11 strikeouts, 2 hits & 1 run allowed in 7 innings pitched seems good.

Brody was masterful. Iowa wins 4-1.

This is the Brody I thought we’d see most of the season. I’m very glad he’s figuring it out and also, I wish he was here 2 months ago.

Once again Brody ate up a lot of innings and his control was on.

Brody started the bottom of the 7th inning with Iowa leading 4-1 and he quickly got all 3 outs. The 1st batter grounded out to 1st base. The 2nd and 3rd batters both struck out swinging. For the bottom of the 8th inning, Heller brought in Young from the bullpen, who struck out the side.

Brody's line:
7 innings pitched
25 batters faced
109 pitches (65 strikes, 44 balls)

2 Hits allowed
3 walks
1 Wild pitch
0 Hit batters
0 Balks

11 strike outs

1 earned runs (of the 1)

.71 WHIP for this game (3 walks + 2 hits / 7 innings pitched). In the Major Leagues, the average WHIP is around 1.30.

In 11 starts and 55 innings pitched:

1.36 WHIP for the season
(38 walks + 37 hits / 55 innings pitched). In the Major Leagues, the average WHIP is around 1.30.

3.76 ERA for the season

College pitcher of the year? How can that be? According to ColesLaw, Brody sucks!

In fairness, it’s cool that he’s on the watch list and proceeding (and he was dominant this weekend), but he’s not winning national pitcher of the year. It’s almost certainly going to be Hagen Smith from Arkansas, who is 8-0 with a 1.35 ERA, an 0.817 WHIP and 111 Ks to 23 BBs in 60 innings.

Brody always comes down to Brody. When he’s near the zone (most specifically locating his fastball), he’s virtually unhittable. His slider is almost criminal and he’ll elevate that 4-seamer so if a guy falls behind, there’s a lot of chase going on…..but when he’s NOT locating the fastball, nobody is going to swing and chase the slider because why would they, and then when he has to get a fastball over behind in the count, guys are sitting on it.

The last 2 starts (and a couple earlier in the season) is the Brody Brecht I was hoping to see all season. Development in baseball is never linear though, guys ebb and flow all the time and Brody has missed a lot of time compared to his peers by playing football. He’ll still almost certainly be a 1st round pick this year (and he always has the chance to not sign and come back if he’s not) and he still has a really bright future in MLB.

They need to reel in wins with these next 5 games against lesser opponents!

I spoke with UI baseball ace Brody Brecht today about his recent dominant stretch.

In his last three starts, he has struck out 36 batters(!!!!), allowed just 2 runs and 5 hits.

Brecht tole me the biggest difference in himself between now and just a couple years ago is his mental approach.

We'll have more from Brody tonight at on KCCINews at 6 and 10.

Swung back around for a second look at Brody Brecht @UIBaseball after a lackluster opening weekend.

Much better today. Power stuff. FB up to 99. Plus plus 87 90 SL. Much improved 90 92 SPL, also a plus pitch.

Struck out the side in B2, all on SLs. Of the 14 pitches that inning, 12 were SLs.

Hawkeyes lead 5-0, Top 4.
