WBB 16/17 Season

Elle is fun to watch, great player, but too short. She can really shoot and is a great leader. She isn't slow, but not Tania speed.

Yeah, first I'd heard of the Bears (then SW Missouri St) was when they beat us in an NCAA tournament game in Iowa City. We had Jolette Law, Steph Scheuler, Franthea Price and Shanda Berry. OTOH we sort of got our revenge during the time Katie Abramson coached there later on.

That game was in 1992. I was there. It kept iowa from another Final Four. The fix was in. Iowa got hit with a lot of bad calls, including Vivian being given a technical for walking out on the floor to grab a shoe that a player lost on their way down court. The game was on the opposite end at that moment, Iowa lost in OT.

Thanks! That was a fun team - the only way to stop them from going for a layup off a break was a tackle. I've been trying to remember the other forward besides Price, who like Price was also 5'9". A very short team, even for the time.

what's the chances that carly mohans gets a another medical year if she has to have surgery again on her knee

You're probably thinking of the 1990 team. All those players graduated by 1991 per the media guide. The 1992 team had Toni Foster, Andrea Harman, Tia Jackson, Cathy Marx and Necole Tunsil. Both fun teams though.

The amazing thing about that group was that Foster, Harman, Jackson and Tunsil were each top 10 recruits. Quite a group! The Hawkeyes were loaded back then, As I recall, with Penn State not yet in the conference, it was a race between OSU and Iowa and the margin of error was thin. A second loss in conference play meant second place. Ohio State's coach moved on the Stanford. Vivian took the Rutgers job, after her husband died. Other conference teams then started to catch up....

Sixth years are iffy. However, IMO she would have a legit shot. My question is whether she wants to hang around that long. Given the recent upgrade in recruiting success, she may also be wondering what her chances will be to contribute. Only the most dedicated would purse such a course...

Ally sits at 2,071 points. The top scorer in Iowa BB history is Roy Marble at 2,116. If the Hawks could possibly make it to the championship game, Ally would need 15 ppg to tie that mark.

Now it it is like Lisa Bluder's battle first to overtake Vivian Stringer's victory total and subsequently to go past Tom Davis's total too. Similar history line. Ally go for it! And if it does happen in WNIT championship game, I hope they can stop the game for that moment and perhaps have Devin Marble on hand where all of us can have a moment of silence for the great Roy Marble, who we also lost way too soon to cancer a year ago. Perhaps play some sort of tribute to a cancer society then too as a means to get attention to fighting this terrible disease. I've personally found out a few weeks ago that a very young friend of mine had found out she got diagnosed with lung cancer too. I'm sure Ally would give a great statement at a time like that, as decent a person she's been her whole career at Iowa.

Not that I really care but it would be interesting to know how the ticket revenue is split between Iowa, the WNIT and whomever. I assume concession revenue goes to the university. Does anyone have info on this? If I did not live 500 miles away, I would be shelling out my $13 plus food purchase coin. Go Hawks!

r448chlpo,

http://www.toledoblade.com/UT/2011/04/27/WNIT-profitable-venture-for-UT.html

For the third game -- a victory over Alabama with 3,740 spectators on hand -- UT placed a bid of $16,942 but ended up having to pay $22,203 to the WNIT because of its revenue-sharing agreement. If a school makes money in the WNIT, it must pay 85 percent of its first $30,000 in net receipts and 55 percent of all profits over $30,000 provided those revenue figures are larger than its bid amount.

I found this article (a little dated) that describes the bid and revenue split. This is 6 years old so the percents and levels may be different today. The link is to the full article, but the paragraph above represent the split in 2011.

The Hawks reached the Elite 8 with a 80-62 win over Colorado.
They will host again on Sunday at 2pm.
They will play the winner of UC Davis and Washington State.
It will be Washington State.

Lex Kastanek came up big with 19. (5 3ptrs) Ally had 15, Megan 12, Mak 13 (with 3 threes).
Kathleen handled the Colorado press pretty well, only 1 TO.
Ally now with 2,086 points.
Megan has 609 points on the season , within 13 of second highest total ever.

I saw an interview with Disterhoft where she mentioned that the team really appreciated the administration's support in hosting these games. Leads me to believe that maybe we are losing money on these. Not that there is anything wrong with that.

Also should mention Bre Cera and Kathleen Doyle's defense on Colorado's 1st team PAC12 guard. She had 29 last game. They held her to 6 on 2-14 shooting. Good to see Bre stay out of early foul trouble and get 30 minutes.

I agree, the University regularly makes lesser investments. This is good for both the team and the fans. The team is , at least as viewed from afar, a great representative for the school and Bluder's program. They are playing hard, playing team basketball, they seem to get along well and they appear to be having fun, good for them!

Which, at its core, is what college athletics should be about.

Washington State sure has an international flavor...
Players from Greece, France, Australia, Bulgaria, Serbia, Macedonia, and Portugal.

Sorry if it's been asked & answered already, but will the Sunday game vs WA St be televised & if so, when & where? Thanks.

BTN2go is committed to broadcasting all games B1G teams are in until the final game in NY next Saturday on CBS Sports Network at noon PST (2 PM CST). I'm seeing it in my Dish Network schedule today that just got Saturday's schedule last night (channel 158).

BTN2go, unlike last year, where there was NO broadcast anywhere of Iowa's game against Ball State that they lost in the WNIT, looks to be making an effort to cover all of these games his year even though they wait until a day or two before the game to have it show up on the BTN2go schedule.

Ultimately Sunday's game should be on this page at 2 PM CST...

http://www.btn2go.com/schedule?day=2017-03-26

I wonder if BTN's coverage of the WNIT this year is helping all of the B1G teams in the tourney this year to have them televised compared to a year ago when they weren't in that 3 of the 4 teams are still alive in the elite 8 of the WNIT now (Iowa, Indiana, and Michigan) with only Penn State losing the last round. I'm sure that the added attention to each of these schools in a year that the B1G was under-seeded in the women's NCAA tournament as well as the men's tournament, is helping them play better too.

This will be helpful the B1G in recruiting that much more this coming year too, and a conference with a lot of young and talented teams will become even more so to be very strong in the next few years.

I just wish that BTN would work with member universities to help improve the quality of the various student produced broadcasts that much more (or perhaps Iowa would do a better job in putting them together). I'd like to think that this time of year, there would be a lot more polish to these broadcasts even if at the beginning of the year they might show a bit more errors during non-conference season of inexperience, etc. But even the last WNIT game broadcast had some really poor quality announcer audio that was dropping out a lot in addition to some other problems that it looks like the cut out the broadcast at half time for a while to hunt down and correct for the second half.

BTN2go is a good opportunity for student telecommunications departments to really help their students build resume items to show their experience and talent in putting together nationally broadcast events that I didn't have when I was in that department, but it can also really hurt such department's reputations along with those of the students that are a part of them if it doesn't show efforts to have them grow in to a decent product that moves towards the quality expected on other nationally commercially broadcast events on other channels.

I also wonder if Iowa women get to New York for the finals, if Barclay's bank might have some celebrations with the team before or after the game where Ally Disterhoft is supposed to start working in a new job there after she graduates this year. I'm guessing that there might be a few Barclay's bank people attending the game if they make it to the finals.

I don't think Iowa making any money on these games but someone mentioned attendance was reason for home games. I think Iowa draws 3,000 or more which means other schools not doing as well
Like you, I am happy to see the support and hope it pays off in long run too with extra games and experience

Unlike the NIT, the finals are not in New York. All home games. The NIT and WNIT are owned by separate organizations.

The other two quarterfinal games that B1G teams are involved with (Michigan and Indiana) are also in B1G home locations in Ann Arbor and South Bend too. So perhaps all of the games from this point forward if B1G teams all win will be in B1G (other than GA Tech vs. Alabama).

Not sure on how broadcast rights are assigned too, but if it is like early in the season where the school where the game is being played (which makes it hard at times in the past to get road games such as Drake and UNI on a network we have access to), won't be on BTN2GO if it is a road game. Another big reason to attend the game to ensure that the subsequent game remains home AND that we all have access to the broadcast of it through BTN2GO too for sure.

Iowa's responsible for the horrible production of WBB games. Ridiculous they show replays WHILE THE BALL IS PLAY! Production is generally a lot better during Iowa B1G road games.

You're right. Thought I saw the final game being in New York somewhere. But I must have with my bad aging eyes saw it being promoted as broadcast by CBS Sports Network on the bracket page showing as:

Championship Game Televised On
CBS Sports
Network

And confused "Network" with "New York", figuring that CBS sports would be setting up to broadcast it from there... :p

Great though, another opportunity for an Iowa home game to be on national TV!

Yes, the replays are also buttressed by useless (and commercially sponsored) video clips to transition in to them and out of them too, which identify them as replays, but take that much more time away from the live coverage which should be the focus of the telecast. If they want to have such gimmicks during half time or what would normally be commercial breaks, I'd be fine with that, but it is annoying hearing like in the last game that we had another steal break for the basket being talked about by the announcer while they were showing a replay of the former steal and break. That should NOT happen, and this time of year, there should not be that level of inexperience by a staff that governs that decision to happen.

Iowa back in the 70's and 80's had a very good reputation for it's Film and Broadcasting program. It is a big reason why I came to Iowa then from being in high school in Michigan, when I was motivated initially to pursue that as a career. It produced great people like noted film director Nicholas Meyer from this school then and had a lot of good faculty too. The poor quality of this broadcast really hurts the university's image in a program that it at one time had a very good reputation for. That makes these broadcasts harder to watch for me too.

I would like to think that BTN would have some involvement though in helping member schools define a baseline level of expectations of rules they have for doing broadcasts so that some minimal level of quality for all schools should be adhered to to put these games on their web site too, even if I think that perhaps Iowa itself is more responsible for these problems than BTN is. It is a combination of problems both from Iowa itself and BTN in dealing with this. It also seems like in previous years on BTN that the quality of Iowa's broadcasts were a lot better than they were this year too. Someone at Iowa should be looking at who's managing the show this year.
