*** #10 Iowa vs Michigan St WBB Game Thread ***

To me it looks like the MSU girl right in the center made a movement that caused Clark's arm to move up and out.

Terrible unlucky break for Iowa but at least got the win.
It seemed unintentional to me. But with no angles, even if you watch it a hundred times, it’s hard to see what happened. Maybe the refs had better camera angles.

I listened to the game and didn’t know what to think. But after seeing it, that is not my vision of a flagrant foul. Not an elbow, no clear intent to make contact. If that is a flagrant, there are a lot of uncalled flagrant fouls in every game
Exactly. She got smacked in the last game and damn near knocked her off her feet. No harm. We have guys get hit in the face all the time, (Cmac in our last game), and I've yet to EVER see them call a flagrant....

CC certainly is a magnet for controversy.

One of those players that you love if she's on your team and hate if she's not.

Reminds me of the Jeff Moe days.

I think its short sighted for people to think that Clark would have "intentionally" hit that girl. I mean think about it. 1) would she risk that at that point in the game. 2) Even harder to believe, would she risk injuring or even breaking her right hand on some girls face? I find that really hard to believe.....Pretty crazy too because Clark got smacked in the face in the last game and damn near knocked her out, but THAT was a basketball move, so no biggie....
Right. This is why I don't think Clark did it intentionally. If she really wanted to hit the MSU player for whatever reason, there are many better ways. She could've just ran into her on the inbounds play. She could've taken the shot right after the game was over. Clark isn't dumb. Hitting someone during a dead ball with cameras watching is the worst possible way to do it if it was intentional, and it was also the only way MSU could realistically get back in the game.

I guess maybe some people think it was a spur of the moment decision but still intentional. That's more plausible, but she really didn't hit the MSU player very hard. Usually if you act out of anger you don't also have the forethought to pull the punch.

I certainly appreciate good statistical arguments, but I think this one lacks a key piece of context. For most of women's basketball history, the sport has lacked parity. There have been a few elite teams every year, and the gap between the haves and the have nots has been pretty huge. You aren't going to find a ton of outlier profiles when the dominant teams are usually the only ones that make Final Fours.

This year, there just aren't many elite teams. South Carolina is elite, but they're arguably the only one. Stanford just lost to unranked USC. UConn can't stay healthy, and we played toe to toe with them on a neutral court when they were nearly as healthy as they're going to be this season.

Ohio State is another good example. The Buckeyes are #2 in the nation right now without their best player and with largely the same roster as last year. Iowa won't be favorites against Ohio State on Monday, but no one would be shocked if Iowa beats them.

I certainly don't think Iowa is likely to make the Final Four this year. This team has glaring flaws. But I don't think Iowa making a Final Four would be a complete shock either. Not in a year with so few truly elite teams.
Speaking of South Carolina, their center Aliyah Boston (last year's national player of the year) has to be the most overrated player in the country. She's not even in the top thirty in scoring average and barely makes the top thirty for rebounding yet she's being mentioned again for national player of the year. Playing on a defending national champion team which is currently top ranked obviously has its benefits.

Clark reminds me of Jackie Stiles of Mo State back in the day. Just carrying this team.

She’s athletic to be sure but her skills are in her height.
And if she doesn’t win her POS coach will cry racism.

MSU may lead the country in overacting and poor sportsmanship behavior. Sad. The girl CC hit acted like she took a punch from Muhammed Ali. Then the Big Ten refs do what they do, mess it up. Glad we hung on.

My take is that Clark meant to move her arm, but didn't know the MSU player was there and hit her unintentionally.

I think if an MSU player hit Clark's arm in some way and forced her into the movement that we would've heard that defense from Bluder and/or Clark post game.
Watch the replay long enough to see Bluder "show" the ref what happened. She makes a motion like Clark's arm was grabbed or pushed.
🤔

Didn't see the game on TV but was told by someone who did that the MSU players on their bench were seen mocking CC with hand gestures at various times during the game. If true, it was definitely bush league and certainly the epitome of poor sportsmanship. I liked CC's response - an OT win with a 26 point, 11 assist, 9 rebound stat line.

I kept watching the MSU girl thinking she's going to flop on the floor.

A few of them waved Monica off the floor after she fouled out.
Ya - They're a classy bunch.
