*****Iowa vs Seton Hall Game Thread*****

Krikke had 1 rebound. Your center has to get more than 1 rebound. Patrick had 5.

PMAC had 3 rebound yesterday, so 6 today puts him for the tournament at a little above his season average if 3.2. Sandfort had 8 rebounds.

I agree Krikke needs to rebound better but he was also 8/10 from the field and while a defensive/rebounding liability seems to be a much more consistent offensive p;layer than PMAC. Freeman looks great and deserves more minutes, but I think we can pencil in PMAC as a starter all season unless he tells his Dad he doesn't want to start.

Dix is the better player. Yout get more size on switching and a better outside shot and better rebounding.

Harding looked good vs cupcakes but he really struggled today vs big guards. Bowen takes care of the ball
but he's a lot more like Aaron Ulis than I had hoped.
Bowen has far more offensive game than ulis, fran just handcuffs him like he did with joeT. Fran is far more worried about his pg’s turnovers than he is about letting them create offense. Frans offense just isn’t built for pg’s, it’s all about the forwards.
Dix is a really good player and can play the pg position, but he isn’t a pg just like perkins isn’t a pg

PMac hasn’t been playing that many minutes this year and he’s actually been pretty efficient offensively. If you’re going to call him out for bad rebounding, which he often deserves, you should also call everyone else out and note when he has a good night.

I’ll add that Krikke’s defense was also atrocious today. I love his offense, but he got abused last night and again today and needs to do better.

Dix is the best perimeter defender of the guards. If he would just get more minutes and given free reign like Sandfort I would bet his offensive game would just get better and better. Payton needs to start focusing on rotating and better defensive positioning as much as he does chucking up 3's from everywhere.

That is on Fran he cannot let Payton have free reign after he hits a couple

Interesting that Dix was in for most of the second half instead of Bowen
IMO, Dix is the most consistent and most well rounded guard on the team and has been since the middle of last year. He's by far the best shooter of the 4 and is probably the most consistent defender in the group as well. If he's not going to start then I'd like to see him be the first guy off the bench and getting closer to 20mpg taking some minutes from either Bowen, Pmac, or Perkins.

My bet is that he won't. He's not athletic enough to play that way on offense and guard P5 post players...

Fran is always going to give his shooters free reign.......
Not being sarcastic but just who are Fran's shooters? I haven't seen a great 3 pt. shooter on the Hawks yet although the season is still early. I mean Krikke has a very good mid-range jumper but he has his limitations in all around skills. Imagine not getting Krikke from the portal.

Said from the beginning that Krikke is a scorer, BUT he's not a good rebounder or defender. We'll see a lot of the same in conference games. Wait a couple of games until we get Purdue to start conference play.....
I thought in the last 10 minutes Krikke did a good job of getting his body on their big for a box out and letting Payton/Patrick/Tony crash and come for the actual board. The team as a whole needs to be better on the defensive glass, but sometimes individual numbers can be a bit deceptive. As long as Krikke is sealing off his man to allow others to go and make a play, he is doing his part down there--he just needs to be a lot more consistent with this.

And yeah, every team is going to struggle to contain Edey on the offensive glass. That isn't a uniquely Iowa problem--he had 19 offensive boards in 3 games in Maui all against top-10 teams.

I think Freeman is clearly the best interior defender. I’d play krikke next to him, I think that would help mask his defensive deficiencies.

I was at the games. It was a fun, well run event. Nice venue. Beautiful campus. Quite a few hawk fans. Outnumbered only by USC fans but that is understandable. I hope Iowa makes it back there sometime in the future.

Sandfort started last year pretty much the same way. He was in a horrible shooting slump to start the year and then caught fire. Hopefully that same pattern will arise this year.

Dix is by far the best 3 point shooter of all the guards. He shot 40% last year and he's shooting 66% in limited attempts this year. He's not an aggressive scorer, but he's very efficient. Perk and Bowen are both very inconsistent shooters.

The issue is that most 4s that Iowa will face from here on out would absolutely cook Krikke off the dribble--it's kind of the catch 22 that you sign up for when you bring in a guy like Krikke. He's too small to guard bigs effectively and too slow to guard 4s effectively--the reality is that he's a poor defender.

And on the offensive end, teams will start packing the paint against those 2 if they play for long stretches of time--we already have some spacing issues with guys playing off of Bowen and Perkins. Just watch some of Indiana's issues with them playing 2 bigs--they have crap spacing on offense with teams packing the paint and defensively they are giving up a lot on the perimeter with MgBako and Reneau guarding smaller guys.

I think we will see more of the 2 big lineup, but I personally like it being used in smaller spurts off the bench.

Very valid points. You’d definitely need shooters at the 1, 2 and 3. I’d probably go with a 3 guard lineup and bring in Dix.

From what I’ve seen, Krikke has more trouble with really physical posts. I also think he is terrible at hedging and gets burned for too many easy back door buckets. He seems okay at perimeter defense on bigger guys. He certainly has shown that he can drive to the basket and score a variety of ways, which I think makes him a natural 4.

Freeman is the guy you want at the back of the defense. He’s mobile, physical and can block shots. Plays great position. He makes everyone’s defense better. Kind of like Woodbury in that respect.

It's an unfortunate broken record with Fran's teams.
Defensive deficiencies at multiple positions on the court at any given time and poor team connection on D.
