I-40 is closed from the TN line through all of western NC and will be for a while. I-26 south of Asheville is also closed. Landslide took out part of I-40 and the road collapsed near the TN line. There is currently no way to get to Asheville except by air unless there's some minor back road.

The death toll will likely never be known...there are lots of tiny communities tucked away up there that might be completely gone.
We’ve been through that area twice the last couple of years so this is nuts to me. I feel horrible for the residents.

I spent a lot of time up there in my youth. My alma mater, WCU, is completely cut off. Students can't leave and parents can't get there. Classes are suspended through next week but who knows when there'll be access.
I saw that. I sincerely hope the folks there are okay. Someone said that the issue that is so sad is that who in the mountains thought they’d need to evacuate due to a gulf hurricane?

Before I say this, let me emphasize that I am not blaming anyone affected by the storm. Nor do I feel any ghoulish satisfaction at the hardships afflicting people with different political views.
Now that that's out of the way... mountain communities have unique risks. The same topology that makes for beautiful scenery also experiences avalanches and alluvial flash flooding. A huge tropical system can dump massive amounts of rain even hundreds of miles inland.
