USA Today: Caitlin will not be selected for Olympic Women's Basketball Team

DT came off the bench for the first time yesterday but still played 15 minutes. Hit her 2nd basket of the tournament to being her total up to 5 points in about 50 minutes of court time.

Gray got her 3rd point of these Olympics too and is now up to 22 assists total in four games.

Team USA was cruising until they took their foot off the gas in the 4th and only won by 14. They’ve now won their games by 26, 13, 19, and 14 points. With the Belgium game being the only one with a precarious lead heading into the 4th quarter, a game that DT and Gray played a combined 23 minutes and showed their veteran skills while together putting up zero points, three assists, one rebound, and one steal to ensure the victory.

The experience, leadership, and abilities these athletes bring to Team USA should be astounding to a young athlete like Clark who just pales in comparison to those stars.
Another game today and another donut in the points column for DT. But she at least contributed a rebound to go with a turnover and two fouls.

Now shooting 16.6% from the field and 11.1% from 3pt in the 2024 Olympics leading to her 1 pt/g scoring average. On track to put up more fouls(8) than points(5), rebounds(4), or assists(6) with one game to go. What a nightmare matchup for the rest of the world to go against. The numbers from her entire tournament to this point would be considered a pretty horrible single game for Clark.

The US does not look good right now at all against France.
If the US Women were to lose this game, a promoter’s dream would be to set up a game against the French Women’s Team and the WNBA All Stars that defeated the Olympic team. It would break all ratings records and they could pay each player and Cheryl Miller $100K+.

Only having one point guard is killing them right now. it will be interesting to see how this last 92 secs go.

neither did Jason Tatum in a game or Joel Embid in another I believe. That alone doesn't make them unworthy of being on the team.
Tarausi’s total stats through all games were pathetic. My mom could have been selected in Tarausi’s place, never got a minute of PT, and the team would have performed better. Addition by subtraction.

She was unworthy, IMO, and only selected to ensure she got a Gold medal record. And Caitlin was left off to ensure she never breaks Tarausi’s fake record.

Even if CC had been selected, it's highly doubtful that she would play until she was in her 40s. She will be too busy counting all of her money and raising future Hawkeyes.

so very clear; interesting to hear the bigots and racists try and defend this.
IT was closer than it should have been. Coaching was lousy

I agree Caitlin certainly could have been on this team. Don’t agree with your reason why. Team USA certainly favored experience over promise in the player selections. There were no WNBA rookies in the team, and I believe no one under 25.

Tarausi was a starter on this Olympic Team, until the gold medal game
Her Per Game 2024 Olympic Stats
Points: 0.7
Rebounds 1.0
Assists: 0.7
Turnovers: 0.3
FG %: 16.7%
Steals: 0.00
Blocks: 0.00
Free Throw%: 0.00
3 PT%: 0.00

She was such a non factor the coach didn’t start her or let her play one second of the gold medal game. Complete waste of a roster spot. What other team would start their worst player, just because? Or take a player to fill a “symbolic role”. Women almost got beat today because she could not be relied upon. Best players should have been on the team, not the oldest.

stupid reason. As Tarusai showed experience is not everything
just another excuse; I was waiting for them to come

FWIW, DT did not start in the quarterfinals, the semi-final or the final. Don’t disagree with your view that DT did not belong.

“Coach Cheryl Reeve moved Young into the starting lineup in place of veteran Diana Taurasi against Nigeria, a team known for playing high-pressure full-court defense that challenges opposing guards.”

Go back and check out the bench during the game. DT put in a great 40 minutes of manspreading at the end of the bench and scratching her head or biting her nails. Can barely be bothered to do more than clap lightly for her teammates.Real veteran leadership there.

She was mentally gone once when she realized she wasn’t playing. Only player on the team to not play a minute in the gold medal game. She should be embarrassed.

I think Clark and Reese should have been on the team. Another coach would not have hurt either.
Soccer left off Alex Morgan and she was probably more deserving in her sport than DT. They made the decision to go younger and it paid off. As far as Clark winning 6 gold medals, I doubt the US will win another 50 straight games. Once China gets their huge 17 yr. old, 7'3" center on the court, they may be difficult to beat.

Unfortunately for Tarausi, she will be remembered as the player who should have never been on the Olympic team that cost Caitlin Clark a spot. I’m guessing she was hoping to be remembered for being the only player to play on 6 gold medal teams? While she will be, it’s not going to be in the light she likely envisioned.

With that said, congrats to USA B Team on winning gold. Just shows how dominant the US is in women’s basketball when our B Team can win gold in the Olympics.

Yep. I said that earlier that the only reason DT was on the team was propaganda to prop her up later as the only six time gold medal winner. Pfff...
