Downey just tweeted that he wants tobe a Hawkeye

Highly doubt Brands runs the Iowa room like a boot camp. He's going to allow his wrestlers to make big boy decisions. Downey clearly is not able to do that at this time. This is a waste of everyone's time, and could potentially alienate our upper weight guys.

Alienate our upperweights? How So?

Can't argue with the timeline of things, and I don't see it propelling us into contention with PSU next year either, but I'm looking to the future as well. 3 extra months in the Iowa room before transitioning into the HWC would be priceless (for him and us) IMO. It would also help in the development of Holloway if you believe he's the future. I do not.

I'm not sold. I'm basing my comments soley on the chance that there have been discussions between him and the staff, and that they would/could have a plan. That, and what previous coaches have told me in regards to him as a person and his undeniable talent.

I don't believe in Holloway being the future at 97 either. I am a strong believer in rewarding loyalty as a virtue, & I'd gladly invest energy in a loyal room guy for 3 months of reward than invest the same amount of energy into a selfish leech.

I agree with your argument. But is it worth the risk for at most, 3 months of wrestling? I think the energy spent on developing Holloway & the reps he would get would be more valuable.

My point would be moot if this happened last yr & Stoll was still healthy. Adding Downey won't propell us into competing with PSU for the championship next season.
this move is being considered for what Downey could bring to the HWC not UofI

I'm in the Downey camp because, like some have already stated, Iowa would be the place to "tame the beast". The dude just needs some proper guidance. I can't speak too much on the NE ordeal, but the ISU situation was doomed from the start. Past coaches have told me the Iowa room would be outstanding for him. For what it's worth... With that being said, one MAJOR situation that's being overlooked, is that he would need to qualify for grad school (GRE etc.) after already completeling the long list of standards stared by previous posters. Uphill battle to say the least...
Are you PDII?

Iowa is an awful place to tame the issues this guy has. It is one of the biggest party schools in the country. The temptation will be everywhere. And taking him in the first place only feeds most of his other problems. He doesn't need guidance. He needs to grow the eff up.

I suppose this is with the assumption that Cash and Holloway are going down to 184/197 respectively. I don't think either of those two would like to see Downey come in and take their spot for the second have of the season.

I imagine they'd take it better if it was someone already in the room (or warner) beating them out of the spot.

I'd prefer that he goes some place else for at least a year, if not two, and keep his nose clean, prove that he has made changes and that he is committed to doing the things the right way and earning his way into the HWC program as a sponsored wrestler vs. Iowa/HWC welcoming him in and hoping that they can assist him in turning his life around.

I know some have said that we should take him in and put him on a short leash and cut him if he screws up. "Nothing lost, no risk". I don't think at this point that he has proven that he can be put on a short leash and thrive. I'm all for second chances and love a good redemption story, but this guy has had multiple opportunities and has consistently made poor decisions and has not learned or changed anything in his lifestyle or attitude. Go somewhere else and prove me wrong. If you do, then you can come join us if you still want to.

Look, I highly doubt the Downey thing is going to happen. But Wilcke and especially Holloway haven't earned a damn thing yet. I hope they do earn the right to call 184/197 their spots by December but the work needs to be done.

A wise man once said, you get what you earn. And if they let someone come in a beat them out for the second semester then it's on them.

Ha, no kidding. I know he said a few times he'd "check my math" and offer his suggestions....which he never did. He claims/claimed he was an engineer, did he really mean a train engineer (and that may still be insulting train engineers)? Because that would have made more sense.
Sanitation engineer.

The credibility of our coaches and program take a hit if we bring him in. I'll take a hard pass. The fact that M* even liked a tweet of his makes me feel uneasy. He is one step forward and 6 steps back. If we say we do things the right way, then we should do things the right way.

THIS!!!!! X1000

Cool story, by your logic, Downey hasn't earned to opportunity to be on the team.

TnT are men of faith. If someone asked for a chance they will give it to them and make them earn it. If this happens he will be accountable for his actions and like Long will be given a one strike and ur out. I bet he will be given the KF treatment and be banned from social media.

I'm not trying to defend or say that PDIII doesn't have baggage. I want the best wrestlers at every weight. IF, and that's a BIG IF he stays clean, we'd be stupid to not have him in the room wresting with guys like Wilke, Holloway, Warner, Stoll and Warner.

Wilke and Holloway could both be room guys in 2019 after Warner and a possible Hidley get to Iowa. Not too worried if they "like" it or not. Get better and beat who's there, or by your logic, let's not recruit over them...

If he could win titles at 2 weights simultaneously (and I'm sure he thinks he can) I would not want him. There is no point in slowing down a train thats moving in the right direction, We have a huge push right now and we need to keep that going. If you had a son considering Iowa and you knew PD3 was coming would it affect the decision?

What exactly has he done that is so bad? Being serious maybe I have missed something. I have seen him wrestle and he was in shape when wrestling in Vegas and in Lincoln so it looked like he was being dedicated to wrestle so well at these two events. Where was he training to get ready for the Open and WTT?

He did at least some of his training in Stevens Point, WI, with Dennis Hall. Super guy, excellent coach, and Greco stud in his day.

Sammy Sasso is a fan of PD3.

I don't think that it is anything that is so bad. But when we have a coach that continually preaches living the life & dedicating yourself to the sport, how can you add a guy that has publically justifiedNOT living the life for the last two yrs? To me the opposing philosophies are comical.

His cardio was suspect...not going to beat a guy like Taylor without it.

He is a superb talent with a ten cent brain. I'm all for second chances but this guy is such a world class screw off. For those that say one bad apple can't infect the bunch, my answer is that it can...and does frequently. It's different when a guy is just out of high school and needs to mature and learn how to succeed. He may have not had the best home life and is a wildcard but those folks can be mentored and influenced by guys already in the program and coaches.

An older guy like Downey, who is already infamous in the sport, can let off a bomb from within. Have seen it time and again. Kemerer or Lee won't stand for it but it's not them you have to worry about...it's those aforementioned younger guys. Don't think it happens but will not root for it at all.

I wonder what Pat Duggan thinks about rooming with PD3

Well if there is one thing that Downey isn't it is fake.

Also if Taylor had college eligibility I would welcome him for a semester and hope The Brands would wipe the Cael phoney stench off him.
A WISH.
You are given the opportunity to tell David exactly what you think of him. Of course everybody knows your gonads would tighten up to point of immersion and you would babble some horsecrap about being a big fan.

You do pathetic very well.

Just for the record, this will be his 4th chance.

I would probably just tell him he needs to take some of the pressure Cael is putting on him off and have a little more fun. Although he does seem like a ticking time bomb so I would probably tread lightly.
