Next Year

PSU will return about 80 points without rby and about 105 with him plus any points the other guys might score not in the finals this year. Probably add at 10 to 15. Beard would have scored half as much as Dean this year but they still win. We return about 55 points with Spencer included but that's one finalist short of doing much. We have very little shot without RBY and none with him. 1st place is a lock for PSU until their 174 through 285 lineup is done barring an injury outbreak.
Don't sleep on Penn st possible 3 freshman at 149, 157, and 165. Van Ness, hains, and facundo all are top recruits and Dean may come back, he is only a Jr. Also beard is no slouch he beat Buchanan last year for 7th place.

Any way you slice it, Cael is proving to be 5X the coach vs Tom. Really no argument at this point and I am a huge Iowa homer. I hate Penn State but the results speak for themselves. Better recruiter, better coach, better at developing and better at getting his guys ready for March. The confidence and mental strength PSU guys have in crunch time (Semi and Finals) is remarkable.

After being in Detroit for three days, I couldn’t tell you what the Iowa style is anymore. Disgusted watching half of our line-up. The healthy guys were the ones doing nothing offensively outside of DeSanto.

A couple really interesting years coming up for Tom and Co. If Henson, Brands, Assad and Kennedy don’t produce, we are 4th or worse in our own conference. My hope is we use/at least consider using the portal for 33/57/74/84…Jaydin/Lugo/DeSanto turned out to be excellent additions.

This won’t be a popular post and I understand we are coming off a national title but we aren’t set-up to reload right now which is the standard. We shouldn’t be rebuilding again like we did from 2012-2015 ish.

I love Tom Brands but I have to agree with this post. I feel sick this morning after watching a 3 hour recruiting pitch for psu last night and feeling like we are not closing the gap. I thought we had closed the gap in recruiting but don't see it now, and no arguing they are better in March without a doubt.

Might not be popular but you spoke some real truths there. If Tom Ryan figures it out, OSU is going to be a monster also. It's easy to be great with consistently recruited top 10 athletes but the mentality side of things is obvious!

The only part I somewhat disagree with is that Penn State's development is anything special. Most of their scoring comes in as elite studs - and these wrestlers basically complete for national championships as true freshmen. We don't see a lot of wrestlers come into PSU as low all-Americans or not placing their freshman year ever turn into anything special/develop. The way PSU wins is clear - they get the best of the best, most athletic/elite wrestlers every year - they have a clear advantage in recruiting. I don't care what the recruiting services say - PSU identifies and recruits the most elite wrestlers and gets them a great percentage of the time. How many other schools have had true freshmen compete for titles in the past decade-plus? It feels like PSU has had as many as all other schools combined.

The tournament rewards teams with elite wrestlers - not the most balanced team like a dual team championship would. In the current point structure and format, a team with 4-5 finalists will be in the position to win the tournament almost every year - even if the other 5 aren't contributing a lot of scoring. The best way to win the championship under the current rules is not recruiting a very good team of 10 good/great wrestlers - it's about recruiting half of a team of elite wrestlers.

like your optimism but then there is reality.
What do you think I’m saying? Facundo, Starocci, Brooks, Dean and Kerk are realistically capable of scoring 100. Their 125-157 have some question marks. Not a lot of proven points there, but they realistically will not need to score that many between them to secure the title.

Without the injuries that happened this year we would have likely scored just about 130. We were damn near missing 50+ points.

Lee would be good for 23+ points (Drake got .5)
Eierman would have had 20 more than he did.
Kemerer another 6.
Cassioppi 5 more at least.
A healthy Eierman and Kemerer would have had high chances to beat Lee and Starocci and lowered their points. It would have come down to Saturday night.
