Brody Grothus

Since were trying to keep this thread going does anyone have good intel on where Colton Clingenpeel and Sam Cook will be wrestling next year? Or if they will be? I'll ask the same question's about Chase Shiltz and Marcus Coleman in two years? Saw Coleman got pinned by Hall last week. Anyone see the match?

This is such an interesting tactic. Not that I'm in disagreement, but when was the last time they worked anyone back in at a tournament and regardless of the wrestler's performance they were going to be done after 2 matches. The only situation I can remember that would be similar in approach are when you do the minimum at the B1G Tourney just to qualify for nationals because the rest and injury is so severe...
So if a pitcher can get hurt after the first or 200th pitch, Brody can get hurt in the first match or the finals. If he's not ready then why wrestle Midlands at all?

I may not post often, but when I do, 25% of the time, I get a like every time.
Well he doesn't HAVE to, but we sure hope he does sooner rather than later.....................:D
Maybe we can just get him a waiver from the NCAA, I hear they are pretty reasonable about such things, and grant him a pass directly to the Finals that way he doesn't have to wrestle too much. On behalf of the Hawks we will take the associated points that come with making the big stage. I will have to check with Gable to confirm but my gut tells me he would have had a Major, a Tech and a Pin along the way so be sure to include the bonus as well.o_O

This will allow him to rest his shoulder for the upcoming Baseball season where the Cubs intend to draft him on their way to winning the 2016 World Series after which he will just flat out retire and take over for the beer commercials as the NEW most interesting man on the planet but he will still be able to find time to become a minister so that he can preside over Spencer Lees wedding at intermission of the next Grapple. Go Hawks
I don't mean to put a damper on anybody's spencer lee wedding hopes, but word on the street is Spencer has been single for a while now.
Never let a minor detail like not having a girlfriend put a damper on our Wedding plans to expand this thread

Was coming home from St Louis and as driving by Iowa City saw Brody running up a steep hill pulling a large wagon with Stoll in it. So I pulled off the highway to watch and wow he made it to the top. They rode it down and then Brody started going back up the hill again pulling the wagon. So he for sure will be in great shape just pray the shoulder will be fine.

I can not wait for Grothus to actually take the mat this year.

Brody was as highly ranked as #6 in the country at one point last year at 149.

In 2013-2014 he was as highly ranked as #7. I believe he also beat over the couse of the season the eventual 1st through 4th place finishers at NCAA's.

He also placed at Midlands the last two years 6th and 4th.

The guy has a serious resume and he has done everything right during his college years, stayed out of trouble, been an Academic All American, now here he is as a 5th year Senior. He wants desperately to go out on top with a National Championship (both team and individual) and he is putting in the work to make a valiant effort to accomplish that goal. It is hard not to root for him even if you aren't a Hawkeye fan. His story is better than James English's in my opinion and everyone was jumping on that bandwagon.

A Brody Grothus/James English compare and contrast might be good for a page of comments ...

English had a double major in chemical engineering and energy, business and finance. He was an academic All American and a five-time academic All Big 10 team member. He missed two full seasons due to various injuries. He returned for a sixth year even though he had already graduated and was not guaranteed a starting spot. His first post-season appearance was in his sixth year. His record heading into B1Gs that year was 8-3. Penn State would not have won the NCAA team title without his improbable All American finish.

I'm not knocking Brody Grothus in the least. He's a talented wrestler and seems like a fine young man. But in what way is his story "better than James English's"?

Has this been confirmed by Spoons, HIWILLIE, and or VALholl?

So, Casey either remembered my story or has independently figured out that my login name "Vallholl" is a misspelling of Valholl, which is the Norwegian word for Valhalla. Valhalla is Odin's Hall of the Slain.

Long ago, after lurking for years, I had some brilliant thought that I had to share and in my haste to sign up I tried "Big Norse", "Norseman", "LutherAce", "Valhalla", and "Valholl" and all were taken. So at that point, I decided to add an extra "L" to Valholl" b/c I figured, "Who is ever going to know the Norwegian spelling of the word?".

Not as good a story of how WDMHawkeye became WWDMHawkeye, however.

Because this is the Iowa board not the PSU board.

Are you really not able to understand why they don't have pitchers throw 200 pitches? Or why a pitcher coming off surgery may only throw 20 pitches the first time facing live hitters?

Stick with baseball gablefan73, because you just don't understand wrestling. Apparently you were a cheerleader. Better yet, you sound like the wife of the Cyclone wrestling coach A ba ba a da... Or could you be buf87?

You obviously need pictures to understand what anyone is talking about. I will take this post as you conceding defeat. And I won't kick you while you are down. I sometimes forget little kids can get online now.

This should get some discussion flowing. Bigger cult following: Grothus? Or Evans mustache?
My vote goes for Brody because he has a better chance than the stache at bringing home a team title.

Hey fleming, the stache doesn't have a chance at bringing home a team title this year so Brody has the better chance. Just thought I would point that out since I don't know how to draw pictures. Maybe Valhall can do it.

No pictures needed here. I get it. And it's obvious you don't. You either wrestle when you're 100% or you don't. And if you know anything about Iowa Wrestling--they aren't taking Grothus to Evanston to wrestle (2) matches, and subsequently default out. If you think that's happening YOU ARE A CHEERLEADER.

And with that I'm setting the line at 3.5 on the number of matches Grothus wrestles at Midlands. I'm taking the under.
Give me the under also, but I hope he wrestles how ever many matches it takes to win the title. I will dust off my pom poms! Brody Brody he's my man, if he can't do it no one can!

If Brody continues to win, then he stays in...one loss and he's out. Why take a chance in wrestlebacks at a preseason tourney? Also, I think Gablefan's baseball comparison is spot on in Brody's case just because there are a lot of factors (weight, injury comeback etc). Right now, it's just a matter of how he feels with the cut and wrestling a whole live match. I think they are doing it right and looking at the big picture...something they may not have done a few years ago.

IMO, if he's 100% going into the tournament and remains 100% throughout the tournament, HE WILL wrestle more than 3.5 matches. If he tweaks the prior injury or incurs something different during the tournament, I believe that the staff would PROTECT him and not wrestle him from that point forward. Several things to consider though--
1) When was the last time he wrestled competitively outside the practice environment? (Negative)
2)And 141 is probably the weakest, unproven weight class this year (Positive)
I believe that he needs to protect his legs, which equates to more wrestling from the top position, which is Grothus' bread and butter.

My inside move is on the OVER. Stay healthy and win the tournament.

I just know you are from God's Country in NE Iowa. Drank a lot with those Norwegians up there. On a serious note. Brands, I assume wants Brody to weigh in for 2 days to duplicate BIG TEN'S and Brody's quest for a NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP. My prediction is if Brody makes the finals at NYC IOWA wins NC

For those of you getting excited about the baseball comparison (and you know who you are), I was continuing the comparison from Page 4 of this thread. Keep up. We can get to 13 pages the easy way or hard way...your choice.

Does Penn State have any wrestlers that played in the Little League World Series?

Being a skinny dude from Chicago, Chi-Town SLIM used to be my gamer tag when I first got into online gaming (SOCOM). After stepping away from gaming for awhile I couldn't remember my log in information when I made a brief comeback. I was still skinny and a Bears fan so PapaBearSLIM was born.
I tweet, but don't do Facebook. I do have a Facebook page so that I can check in on what my kids are posting. Until recently (less than a month ago) I had totally ignored instagram but decided I should probably get an instagram log in for the same reason I did Facebook. Wouldn't you know it, somebody had already taken the 'papabearslim' ID. Knowing that the chances that somebody else came up with that on their own is slim to none, I felt violated and thought about reaching out to the imposter. Realizing that I will likely never post anything on instagram I decided to let them keep the name. I toyed with the idea of adding an extra character like an underscore but it made it seem like I was the imposter. Ultimately I went with 'therealpapabearslim' and immediately felt like a celebrity as soon as I made the ID. I talked about myself in the 3rd person for most of the day until my wife started getting annoyed and telling me where Larry would be sleeping.

Afraid mine is pretty boring compared to PBS...Arizona, the KC Chiefs, and Marcus Allen...who was my favorite RB. I've had this handle in one form or another since the mid 90s.

Its quite simple, i've been reading these forums since I was about a Freshman/sophomore in HS but didn't decide to start posting until I was a freshman in college. I attend school in La Crosse, commonly referred to as Lax, and I wrestled 174 while I was still competing. The hawk comes from being a hawk fan :D I'd also venture to guess that i'm probably the youngest person who posts on this forum. Could be wrong though.
