Brody Grothus

For the experts out there, how many automatic qualifiers do you think the BT gets at 141? Will Moss, JG, Topher and Brody have the # of matches and quality wins to earn the BT an automatic spot and can they get to gold/silver standard to have a chance to qualify for NCAAs if they don't earn an automatic spot at the BTT?

No I don't think so, but maybe Grothus can if they go by past accomplishments but he just doesn't have enough matches in at this point

Last yr the b10 was allotted 8 spots for 141 and 6 spots 2 and 3 years ago.

So according to the NCAA/coaches poll

4 Micah Jordan
5 Ashnault
9 Thorn
17 Abidin
20 Gasca
21 Gulibon (or will it be Moss?)
24 Ervin
27 Sabatello
30 Oster

so maybe about 7 or 8 spots? PSU should qualify a spot, but don't know if they can get to silver/gold status. Carton probably will have the # of matches, but not the quality wins. Brody probably won't have the # of matches to get a spot.

So I think we will likely have to win our spot at the BTT (which Brody should be able to do - and Carton potentially could). Wouldn't it be sweet to knock PSU out of a spot at the BTT and JG/Moss not have a silver/gold standard to get in.

Just some early speculation of course.

Lets shake hands and get along fellas. Tonights the night! We are all a little grumpy since it's been so long since the last home meet. Add the excitement of Brody wrestling and everyone is ready to rip some heads off!
I told you guys to calm down and have faith. Slow and steady wins in this situation. It was a great night of wrestling.

He looked good physically. First time I have seen him on video. Thought he would look a lot more gaunt.

Still a little slow with the feet and not as much horsepower or speed as he needs to beat the top guys, but it was his fourth match back and first against a good opponent. Sabatello has beaten Z Richards, Gulibon, Rodriques, Soto, was #11 seed at NCAAs last year, going 2-2. This was an excellent test for Grothus in front of the home crowd, and he passed. This is the caliber of opponent he'll need to beat to qualify for NCAAs. One step at a time.

With Carton's loss (all be it a close one) and Grothus' win, I would imagine Brody gets the nod for this Friday.
If Brody beats Thorn (who Sabatello scored two tds on and Thorn scored non in their match), Brody will solidify his spot in the lineup.
If it's close, I think you still gotta go with Brody from here on out. Either way, you gotta commit soon on a 41 starter with the Big Tens looming. Gotta get the wins under either Carton's or Brody's belts.

Does BG wrestle on Friday?
Id hope so. Brody needs a top 10 guy test to see where he is at and what to work on. Coaches have find out win or lose. IMO Carton getting the Abidin start was more or less saying we are close to going with Brody from here on out to get matches in. You want to win the 141 spot, beat Abidin right here right now. I dont think we see Carton again this season unless Brody lays some eggs.

Do you guys realize that this thread was falling down low on the page. What a bunch of slackers not keeping it at the forefront.
So, does Brody get the nod this week against the awesome Goofers (Jammer is getting to me)?

My kid wore a gopher shirt today . . . Not that it's an expression of allegiance, but maybe a nod to their significance as a wrestling icon. We live in West Michigan, and you'll not find a MSU article in the house until the administration does some things right . . . Different thread.

The "Little Hawkeye" shirt comes out On Friday.
Go Brody!

Just walked out of the house to head to work and found my rear right tire is flat. Decided to come back in the house and pour some coffee. I assume Brody will be here any moment to change the tire. I won't be surprised if he does some work to make the dent in the rear panel go away as well.

Brody has been working really hard on his conditioning to get his lungs ready. If he can blow up your tire without a pump (that would be cheating), I would assume that the job is his on Friday night.

I have to believe that BG gets the nod on Friday, solid win against Sabatello, Carton wrestled tough, but BG could have folded after that poor showing at his first tourney, but didn't, just shows that he believes in himself and his rehab. Thorn is no slouch at all, going to be tough, I'll be there to cheer BG on for the upset and to shake up the rest of Big Ten with us solving our 141 problem. Now 165 is another story....

I agree with VanHawk- BG gets the GO tomorrow! He needs to show where he's at.

Obviously, Dubuque at 1-2 is not Brody- we all know that! First time down- got it! Great win over Sabatello!
Reason he didn't wrestle Neb- time and weight management- only one day to get back down- tough!

Thorn is scrappy! As Ihawk9 eluded to, and a top 10 opponent. When BG wins- it going to throw some wrenches in the Bigs seeding! If, he were to loose- BG seed at best, would probably be 6-7th. Or, do you go with Carten at that point?

Wow.......does tomorrow nights match determine who will wrestle at 141 in Bigs? Best of luck to both Brody and Topher.

No matter the outcome-
Go Hawks

I can't see anyone except Grothus going at B1Gs. Grothus will not qualify a spot (not enough D-1 matches to qualify either RPI, 17, or winning pct, 12, i think), but neither will Carton. I think Brody will be the only one that can qualify for Bronze (if he gets top 33 in last coaches poll), and if you aren't Bronze you are not eligible for an At Large. So I don't see any way they are not going with Grothus bar injury (or a real bad down turn). As someone pointed out above, B1G probably qualifies 8 spots, which means 2-2 or better at B1Gs.

It's 8 matches required to have a Win %.

So Grothus is currently 3-3, correct? Two more possible matches could make him 5-3, which would be 62.5% which is unlikely to meet the standard for winning percentage IIRC - although I could be wrong about that also. Thought the cutoff was usually closer to 70.

Well anyway, he most likely needs to win 2 to get the coaches ranking as well and the bronze. Or does a win over the Indiana kid and a loss to somebody like Chisko get a 4-4 Grothus ranked in the coaches? Not sure.

"Bronze" Criteria is different than Gold or Standard. No sliding scale, just specific criteria...

Wrestlers who meet or exceed any two of the following criteria will be labeled
“Bronze Standard”:

●● .700 Win %
●● Top 33 RPI
●● Top 33 CR
●● .700 winning percentage against all competition
●● One win against a wrestler receiving automatic qualification via an earned position (pre-allocated)
●● Qualifying event placement one below automatic qualification
