This is the Brody I thought we’d see most of the season. I’m very glad he’s figuring it out and also, I wish he was here 2 months ago.
In fairness, it’s cool that he’s on the watch list and proceeding (and he was dominant this weekend), but he’s not winning national pitcher of the year. It’s almost certainly going to be Hagen Smith from Arkansas, who is 8-0 with a 1.35 ERA, an 0.817 WHIP and 111 Ks to 23 BBs in 60 innings.College pitcher of the year? How can that be? According to ColesLaw, Brody sucks!
@IowasLaw says he sucks tho.
Brody always comes down to Brody. When he’s near the zone (most specifically locating his fastball), he’s virtually unhittable. His slider is almost criminal and he’ll elevate that 4-seamer so if a guy falls behind, there’s a lot of chase going on…..but when he’s NOT locating the fastball, nobody is going to swing and chase the slider because why would they, and then when he has to get a fastball over behind in the count, guys are sitting on it.This seems good.
They need to reel in wins with these next 5 games against lesser opponents!Brody always comes down to Brody. The last 2 starts (and a couple earlier in the season) is the Brody Brecht I was hoping to see all season. Development in baseball is never linear though, guys ebb and flow all the time and Brody has missed a lot of time compared to his peers by playing football. He’ll still almost certainly be a 1st round pick this year (and he always has the chance to not sign and come back if he’s not) and he still has a really bright future in MLB.

Pretty impressive he’s gotten his WHIP back down to 1.25.Brody Brecht got the start in todays game vs Northwestern (Iowa won 9-2).
Once again Brody ate up a lot of innings and his control was on. He struck out 13 of the 29 batters he faced.
Brody pitched 8 complete innings. In the top of the 8th inning he struck out 2 MORE Northwestern batters. For the 9th inning, with Iowa leading 9-1, Rick Heller went to the bullpen and brought in Brant Hogue.
Brody's line:
8 innings pitched

115 pitches (72 strikes, 43 balls)
2 Hits allowed
2 walks

.50 WHIP for this game (2 walks + 2 hits / 8 innings pitched). In the Major Leagues, the average WHIP is around 1.30.
In 12 starts and 63 innings pitched:
