WBB 16/17 Season

Ally sits at 2,071 points. The top scorer in Iowa BB history is Roy Marble at 2,116. If the Hawks could possibly make it to the championship game, Ally would need 15 ppg to tie that mark.

She got 15 points against Colorado... Wish she got a bit more to make sure she gets this, but she's still got this in her sights. Really hope that if she gets that mark that Devin Marble can attend the nationally broadcast championship game next Saturday in Iowa City then, and that they can have a special moment not only honoring Ally, but also honoring his father Roy Marble and perhaps a tribute to supporting the fight against cancer then, along with James Valvano, who Iowa has played tourney games in the past.

Maybe as a part of that tribute, Devin could wear a pink Iowa Hawkeye t-shirt that we would show under a black and gold Iowa Hawkeye coat that would be a good tribute to the games where women BB teams wear pink to help fight breast cancer too.

This could be a lot more possible if the championship game is in Iowa City.

You folks are giving the BTN+ feed too much credit to call it a "production." All we get, as far as I can tell, is the feed that plays on the CHA scoreboard. That is why there are replays while there is live action, and we get the Delta Dental cam, the burrito lift, et al. A few of the games that Zach Mackey has announced have seemed to be a real broadcast. But at least half of them this year, particularly nonconference, are just showing what the scoreboard screens show.

The production for the first two games was off site. Nobody live at the game. They used the radio feed for the commentary. Last night there were guys at the game, but they took off before the game was done, and the sound switched back to the radio feed. I guess , compared to last year, it was better than nothing.

A few of the games that Zach Mackey has announced have seemed to be a real broadcast. But at least half of them this year, particularly nonconference, are just showing what the scoreboard screens show.

They are obviously taking raw feeds from many sources, like the radio broadcast (complete with the production crew voice "30 seconds!" cues that don't air on radio broadcast themselves), and perhaps the video feed that is piped in to the cameras at the arena too (I don't attend these events so I am not as familiar with what is shown to the audience). Now in the case of what is shown to audience there, this might be perfectly fine.

But if you are going to be putting together a broadcast that sources these other media sources for people who can't watch the game by being in attendance of it, you need to do it intelligently. You need to work with them if you are going to offer replays, and perhaps have a separate replay recorder that records those replays offline for later playback, and perhaps work with them to help source them in a more productive way to weed out the audio that shouldn't be aired, and also the video that shouldn't be too. If those sources are too complicated to reassemble to put forth in the BTN broadcast, then get your own equipment to do these things the way a visiting ESPN or BTN network broadcast would do it or the like. Either that or for the most part just leave some of them out that do more harm than good.

Ultimately the broadcast should work on its own with its own priorities and not just say "Oh, that's the way the original content was given to us." That's not a good excuse.

I would agree 'better than nothing' if it were free. Not worth $10/mo. But I love watching the Hawks, so I'm going to continue to pay it.

Something aside from the current team. I just learned that former player Randi Peterson has been an assistant coach at UNC Charlotte for two years, under her Iowa teammate Cara Consuegra. But, more interestingly, she is married to no other than Duez Henderson, our beloved former men's player and a mainstay in the PTL. No wonder he doesn't play in the PTL any more! When I saw this old news article about Randi (Peterson) Henderson resigning from her head coaching position at Coe and she thanked Coe and called it a blessing for "Duez" and her, I knew something "suspicious" was going on:)

I sat next to Randi at a City High- West High game during Ally's senior year. I asked who she was watching and if she was recruiting Ally. She said that she would love to have Ally at Coe. But she was scouting Mickey Hansche from City High (Mickey ended up going to Coe and had a nice career). Then Duez cam up and sat next to her. After a few minutes it became clear that there was more than being friends going on. They make a good couple.

Question for WBB fans: How much heckling of college WBB players is acceptable? Some? None? Happened to be sitting near the WSU bench today and watched a grown man barking at/taunting a WSU player as she came out of the game. The player did nothing to warrant it. I told him to shut the *@#$ up. He yelled back that he paid his money and can do whatever he wants. I have trouble with grown-ups taunting any college kid, even if he/she deserves some talking to. That's especially the case for a woman/girl player.

Could be just me, but I think you answered your own question (and I personally agree with it) when you said you told the moron to shut up. Only woman's player I can recall wanting to see "dealt with" was that Prahalis (sp?) guy who played a few years ago.

Don't know, but it seems the Athletic Dept. wants to promote WBB as a family-oriented event, so I'd think they'd take action if the heckling grew abusive/obscene.

It seems that heckling opposing players and referees is the main reason a lot of "fans" go to women's games.

Must not be a very progressive group here as the question arises, should women athletes be treated any differently then males? Apparently, so in this group. (Actually, I would be far less inclined to rag on a female myself... one exception being former OSU player, Prohalis of several years ago!) Living 10 miles from Ohio State campus, I had to quietly put up with her for 4 years. She was amazing in her sense of entitlement. It has been quite awhile since the Hawkeyes had someone deserving of such treatment in any case.

I haven't seen anyone taunting opposing players at WBB games. But, as with the men's NIT, you get new "fans" at these events.
Yelling at the refs, of course, in normal.

There's a guy with the W sweatshirt at the tunnel end of the arena that has shouted some stuff a few times when the opposing player was shooting a FT.

The guy with the W is an attention whore. He is trying to draw attention to himself.

And now transfer season begins across college basketball. Shepard leaving Nebraska, Gondrezick leaving Michigan, TeeTee Starks leaving ISU, also transfers from Pitt, Arkansas, New Mexico and on.

So true. I kept looking at all those fans getting red in the face screaming at the officials thinking, where the hell have you been all season?

Thanks for the news, oakhawk.

We should be used to all the transfers by now, but the first two are surprising. Both Shepard and Gondrezick were second team All Big Ten this year. Shepard was Big Ten freshman of the year last year; Gondrezick was freshmen All Big Ten this year. Both were home state Miss Basketballs. It sounds like Shepard just wants to play for a winning program rather than the dumpster fire at Nebraska. But Michigan is in the WNIT semifinals currently, even after Gondrezick, their third-leading scorer, took an indefinite leave of absence after the first two rounds for personal reasons.

TeeTee Starks is a different story. She no doubt was another in a long line of players who didn't get along with Bill Fennelly. See the lawsuit of last year. Then a week ago, their best player announced she would forego her senior season next year. I have no inside info, but in her statement she thanked everyone but the head coach. On top of that, the AD just gave him a contract extension. Go figure. Just glad we have a class act for a coach here.

Lower prices help make women's games a good item to promote for families. Also to economy minded older fans.

Been looking at CycloneFanatic, not all of those folks are pleased with Fennelly's extension. A few feel the program has plateaued, or fallen back a bit. Not much there on info about Buckley, one speculated she might do a graduate transfer. Others feel she's just tired of playing and has put in her 4 years and so is just going to graduate and move on. Re: TeeTee Starks, my own guess is she's going to rejoin her old ISU teammate, Bryanna Fernstrom in Gopherland.

Is he the same guy that was interviewed on one of the half time shows of the NIT games that was on btn2go? Made a big deal about him having the "W" shirt. Didn't mention whether or not he was a Bush fan or not, thank god!

I've been hearing the same thing about Starks. Will be interesting to see where she lands.

That would be interesting if T.T ends up in Minnesota too. I recall Billy Fennelly (coach's son & asst.) complaining in an interview he had evidence that the Minnesota staff "recruited or tampered" with Fernstrom prior to her leaving ISU.

Could be a Cubs fan if it's a big blue "W".

I'm not sure what that guy was saying, but I thought the whole sequence of #21 fouling out hilarious. She new that the band was going to chant "see ya" when she sat down so she went to get a drink of water twice and faked sitting down several times turning to smile at the band in between. Then when she finally sat down her and a teammate kept pointing at the scoreboard

That would be good too, but it is the I-O-W-A cheer they do on rare occasions at BB games. His corner is W.

His schtick does get old on opponent free throws.

They do the i o w a cheer every women's game and he was the guy interviewed at halftime in a recent game.

That whole sequence was funny. The band chanted "The Band is not a Toy" once she finally did sit. Would have been more fun were we winning.

This guy was barking at her about actually committing a lot more than the five she was called for. Seeing a grown man yell at a 19-22 year old woman who did nothing to provoke it (if that matters), close enough that the WSU team could hear it all, I felt crossed a line.

And the transfer train is rolling...
4 from Rutgers
3 from Maryland, including the FR of the year
Pitt is losing their top scorer and rebounder
UNC Charlotte (Cara Conseugra's team) is losing their top scorer
and the aforementioned Shepard from Nebraska
TeeTee Starks from ISU. Gondrezick leaving Michigan.
Who is getting in these players ears?

I'd been expecting coach Stringer to announce her retirement by now; guessing she doesn't want to leave on a sour note.

Earlier in the year they/she announced they had reached an agreement to an extension for her. She said her contract was used against her in recruiting & hurting the program. Today 4 transfers are announced, 3 starters from this year who would have likely returned to the bench next year with all the redshirts becoming eligible. @Raoul also reports no official word that the contract has actually been finalized.

I'm most surprised by Slocum and then by Gondrezick. But four from Rutgers? That's rough. I hope C. Viv has a good class coming in and Rutgers can bounce back from their injuries. Really curious to see where all of these transfers will end up.
