Tea leaves say Teske to PSU

Teske is nowhere close to the best Recruit Iowa has had in a decade. He's the 2nd best this year behind Thomsen. Happel, Stroker, M Thomsen, Sorensen, Etc ALL better recruits then Teske. Also we will never know how good of a recruit Teske will be because there is no way he starts 4 years at PSU with the guys they have coming in and Carl's history of recruiting over guys.

How in the hell did you forget to mention Cory Clark? lol

If you are planning on looking at five houses that you are interested in does that mean after you look at the first or second house you have to make a decision to make an offer or you no longer have that option? Since I have a realtor in my family don’t think that’s how it works. You look at and apraise all your options then make a decision. Your telling us a 17-18 year old boy doesn’t deserve that right?
I'm simply telling you that the seller (coach) of the 2nd home has the right to ask you to make an immediate decision on his offer before you visit the next house. The buyer (wrestler and family) has the right to say NO and walk away. There are no guns being pointed at anyone, so whose rights are being taken away?

Edit to add that if the tactic had a negative ROI, no one would do it. No one does anything that hurts their long term value. You may not like the imagery of ultimatums, but coaches are hired for results and nothing else. The "we are here to develop fine young men and women" is just an image to take away the thought of how the sausage is made. Now for many coaches, they also want and do develop fine young men, but the paycheck depends on winning.

I would think that if Teske has been declining to visit Iowa it would be a sign to Iowa not to save him a spot and move forward with that money elsewhere. I say that with the caveat that I don't know if that is true or not but it is what was posted.

Is Teske really the best instate recruit in the last decade? If so that really make it clear where the state of Iowa high school wrestling stands nationally. That's not a slight on Teske as I do like him a lot but Pennsylvania and Ohio seem to have multiple top 10 recruits every year. Pretty big difference to have our best recruit in the last decade ranked in the mid to upper 20s.

How are people forgetting about Cory Clark?

I’m simply saying, have you ever bought or tried to buy a house where the owner or the selling realtor said if you don’t make an offer now and decide to look at other houses we will no longer be willing to let you buy ours. Again your analagy is ridiculous.

Agree lots of coaches do it way more then people would think.Imagine PapaBear has some stories about his sons recruiting process as well as other OPRF kids.
Just 2 examples:

One staff said, "We have offers out to you and these 3 others around the same weight... We are taking the first 2 to commit."

Another coach offered and made sure that we knew that it was there until we made a decision. No deadline though he did ask if the kid was ready to commit what seemed like every 5 minutes.

I had no problem with either approach.

Now the seller may choose to set a deadline or take another's offer but no seller has any business telling a buyer to make a decision before visiting another house as any interest/planned visits to another house by the buyer is not the seller's business.

That's ridiculous. The seller and the buyer have every right to make any demands they choose, just as the seller and the buyer have every right to spurn said demands.

The proper response from a recruit or his parent is, "Thanks, but we're committed to the process of finding the right fit for the next five years, and we intend to take all of our visits and weigh all of our options before making a decision. That means we won't accept an offer from someone else either until we've done our due diligence on all our options. Let's talk again when we've completed that process. If that doesn't work for you, please tell us now so we can focus on other options."
Must be a darn good offer to keep recruits from doing exactly this.

bb is right that it is not a perfect analogy, and you are also right that the seller has every right to make any demand they want including telling the buyer they can't look at another house.

The problem with the analogy is that the house seller usually really wants to sell their house, and don't have a lot of competing offers. So, while they could make such a demand it would probably never happen.

Cael has the same right to make these kinds of demands. The difference is that he has the power, and flexibility to do so. He doesn't need Teske that much. Next year he'll be returning 4 national champions and likely the NCAA team champion for the 7th year out of the last 8. He only needs Teske for a stop gap 1 year until he gets a bigger fish like McHenry.

You are right. The seller has every right to say "make an offer on my house before you look at another or I won't sell it to you."
Problem is they say that about as much as "hop on one foot and pat your head before buying my house."
And both are equally ridiculous.

Nolf is the one that got away. Really wanted to be a Hawk, parents wanted him to stay home. We got out bid...came down to schollie money. Heavy interest with Zain, Suriano. Suriano was a week away from being in Iowa City. Cael made his famous midnight visit and that was that.
Well bleep.

You guys have the house thing backwards IMHO.

The recruit is the house and Cael is the buyer. He says, I will make this offer and you have until midnight (or whenever) to accept. If you have other people look at the house, I am not buying.

We just sold a house a few years ago and the buyer made an offer. We counter offered and they just walked away and bought another house. I guess they made a Cael offer. Take it or leave it, but they did not tell us that.

This is textbook negotiating. Buying a house is something most people understand and is a decent example. The coach and or recruit can be the House or buyer. Whoever cares the least and or has the most to offer is in a position to pull this type of tactic. I doubt he tried this with Mark Hall.

There is nothing wrong with it by the book but not really a way I would want my kid treated by a guy who is going to be taking care of him the next 4-10 years

I can't support any coach that treats choosing a college like buying a used car. To make the best choice, high school wrestlers should explore ALL their options before committing to a college. Any coach who wants to short-circuit that process shouldn't be coaching. All wrestlers should say NO and walk away.

I think it would be sweet if Teske signs with Iowa on signing day, just to stick the dagger in the heart of Cael and leave him with nothing on signing day.

PSU told him if he visited Iowa his offer was no longer valid. He could still visit ISU.
I had to read most of the thread to find out the source of this "white lie", but here it is...and somehow it has become the truth without a stitch of proof. Truly amazing.

And just what type of proof would convince you?

I wouldn’t say it’s the exact model to a tee but being a historian to the best of my ability I’d say they’re both very similar
It isn't exactly the same, but neither is today's wrestling environment.
It is the Gable model made to fit today. If any of these guys knew Gable they could ask him.

Not being the “historian” or the all so knowing ”nitlion6”, i can tell you both that it IS NOT the Gable model! Since only one of us has first hand experience and knowledge of the time guess i have facts and you both have your opinions.
You do not know diddly.

So half of your board feels that Suriano's dad is the reason he left Penn State, but it is unreasonable for this same situation to happen in your favor? You have absolutely no inside information on the matter, but you're positive it's incorrect. Could this be because you're a Penn State fan?
My guess is his information is as accurate as yours.

Know a whole heck of a lot more about what was happening within the hawkeye program and Gable’s techniques and philosophy than you could ever begin to. I was there, were you? Still can’t understand your fixation with Iowa’s board. Don’t you have any friends on your own? Don’t they like you there. I wouldn’t know since I have never had the desire to visit your board and never will.

How about any? Yes, any would do for now.

Can I make an inference of proof? Our media seemingly does it everyday.

Explain why Teske dropped his visit to UI but not ISU at the last minute. I think the white lie is a plausible explanation for this occurrence until we have evidence to the contrary.

i wouldn't buy a house from carl . . or a car . . . or a life insurance policy

Gable had 3-4 less top 10 pfp in his starting lineups . . . Gable didn't have the money to lock up his assistant coaches for decades . . . Gable told Alan Fried he wasn't interested after he brought in Tom Brands . . . Cary Kolat would have crawled to Iowa City but we passed . . . Gable turned Jordan Conaway and James English level wrestlers into national champs

Go ahead and celebrate, but don't drag Gable down to the Calipari/Saban/Sanderson level.
