Yeah, it could. I'm far more concerned about the state of Iowa Wrestling than I am about how many National Titles Alex Marinelli may or may not win, regardless of redshirt, or what year(s) it may occur. If he's good enough, he'll win one right out of the chute, clearly he wouldn't be the first to do it. People act like true freshmen have never had success on a DI mat before.I like your thought process. However how many guys do you know that a redshirt didn't help their progression. We need some nation champions to help build on the future. A redshirt freshman has a much bigger chance. It could mean the difference in one or multiple NC for Alex.
Keep in mind, a redshirt is available throughout his career if he chooses to use it at all. Having that in the bank isn't such a bad thing either. His redshirt and everybody else's can be used at any time in a presumable 5 year window, as far as "planning" present and future lineups.
We have a lot more known\proven commodities in our lineup RIGHT NOW, than we do in the future, regardless of potential and what we think they'll do when they arrive (and yes, that applies to Marinelli as well, but RIGHT NOW we also know we have a hole at 165 lbs that needs filled by the best person available to fill it - meet Mr. Alex Marinelli).
At least give the illusion you're willing to let top level wrestlers come in to your program and start from Day One. The last 2 Team National Champions didn't seem to have a problem with it, perhaps it's time for Iowa to get back on that bus.
