***Official IOWA vs michigan state Game Thread***

Anyone else feel like this win didn't really feel like an upset? Don't have a problem with the court storm but it did surprise me. Felt like a game we were supposed to win. I guess Vegas knew better than me.

Nope, Iowa was favored from the opening line. It closed -3 right before the tip.

They are freaking kids! If they want to storm the court after beating the number one team in the country, power to them.
Who gives a shit.

Has got to be a special moment for Clemons as a senior. Finally getting the satisfaction of beating the Spartans where he hangs out in the summer.... Saw him giving a hug there with a Spartan on their way out there...

I guess the rule now is if an undefeated team is in the mix when Iowa plays Michigan State then the undefeated team will lose.

Congrats fellow Spartan Hawk!

Regardless of Valentine being out, we beat a #1 team for the first time since 1999. That's why the floor-storming

Nice for the guys to close one out. You can tell they learned from the ISU bed wetting. May turn out to have been a positive. Also...If you don't love Baer....you don't love college basketball

Vegas didn't know we were going to smack MSU around all game tho!

Seemed like a casual walk onto the court and congratulate the team...more than a "do you believe in miracles!" Storming of the court

Great to see Mike exorcise some demons. Time for some fans to give him some love. We did this with Uthoff having maybe his worst offensive game of the year.

children, please stop this incessant bickering about the students celebrating with the team. didn't appear to bother the players or coaches, they were high-5'ing each other.

if anyone thinks it is lame, then next time you actually go to a game, stay in your seat or just leave and not soak in any of the post game victory over #1.

Boom!

Were the current Hawkeyes born the last time we beat a number 1? Ok, I really know the answer but it doesn't happen every decade at Iowa so a court storm felt great.

We were the better team tonight, much the better team. The two short officials, not the tall bald guy who was pretty straight up tonight, were in it with Izzo from buzzer to buzzer.

Hale The Bulldog, Iowa's secret weapon:

Nicholas Baer, F 21 4-7 1-3 2-2 2 3 5 1 1 2 0 2 11

Playing time at that number 3 spot is starting to look harder to find cuz Jok is starting next season, and Uhl. At the current rate the Bulldog is going to be a third starter.

Credit to Mikey G, the bellwether. When he's good Hawks win; when he's not Hawks lose. Destroyed the MSU guards tonight. Had Sparty so intimidated they were scoring for him.

Being at the game, I actually felt like Iowa did not play great ball game and MSU played a very poor game. Izzo was searching for some combination that might work. Schilling and Forbes were non factors and #20 did not look big ten ready as he had no offense and mike schooled him. I thought our rebounding was very poor especially on MSU free throws. They got several rebounds off their missed free throws and several other times that we did not get clean block but got the loose ball fortunately. Also, our interior defense was weak IMO. I bet you see MSU work a lot harder to get ball to lane in game there. But Iowa did play hard, kept MSU from getting their offense set up or getting any runs and the got most of the loose balls and lucky bounces (Uhl three point bank shot that was off by two feet or tip in off in bounds play)

I also don't think Iowa played that well, but then that stat with second half shooting percentage (not FTs though) was indicative of a team that shot well, if nothing else.

That might be the difference this year... Not sure that this team is overall as talented as last years, but we are definitely a better shooting team.

I think both teams were playing tough defense, and that had a lot to do with why neither team appeared to be playing that well. MSU is a different team with Valentine, who leads them in scoring, rebounding, and assists. Hawks still need to do a much better job of boxing out on the defensive board, but the defense was really good otherwise.

Sorry if I didn't give you a like and you posted in the game thread. Hard to keep up with all the posts! That said....

GO HAWKS!

when's the last time a #1 was a dog to an unranked team?
Shows you that rankings are a popularity contest to a certain point. The oddsmakers know their advanced stats well. Had I seen the hawks favored by 2-3 in Vegas, I would have bet the Hawks heavy.

I think Uconn was a heavy favorite in that game.

Though I'll bet that some factored in a bit of "revenge" factor for the previous year Tom Davis losing his final game as coach in the Sweet 16 against UConn in the tournament then, which was probably a factor in to them being matched up in that game for Alford starting out at Iowa.
