USA Today: Caitlin will not be selected for Olympic Women's Basketball Team

What the bloody hell. Women's basketball continues to cut off its nose to spite its face. Incredibly dumb decision on so many levels. NOW is the time to capitalize on her popularity; the entire world would have tuned in to watch her play.

Was hoping she would be on the team - but she certainly needs some time off.

For the better IMO. I honestly don't think CC is probably going to be torn up about this. She's been running ragged since the start of last year's WBB season. It sucks that now Team USA will get a fraction of the attention and viewership it would've gotten with CC on the roster, but honestly I think it's a good thing. She'll be there in 2028.

What happened to the 3 on 3 team that Van Lith and some others made the roster of? Couldn't / shouldn't clark be named to that team? What's the purpose of the 3 on 3 team in the first place? I apologize if this has been discussed previously.

Let's see if I've got this right, the one player who this year has received, BY FAR, the most defensive attention and defensive pressure of ANY player in the WNBA due to her devastating talent is being left off the USA Olympic roster. That attention shows who teams' fear. She's already elevate that league to heights it's never seen before. Who are the jealous, stupid morons involve in this, they need to be called to the mat.

The story that was just posted on USA Today's website:

Caitlin Clark snubbed by USA Basketball. Fever star left off Olympic team for Paris

Caitlin Clark, the most popular women’s basketball player in the nation, if not the world, has been left off the 2024 U.S. Olympic women’s basketball roster, three people with knowledge of the situation told USA TODAY Sports Saturday morning.

This confirms USA TODAY Sports’ overnight reporting that Clark — whose thrilling logo 3’s and pinpoint passes have electrified record crowds and TV audiences while earning her WNBA rookie of the month honors and numerous rookie statistical records — has been snubbed by USA Basketball.

USA Basketball, the U.S. Olympic & Paralympic Committee and Clark could not immediately be reached for comment Saturday morning.

Two other sources, both long-time U.S. basketball veterans with decades of experience in the women’s game, told USA TODAY Sports Friday that concern over how Clark’s millions of fans would react to what would likely be limited playing time on a stacked roster was a factor in the decision making. If true, that would be an extraordinary admission of the tension that this multi-million-dollar sensation, who signs autographs for dozens of children before and after every game, has caused for the old guard of women’s basketball. The two people spoke on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the matter.

The U.S. women’s Olympic basketball team is the most dominant and successful team in the world, having last lost a game in 1992. But for all of their victories and medals, the U.S. players are often largely ignored by the sports media at the Olympic Games. The gymnasts and swimmers and runners and of course the U.S. women’s soccer team get so much more attention. It’s a crowded couple of weeks with dozens of medals being handed out every day, so the competition for headlines is always intense.

Even at the women’s gold-medal basketball games at the Olympics, the press tribune is almost always half-empty, if not worse. Clark of course would have changed all that, igniting interest not just among U.S. media but reporters around the world.

Clark, 22, has become the human gateway to women’s hoops for hundreds of thousands, likely even millions, of girls and boys, women and men. USA Basketball certainly could have tapped into her enormous reach to help promote not only its 2024 Olympic team but the women’s game in general. Selecting Clark also would have honored the popularity of the college game — and it has been done before, with collegians like Christian Laettner, Rebecca Lobo, Diana Taurasi and Breanna Stewart making U.S. Olympic teams over the years.

The timing of USA Basketball’s decision could not have been worse. Clark made a WNBA rookie record-tying seven 3’s and scored 30 points in front of the largest WNBA crowd in 17 years: 20,333, Friday night in Washington, D.C. Entering the game, won by Clark’s Indiana Fever, the Fever and Mystics were a combined 2-19. Hundreds of children and adults in the crowd wore Clark’s No. 22 jerseys.

The audience at Capital One Arena was more than double the crowd the Chicago Sky drew the night before in the same building.

For months, Clark’s possible selection has been the topic of speculation throughout the basketball world.

“I don’t know how you leave the country without her,” four-time Olympic gold medalist Lisa Leslie told The Sporting News in April, adding that Clark “one hundred percent” should be on Team USA.

Not saying it did or did not happen but maybe Clark contacted the committee and asked to not be selected.

I think she would be based on her prior comments. But either way, she’ll be very gracious and supportive of the team. That will only win her more fans.

I wish Caitlin would play for Italy, if she was able. Would make the Team USA decision makers look incredibly stupid when Team Italy achieves significantly higher TV viewership numbers than team USA.
And could bring so much more hatred to her for playing for a different country.
Not a good idea

So, they are afraid of Clark's fanbase. That has to be the most cowardly load of bullshit I have ever heard. I understand how this group of idiots have been unable to grow the sport by much for 30 years.

Another theory, and I would actually consider it to be more likely given how stupid their explanation is but I have zero other evidence to support is, the old guard lead by Taurasi froze Clark out of the Olympics the same way Jordan froze Isaiah Thomas out of the Olympics.

I don't recall women's basketball being highly publicized or frequently televised in previous Summer Olympics. Just sayin'. Can't believe this year will be any different.

And Caitlin will have so many other opportunities to be a part of the USA team in the future, when Taurasi and company are shooting paper wads into the wastebasket from their rocking chairs in an assisted living facility.

I couldn't give a shit less about "the old guard" they are a bunch of angry jealous lezbos. It's another political move catering to a certain group

I will not watch a second of it and hardly anyone else will
My main point STILL is she could probably use the few weeks off. She looked refreshed last night after just having a few days off.

This happens in the World Baseball Classic often. And, frankly, representing a country that is about to nominate a felon for president isn't what I'd want to be doing.
Lolol, and our other option is a teetering OLD man who needs assistance going up and down stairs and who can't string together two coherent sentences. Great options we'll have come November......

If CC truly is being "targeted" or "hated on" by other players around the league her getting to know other top players from different teams during the Olympics and them getting to know her as well mighta benefitted her a little bit when they get back to regular season games.
But then again maybe not.

This would have been the explanation they gave if that were the case. They wouldn't have come out with this "we are afraid of her fans" bullcrap.
Yeah that’s a “Throw shit against the wall and see if it sticks.”, excuse. No way that is the real reason.

All good players. They should dominate and win the gold in a landslide. Can't say there is one woman on this team that doesn't deserve to be there based on their skill and talent. (I should edit this - based on my limited knowledge of WNBA players) Maybe the deal will be to name Gray on the team, she then won't be able to play due to her injury and Caitlin fills the spot. That would be a way of satisfying both sides of the ledger. Maybe.

Different games and Caitlin probably is better off not risking injury competing in a 3 on 3 tournament in the middle of the WNBA season.......
Is it possible 3 on 3 suits Caitlin’s game more than 5 on 5? I don’t know much about style of play but feel like she’d be better than HVL. Anyone with more knowledge can feel free to enlighten.

I don't follow the WNBA, but based on the coverage of the Final Four, there are a couple of former UConn players on the team who are probably very happy Caitlin is not on the team. I know Caitlin would bring more attention to the team, but is she now clearly better than the players named to the team?

Speaking of changing of the OLD guard:

Diana turns 42 in 3 days, on June 11.

Caitlin turned 22 on Jan 22.

Let's compare the two; and look at the assist difference.

.............................Pts...Rebs...Asts...Stl...Blk...FG%..3Pt%..FT%
Caitlin Clark......16.8...5.3......6.3...1.5...0.9...37.3....32.7...89.3
Diana Taurasi....16.3...4.5......1.1...0.6...0.1....37.0...36.0...84.6

Bullshit. People saying this is good for her should stfu. No it isn't good for her and no one but her should decide if she needs a break.

Those are the two I thought about as well. DT and 'Stewey' lol. Both of them hold themselves in high regard, so being overshadowed by Caitlin in Paris would have been tough on their egos.

And I can guarantee that Taurasi hasn't seen nearly the defensive pressure that Clark has seen.

I look at it this way: When the next Olympics comes around in 2028, Caitlin will be thoroughly settled and shining brightly in the WNBA. She'll be looking for another challenge. The 2028 Summer Olympics is in LA, so many more of her fans can be there to watch her in person. There will be much more in the way of US national coverage, special features, etc. This will work out fine for all of us in the long run.

Even these rankings are designed to create manufactured drama.

But, to think the Fever could have drafted Martin.
Could you imagine if Kate was starting for the Fever instead of Wallace, who basically brings nothing to their lineup. Taylor was their second pick, and I don't think she's played 10 minutes all year.....
