Alex Marinelli is obviously one of the most anxiously awaited recruits to come to Hawks in a while. He's got 4 X AA written all over him. I love his workman like style and brutish way about him. It's not going to be long before he is a Hawk fan favorite. That being said does it make more sense for Brands to redshirt him next year and develop him, or let him go as a true frosh. If he shirts next year then that leaves Paddock the likely starter at 165. Paddock had some problems keeping the weight down last year and struggled in limited action (he was dealing with a personal tragedy that no doubt adversely affected his season). A full-strength Paddock is in my mind a bit of an upgrade from Rhodes last year. Maybe a round of 12 guy. The bull on the other hand is a beast. I see him as a dominating force that can compete with fellow St. Paris Graham alumni Bo and Ike Jordan. I'm not saying he's a national champ as a true frosh, but I'm confident he's an AA. With the bull in the lineup our team looks like this:

125- Gillman (preseason #1)
133- Clark (preseason #1)
141- Turk (I give him the nod over Carton. I think Carton peaked two years ago. Last year he beat true freshman Turk by one point at Midlands. Turk will improve (needs to get better on bottom).
149- Sorensen (preseason #2)
157- Kemmerer (great year last year redshirting. Deep, weight class, but certainly good enough to get on the podium)
165- Marinelli
174- Meyer (returning AA)
184-Brooks (returning AA)
197-Holloway (good frosh year. lots of upside her with a weight that is still down and several AA's graduated)
Hwt- Stoll (certainly would have AA's if he hadn't gotten hurt against Gwiz at National Duals. Mid AA last year.)

I'm thinking next year we get a minimum of 7 AAs, with a good chance at 8-9.

I'm partial to redshirt midstream so wrestlers don't have to go 4 years straight. McGinness, J. Williams, and McIlravy sure benefited by taking their redshirt after freshman year. I'd like to see him on the mat.

I think ur gonna see the first true freshmen to start for brands next year. If Iowa lands Lee and he doesn't want to RS then Marinelli stays in. If Iowa lands Lee and he wants to RS or if Iowa doesn't land Lee then Marinelli RS his second year.

Alex seems like the type that will have the car packed up and ready to drive west to get in the Iowa practice room the day after graduation. I don't think he's going to be some fresh face rookie by the time November rolls around.

Its going to be fun to see what TnT can build on with a Jordan trained elite.

Well, technically Burak. I actually don't believe Brands has any issues with pulling a redshirt if that's clearly the best option. Obviously, he'd prefer to redshirt, however he really hasn't had a situation of having too many true freshman that were far and away the best solution. I think Sorensen and St John were probably the most highly considered, but Grothus had a pretty solid season going at 149 and 157 had the trio of Jansen, Kerr and Ballweg. St John would have been an upgrade over Kerr, but how much is the question Brands gets paid the big bucks for. Marinelli is probably going to be the clear cut leader for this weight class, and I predict his shirt gets pulled (after Midlands).

Send the Bull to Midlands unattached than make a decision or send him to the Scuffle if the Midlands field is weak, if that's even allowable.
Than go from there.

I would like to see the Hawks at the Scuffle next season as I think that would be a tougher tourney for the Bull.

The Hawks are one of the few teams making the Midlands still relevant. I'd like to see the Midlands add on to the NC St with maybe AZ st, V Tech, Ohio St.. If Illinois ever got their bus fixed, that'd also help the competition at Midlands.
Marinelli is THAT good. Iowa is THAT close.

what are you saving him for? 2021?
Would he be even better after a red shirt? 2021 we still need wrestlers. Tough call and no reason to burn the shirt until mids.

Paddock has potential but not at 165 in my opinion. He looked malnourished out there and on occasion got thrown around like a rag doll. I would like to see what he could do at 174.

So Gus you favor Paddock up at 174, Meyer at 184 (not a bad move) and then Brooks at 197. I think the bad move here is Brooks at 197. He doesn't look like he struggles with energy or strength at 184 and might be a little small for 197. I recall him competing at 195 (at Fargo maybe?) and doing well, but unless he's already made that decision and is putting on the good weight, he may be undersized.

brooks and burak wrestled for 3rd place at fargo in fs and Greco, they split the matches don't recall which way

With Burkes brother attending Edinboro I would think there is a chance he flips jmo.
Marinelli coming on strong is not without say.
Plus yeah Burke is a large 165r.
Go Hawks

Very sound reasoning Edquinn!!

I look at personal development over team championships. I'm not sure if Marinelli is ready for D1...meaning he would have to AA or it's a wasted movement by TnT and Marinelli

Hawks are not that close! OPEN your eyes people! 3 finalists and 2 other all Americans and finish what? Marinelli and k at 57 don't make a championship.

Nobody outside the state of Iowa knows who ☆ is. Get rid of him and Luke and bring a known commodity to the table. Only way Iowa gets back. McDonough or Ramos. Way better than ☆ and Luke. I would at least start there!

There has not been 8 AA's since at least before 2011.
8AA's would be pretty damn close.

Gilman and Clark will be champs. Sorensen Runner up. Kemerer will AA (Top 5). Marinelli will AA. Stoll will AA (Top 6). Brooks could very well be in the finals next year, or at the very least improve his AA finish to top 5. Meyer could move up to 5-7 IMO. Thats easily a title contending lineup.

What's his purpose really? Why not give that money to a wrestler that competes and still training. Is his job that essential to the program that no one else can do it? What's he done? Not being a A**, just want to know?

As soon as Marinelli lands in Iowa City, Tom Brands should walk up to him and say "Son, you are now the starting 165 lber for the University of Iowa, let's get started".

So you want to replace someone when you don't even know their role with the program? Sounds perfectly reasonable

Luke Lofthouse did, but Luke Eustice is still here. Director of Wrestling Operations.

Doubt whatshisname knows that however.
so you want Mcdonough or Ramos as director of wrestling operations instead of an assistant coaching position? I think the reason Luke Eustice is director of operations is because he has been with the program for so many years and has the experience necessary to manage schedules and organize travel and budgets for team. I'm sure Eustice can do some coaching in the wrestling room as well but his primary role is more than just coaching.
