WBB 16/17 Season

Women's Committee placed a HEAVY emphasis on their perspective of strong wins. Michigan (only Purdue and Gonzaga), Indiana (only Purdue), Iowa (Iowa St, Michigan St) did not have big wins, while UNI (Creighton, Kansas St), Auburn (Tennessee, Drake) and Cal (UCLA, Oregon, Oklahoma), had what the committee felt where wins worthy of selection.

Michigan St and Purdue got in based on their wins versus Ohio St.

Must win at least one win against a strong foe or a couple against tourney teams that don't barely get in.

How well will it sit with the athletic department for Iowa to be the only Div I school in the state not to make the tournament?

It seemed like the tourney selection for the women's side was a bit more rigged against the Big Ten in general this year. Maryland getting a #3 seed when one of only TWO losses they had all season was against UConn? Ohio State, the only other team they lost to was given a #5 seed. Think both should have been a notch higher than they were given. And Maryland is put in the same bracket as UConn as well, making it very difficult for them to get to the final four.

Even Brenda Frese noted that they were surprised by the #3 seed versus the #2 seed when being interviewed by the tourney show, which most coaches won't come out and say unless they really feel slighted.

This was a rebuilding year for both men's and women's teams. I think it is more important that Hawks break through next year for their BB teams with the big freshman classes getting a year under their belt to grow.

It's just too bad that two of my favorite seniors on both teams, Peter Jok, and Ally Disterhoft, each having sensational seasons in their playing abilities and in leadership roles, don't have the shots that would be nice to have if they got in to the dance instead of the NIT.

Anyone know if they are going to broadcast the women's NIT game in any fashion this year? Last year couldn't find it at all anywhere on the web.

My guess is that they heavily emphasized RPI ratings too, so if you have a conference with many young teams without a lot of experience, and not a way to fuel a higher RPI when they all play each other later in the year when they get better, that what they did (or didn't!) do in non-conference early on hurt them in the end.

And they did play tough teams too (like Iowa playing #1 Notre Dame, 4 UCLA, and clobbered #10 UNI, #16 Robert Morris, and #15 Hampton along with beating #9 Iowa State handily). I wonder if they had won the game against #10 Drake if they might have gotten in based on the NC wins quotient.

Maryland only lost to unbeaten UConn outside of the Big Ten this year. They beat tourney teams #8 Arizona State and #4 Louisville too.

Iowa beat ISU and UNI so there is nothing to be embarrassed about in that regard. UNI making field is puzzling to me

The Hawks will host Missouri State on Thursday the 16th. 7PM TIP.
Win, and they play the winner of North Dakota-South Dakota.

Purdue's RPI sure picked up towards the end of regular season. It was in the 90s when Iowa lost to them.

Is this the first time ever that all Iowa schools except UI got into the NCAA tournament?

Only way to see the game Thursday is to be inside CHA? Too much men's BB and wrestling for that.

It's on BTN-Plus, so you do have to pay to watch it.

That's good to see. I have that so I guess I'll get to watch it then. Last year, BTN Plus didn't carry the WNIT game Iowa lost in the first round on. This game wasn't listed there yesterday.

I wonder if BTN Network got a lot of pressure to cover these games this year from a lot of the different coaches, given that many felt that the B1G got shortchanged on only four entries in to the NCAA tourney.

I hope that even if Iowa can't win this game, that Ally gets a chance to score 20 points this game and get the record set during the time when I was going to school there by Cindy Haugejorde then. That would be a good way to go out for her if she could do it, even if she can't play in NCAA tourney games her last two seasons here. But it would be better of course if they both have a long run and she can have more chances to score and set that record as well.

WOMEN’S NIT
Hawkeye seniors Disterhoft, Schneden want to extend season

One needs 19 points to tie a career scoring record for the Iowa women’s basketball program which has stood since 1980.

The other has played 19 minutes this season.

But Ally Disterhoft and Hailey Schneden, one-time high school rivals and now senior teammates, share one objective.

They want to keep the Hawkeye season going for as long as it can, beginning with a 7 p.m. opening-round game in the WNIT today at Carver-Hawkeye Arena.

“The more games we get as a team, the better. I don’t want it to end,’’ said Disterhoft, who is 20 points away from passing the 2,059 points that Cindy Haugejorde scored for Iowa between 1976-80.

Just out of curiosity where and what is Cindy Haugejorde doing at this time? It would have been nice if the Athletic Director invited her to be present Thursday nite to introduce her at half time and honor her. Conceivably she could share in the celebration honoring Ally's accomplishment. One would not want to put pressure on Ally , but adults can keep secrets!

And perhaps then BTN Plus wouldn't black out the half time show the way it usually does if they had a good event then too. Nice idea.

Hawks won their WNIT tonight 95-74.
Ally D had 21 to become Iowa's all time leading scorer. Kathleen (18) and Mak (14) both played well. Megan had a double-double with 14 and 10. With the 10 rebounds she set a single season rebounding record. (old record by Amy Herrig). Hannah Stewart did well again with 10 points. It was good to see Christina Buttenham back.
Kathleen Doyle had 6 assists, giving her 131 for her FR year. The record is 136 by Sam Logic.

Very impressive, M State was only down 2 with a minute to go at Drake a couple of weeks ago. Nice to see the team come out strong and then keep the pedal down for 4 quarters, hope they remember that for next season. Might have actually worked in our favor for Cera to pick up two quick fouls, as well as the bench played.

I like this team a lot. They have accomplished some good things. What strikes me, however, is how good they might be if they learned to avoid turnovers and play better defense. These are correctible areas of the game. Defense is a lot dedication and turnovers can be corrected with more focus on playing smart. The coaches are certainly harping on these areas of the game... next year could be very good if these areas see improvement.

Next game is Saturday at 3pm, in Carver. Opponent will be South Dakota.
SD won the WNIT last year.
The defense had a big let down after they got to a 30 point lead. To be expected. But Lisa was still on them about it. A young team needs to learn how to play with a big lead.

Hmmm...I suppose their 11-0 run to open the half to really blow the game open for good happened with Cera on the bench?

Point was that it got us out of the 4 guard lineup, where Coley and Stewart were able to come in and help set the tone for the first half.

But thanks for bringing some snark into the thread.

I think this was more a compliment to the bench and not a Cera slam.
Seriously - if you're going to be this sensitive you really need to get off the message board. I like your 'inside' perspective, but if you're offended by this comment you're going to flip when true trolls chime in.

You're welcome...Seems that Linus has an issue with that though? See how we don't know the real intent of these comments because of it being in print? I see your point as well, but all of them bring something different to the game that makes them valuable as a team and they played like a team for the entire game for once.

Congrats to Disterhoft for breaking the record. At times during this season I thought the record would slip away from her, but she did it. Meyer looked more and more like Dixon, literally. She just needs to put on a thick headband and the transformation will be complete:)

Megan Gustafson. WOW!! 33 points on 15-16 shooting. Despite being hacked and shoved all game, she just powers through. She has already set a Hawk records for rebounds in a season (320), and is now on the verge of scoring 600 points in a season (she has 597, most ever by a soph). Only 3 other Hawks have ever scored 600. Cindy Haugejorde, 693, Ice Edwards 621, and Franthea Price 614. Truly a historic season.
Kathleen Doyle broke Sam Logic' FR assists record today too, She now has 138. And that is despite Sharing the PG duties with Tania for much of the year.
Ally pushed the scoring record to 2,071.
Oh, and the Hawks won 78-73 to advance to the 3rd round of the WNIT. They will play the winner of South Dakota State and Colorado. That game will be played tomorrow and the Hawks should know if they host or travel, the game time, and the opponent by around 3:30 pm.

Hannah Stewart 5 of 6 to compliment Megan, so 20 of 22 for the center position. Lex with 4 big FTs to help clinch the win down the stretch.

Not oakhawk, but in both WNIT games she has not participated in warmups even so I presume she has had a recurrence. I just hope she can go next season and it is not career-ending.

Carly was dressed for the first game, and was on the bike when I talked to her.She didn't dress today. She was walking with a very slight limp. Tweaked the knee. They will decide after the season whether or not a further operation will be needed. Poor girl can't catch a break.

The game will be at 7pm. The Hawks need a big crowd. If they win, the crowd will matter for the next round.

DM register put out their Girls basketball elite team today. Houston was not on the 5A team, but was listed in an all class honorable mention. Thoughts?

Bluder and staff good with fundamentals, especially in post. They typically lack quickness, so they spread the floor on offense which works if you have great shooters like Dixon. Bluder teams can score. The issue with lack of quickness really shows in weak defense and poor rebounding. Those constant Bluder issues won't change until you recruit speed. Iowa almost never beats really good teams, again those teams have athleticism and Iowa not near enough.
Next year Tania comes back and hopefully full speed. Also, Houston should help athleticism. Gustafson will be a huge plus for offense, but who are the shooters??? No shooters, no offense. Likely same problems with rebounding and defense, however. 20+ wins, slightly above middle of the pack and early out in NCAA.
Bluder has 700 wins, so you can't knock her much. No one knows if anyone else could get more out of the program. Remember all the fans wanting to replace Tom Davis and we got mediocrity from Alford and disaster from Lickliter. Then Davis went and built moribund Drake into a winner. I say keep Bluder, but AD can help her recruit better.

WNIT is helping the team for next year. Hope they can win a couple more games. Gustafson had a phenomenal box score stat line today.

She missed a large portion of the season with an injury.

Jinaya Houston certainly a top talent in the state of Iowa. The Register is not a good barometer for getting "it right". If you've ever met some of those who make these selections, you would understand why. Had she played in central Iowa, it would have been a different story.

I may be a little prejudiced, but I don't see many other high school players in Iowa controlling or stopping Naya.

Maybe Meyer and Buttenham and Cera can score. They all were over 35% from 3.

She was an all state selection last season. I've seen her game described as a Disterhoff clone. Bluder has been recruiting her since the 6th grade so I'm sure she's good.

Don't forget that Alexis Sevillian also redshirted this year which gives Iowa another quick guard who can score.
