The GOP is not trying to “chip away at SSI”.
They AND the Dems know if steps are not taken to address the coming shortfall there will be an enormous crisis.
But the Dems see the incredible number of financial illiteracy out there (as evidenced by this thread) and in a cynical way exploit it for votes.
“Top earners” get CPA’s to figure out all their legal deductions and still pay a lot of taxes. They obviously don’t fuss too much or else Cali would be a wasteland and lower tax states like TX would be overflowing with even more millionaires than they have now.
It wasn't that long ago that privatizing was a plank on the national platform. It's definitely happening, but that doesn't mean I disagree with your point about everyone knowing reform is in order.

That wasn't my point. I'm not all that concerned with how rich people are doing their taxes or where they reside and am more interested in understanding why many that probably aren't rich seem to prefer their moral stance on taxation of the rich over the health of the program and the potential wide-ranging effects that it becoming insolvent may bring about.
Only the middle class holds enough wealth to pay for all of this. That’s why they will ultimately be the target of tax increases.

I’m not rich but I am on SSI. I just wish I was rich. And I don’t envy those who are.
If they “collect” taxes but don’t pay any I’d call that socialism. When tax laws are written by corporations, they’ll be the ones keeping the taxes.

I think only the middle class has enough income to tax.
The ultra wealthy have lots of money but no way to tax it. Unless somebody can dream up a wealth tax. I do think a federal property tax on homes, yachts, and planes over a certain value would be possible and help a lot.

You think the ultra rich report a lot of income? I think that’s left to the working stiffs.
I don’t think many of the people on those $30+ million dollar yachts in Florida are “working”.
No for instance you can offset regular income with capital losses. Unless they changed the rules.
Teaching and coaching kids is a much higher ceiling than mooching off your mom from her basement.

I have said why I voted for Trump and I stand by it. I have no reason to lie. I don’t need to justify it. And I’m not being untruthful in saying I won’t vote for him this time.
Also, I have tried to be respectful of your posts and aside from my positions on education, the current atmosphere in schools, and support for teachers who in overwhelming numbers who get up every day and try their best to do a good job, I support them in general. Having taught myself, I’ve seen what they deal with firsthand.
Bottom line and take it for what it’s worth:
You tend to be highly emotional and angry most of the time. Your posts have an element of someone who walks through a room yelling at people and making statements that tend to be shallow, very one sided, and lacking depth. I almost feel sympathy for you because I suspect you have high levels of frustration and burnout.

Your last paragraph is hilarious. I know what I am passionate about. I know when I am being an asshole to somebody on here. Education and America matter to me so when Democracy is being attacked by halfwits, I tend to be a little pissed. When ignorance comes at education, weekly, I'm going to defend it. My life is great. I still love teaching and coaching. I have a great family. I just don't suffer anti-American fools. But again, you don't have self awareness of yourself, so of course your thoughts on me would be inaccurate.
The GOP really wants to eliminate social security and Medicare. All you have to do is listen, they are saying what they plan to do. Some like to call them "entitlements." Just another good sign that the GOP doesn't care about people and are not fit to hold office.
And what happens then? All of these people then go on to the welfare rolls?
