*****Rhode Island vs Iowa Game Thread*****

F-ing gross game, my dreams took a step backwards😭

On a positive note, because I am an optimist… We got out played for the most part and we were missing our best or second best player. Who also just happens to be our point guard. So by proxy is probably our most important player.

And although that third-quarter was quite an anomaly, our defense was good enough!

And although Guyton is still sloppy with the ball, she proved she can play defense at this level and she actually looked pretty good!

Affolter and Feuerbach and McCabe need to step up. They are supposed to be the leaders coming back. This team can't have vets playing like freshman to go along with the freshman. Ball security and shot selection have been bad and shooting in general has been bad. Minus Olsen they looked really lost.

O'Grady looked really good in the half I saw. I view this game as a good thing honestly. These girls will benefit from being on the brink against a scrappy team. We obviously need Lucy in the lineup but our girls persevered and that's just what you have to do sometimes.

Yes, we really do need Affolter to play better. Hopefully by the start of conference play at least, she'll be the player we saw last year again.

I’m serious if we don’t have Olsen playing tomorrow… BYU will be a struggle

The team lost its best player the day of the game. Our backup PG situation was already limited due to Guyton playing one minute prior to this game. Considering the circumstances, a win is a good outcome.

They survived and advanced. Hopefully they can beat BYU tomorrow.

Heiden had a nice score on a pass from Guyton and 2 big fts.. footwork a little awkward.. could use a dribble(or less steps) seems like she’s been called for a travel, looked like she has travel, or thrown up a shot from a weird angle a lot.

Team was exposed without Olsen, made all the mistakes you would expect from freshmen. They were lucky to win.

There's a big problem with nobody in the backcourt taking the ball to the hoop, (besides Feuerbach with mixed results). Lanes to the hoop with a step on the defender and nearly every guard tried to pass the ball at the feet or stop their progress entirely. They need to go to the hoop with speed and finish, if only to be a threat for that, because right now they are making themselves too easy to defend.

Most disappointed with Affolter's progress, I guess, and perhaps the knee issue is going to take a lot of time. With Olsen out they really-really need the Syd from last March on the court. Hope it comes back for her because she was legit great in the tournament run last year.

Conversely on defense, this is exactly how they were getting beat to the basket. Rhode Island didn't have All-Americans doing that. It's a concern.

It's interesting to see Guyton with the minutes, and you can see the potential there, but she's really not ready yet. Just experience mistakes, and they add up. Nice to see her hit the 3s.

McCabe with another 2 bucket. Keep doing that. Keep doing that. It's key to getting the defender to give her more space to shoot.

And I suppose the press break had to happen at some point, so glad they have practice time next week to deal with it. Seemed like sometimes they didn't know what they were doing, and sometimes they had it together. Teams are going to do it every game until Lucy gets back and hopefully runs the show with some experience.

And Lucy is definitely the essential player on this team. Obvious now that she makes everything go, function as designed. With stitches and bruising she could lose out a week (or two even). Not good at all.

Leaders need to step up.

Iowa looked... terrible? Can't get open looks, trouble shooting, trouble just about everywhere. Definitely their worst half of the season. Olsen more important than anyone realized?

Re-evaluating expectations. Ugg.

Stuelke better start looking for contact, and Affolter needs to ramp up her aggression because they sre in trouble if this continues in the second half.
Who thought Olsen wasn't really important? Have been saying since the season started we were going to struggle against zones because NO one on this team has been consistent shooting from three. If this continues, and McCabe/Kylie, Syd and Mallegni don't find the range we're going to struggle against good teams, especially if they pack the lane...
