive action and bold decision making that is needed by the governing bodies of collegiate & folkstyle wrestling here.

Lalovic has done a fantastic job internationally and I believe he will continue to lead this way to maintain wrestling's status as an Olympic sport. I wish this kind of leadership was matched domestically.

Look for a really good documentary coming out (hopefully) in February. Nancy and a couple of film guys from the wrestling community have been working on one for a few years, which will contain a lot stuff nobody's seen before: home movies, interviews with people who were there (e.g. me), competition footage released by the USOC for the project, etc....

Ray, please announce this when it is released. I would hate to miss it!

RAY,
I will try to look into what Matt is up to a let you know what I come up with. Run into Rich Lorenzo from time to time and he might be able to fill me in. FYI this is the link to Matts wrestling stats at PSU http://www.pennstatewrestlingclub.org/history/index.php?view=wrestlerstats&wrestler=42 .

Surprised to hear that Matt could wrestle for the Dominican Republic. Dual citizenship?? I told my wife about catching you here and rehashing somethings and she reminded me that Matt had both legs wrapped at the end of his PSU career (not to diminish your win over him). According to the PSU web site it appears that Matt did get to the NCAAs that year and he lost his first bout to a kid from Ohio U and that might have been the pigtail loss that eliminated him.

I was thinking about the rudeness shown to you and your family. As you might note visiting the wrestling forums, many fans seem to take wrestling and life all too seriously. I suspect the PSU fans who you refer to were either upset that you didn't end up a Nittany Lion, were parents of kids you thrashed throughout your career or just protective of Matt!

I just realized that my wife and I were at the 1993 Big Ten Tournament ( our first), but relax....my wife and I would never have booed anyone! What stood out to me was Yetts from OSU supposedly went looking for Kolat after loosing to him, Kolat vs Steiner, McIllravy getting his RS pulled and our HWT Gregg Troxell wrestling with kidney stones.....OUCH! I think we might have been more anti- Ohio State than Iowa that year. We respected Iowa and not so much Ohio State.

Sorry to say that such a high percentage of wrestling fans today were those who have followed the sport for a long....long time. I wrestled in HS just enough to get a good appreciation for it, then decided to stick to baseball and football. Been following PSU teams since the days of Clyde Frantz, Andy Matter and John Fritz. Despite playing baseball at PSU through '73, I'd much rather watch college wrestling.

Posting this for both you and Tarphawk.....link to results of 1993 Big 10s http://www.wrestlingstats.com/big10/pdf/Big 10-1993.pdf
Sorry tarp could not find the brackets either.

Hope to catch more your posts, great to recall some great times!

Went in to the Sarasota YMCA to sign up for a couple months while we're down here and I saw about 2 dozen young men with University of Iowa T-shirts on. They were working out on some free weights. Turns out it is the Hawk swimming & diving team down here for some training. They hadda get outta the cold too.

How's the driveway GG? Watched an internet video of a squirrel cleaning snow off a power line so he could get across it and thought of you.

Thanks for theBig-10 link, BDB--I wrestled 6 of those guys @ 118-126!

Can we stick ON topic, please? What I think most people want to know is if Ray or Tarp ever wrestled the Easter Bunny and how that turned out. I am sure that it was even (despite of what I may or may not have heard on the matter).

And what we really need is that video that was posted last year of EB. Which, IMHO was as funny as the frying pan comment...

The cardiologist still won't let me shovel, but three of my grandkids came over and worked on it last Thursday.

As did I, the part where Mark Schultz was giving a speech at his brothers funeral... I tear up every time.
I could listen to Mark Schultz all day long, but that was brutal watching him and his family at the end talking about his death and how it impacted them. Dave was a great man and did not deserve to go so soon.

Ok. Might be a dumb question but I don't know the answer so I'll ask it. I didn't know what thread to ask in so this seems like a good spot.

Does a loss to a redshirt count in your official record? I know that losing to DT didnt go on Sammys record, I just didn't know if losing to Kemerer would count for those guys? Or losing to Long since he's NAIA?

Alright, let's change the pace of this thread. I heard this from one of my reliable "insiders" so just wondering if true. Is it true that Tom doesn't talk to his former best friend Schwab anymore because he is the coach of an opposing team? I found it hard to believe, but plausible at the same time. True or False?

considering he sat next to Tom Ryan and seemed to be friendly with him during the Striebler/Ramos finals match in Des Moines, I find this hard to believe.

but I have absolutely no idea either way

I would say false. Unless there was a falling out, being at another school does not bother tom. Tom has good relationships with many coaches. He and John Smith are very friendly.

All I can say is SHIT, lol.

Try this, .

Brody is going to Loras this weekend in Dubuque. He is not going to be wrestling a 6th year, lol.
He feels awesome and Brands know what they are doing, I and everyone should firmly believe this.
All will be good, slow and steady. Brody is in a good place and really believes in the process he has gone through.
Here's hoping to some good wrestling here on out.

Damned......Brody better be able to wrestle this year or this has all been for not!

I just got around to watching the video. Damn I want Brody to finish on top in such a bad way. Maybe MSU hawk will spread this video to the other boards so people can see what a great guy Brody is. Get some positive national vibes from rival fan bases.

I was hoping the host would stream The Flanagan Open, or at least the finals, but it is not showing up on the schedule of events as of now. Please post if anyone finds source for coverage.

Do we know who else will be going to Dubuque this weekend along with Brody?

I trust someone will be able to post periodic updates on tourney results..

So is Grothus wrestling at the open to get matches in for qualifying and seeding purposes? The Illinois dual could be tougher than some think. Ervin is no slouch
