I did have an injury just like that before and it was a high ankle sprain, possible bone crack/break across the top of the foot. He short stepped to avoid the opponent and stepped on the tip of the opponent's foot, it sucks too because when you are doing that short step at speed you are putting more momentum and stress on that foot than normal.
