Brody Grothus

141.46 = Pee once, spit twice, hop on the scale.................................
I'm on record for saying I didn't believe Brody could get to this weight and maintain it. I sure hope he does . . . badly.

But tonight I saw a UFC fighter at 6'-1" at 145, so . . .

Long time lurker, first time caller. Finally joined to pitch in on this epic thread. Two degrees from U of I where I was a student in the Gable era after an unexceptional high school wrestling career. Currently living (most of the time anyway) in New York City, just a few blocks from MSG where I intend to be March 17-19. Let me know if I can help with any NYC info.

Glad to have ya crossfacecradle , chime in anytime with any wrestling info.

One of the few from the Land of Lincoln on HR. My handle is what I do. Certified Crop Advisor. Like the previous poster, very few posts and an undistinquished HS wrestling career. I was born in Davenport Ia. Home of Brody Grothus. So, I've got that going for me.

I meant to ask the question in the last post. Are there many times when someone like Brody has had different circumstances keep them off the mat for most of their career and then make a deep run in March their last try. I can see Brody doing that. Just wondered how often it happens.

One of my wrestlers won outstanding wrestler of a Christmas tournament yesterday. He's a big Hawkeye fan and told me he was sending it to Brody after he wins the 141 pound national title this year. "Why not now?" I asked. "He might eat it".

So with 2 Degrees were you a student for the entire Gable era? ;) Just kidding. Welcome.

You too can be a legend!

There is the story of the "Strongest Man in the World", which is pretty cool.

Hey, I'm working on a Midlands challenge in which you rank the top ten Iowa finishers earn their points (and get it multiplied by your rank). Before I start working on this, can someone do it for me? I'm sure it will be better...

Whitmer shook his head when Gable told him before the 1997 season that he was destined to become Iowa’s next NCAA champion. After all, Whitmer was a fifth-year senior who hadn’t even cracked Iowa’s starting lineup on a full-time basis.

But Gable kept repeating it throughout the year and started calling the 118-pounder “The Strongest Man in the World” for his prodigious feats in the weight room. But when Whitmer dropped an 18-7 decision to Michigan State’s David Morgan midway through the season, Gable had to go back to his bag of mind tricks when he addressed the match the next day before practice.

“Instead of pointing out all the things I did wrong in the match, he pointed out everything I did right and what we learned from the match in a positive light,” Whitmer said. “By the time he got done talking, you would’ve thought I won.”

Whitmer said the points Gable made were vital to his mindset later in the season. He knocked off Morgan in the NCAA quarterfinals and made true on Gable’s preseason prediction, becoming Iowa’s next national champ. The TV cameras caught Gable’s first words to Whitmer as he came off the mat: “Strongest Man in the World.”

“He could take a person with some raw talent and a lot of heart and get the absolute most out of that guy,” Whitmer said. “He’d make them believe they could accomplish anything. He believes so much in that individual. I got to the point where I started believing in myself, and it was so much that I wanted to come off the mat having won for myself, I didn’t want to disappoint Coach Gable.”

Here's an article on Brody's commitment to Iowa.

He said he picked the Hawkeyes over offers from Northern Iowa, Oklahoma, Nebraska, Iowa State and George Mason.

Grothus, who projects as a 149- or 157-pounder in college, was set to sign a letter of intent Thursday with Iowa after his whirlwind recruiting process concluded Wednesday night during his flight home from a visit to Oklahoma.

One of my favorite Iowa wrestling moments.

I watched Brody wrestle in high school quite a bit. Even coached against him. If he can stay healthy I believe he can be a bonus point machine. He will be a horse at 141. Keep this thing rolling until the 29th. Forget about 13 pages let's go for the record.

CCA: I'm also from Davenport, even wrestled at Assumption....go Brody...

What? He wasn't projected as a 141-pounder? Inconceivable!

Did you guys see the Imar v Jo Jo Smith match tonight? Imar won 11-6. He was essentially in control for most of the match, but Jo Jo gave him a real go. Jo Jo is a thick kid. I guess I was expecting his dad's more stringy build. Jo Jo is gonna win a hell of a lot of matches for the Pokes.

By the way....I was tempted to start a new "Imar v Jo Jo" string, but I'm all in for Brody here.

Article is not completely accurate. Jessie was not a 103 lber coming out of HS. He wrestled 119 his Senior year. There are a lot of interesting things about Jessie but here are few of them. He didn't start wrestling until he moved to Eagle Grove, I believe in 7 or 8th grade. A couple matches into to his first season he wrestled the coaches son from Iowa Falls by the last name of Jones. If I recall, Jessie beat him (if not, it was really close and Jones was a known commodity) and all of a sudden people started talking. Jessie started as a freshman at 103 and finished 3rd, which again at the time was pretty unexpected. 1st soph, and then two major upsets in Jr and Sr years to take 3rd again.

I see Assumption's coach put a kid out on the matt at the Battle of Waterloo that was ineligible because he did not follow his weight decent plan. The kid after wrestling about a minute and down a few points had to forfeit. It did not impact the outcome New Hampton still took out the #1 2A team. I just hope Brody's decent plan is on pace for a NCCA title.

Do not besmirch the Assumption coach. By the way, I'm yet another from D'port. I went to West although many of my friends and several family have gone to Assumption. I find they prefer Ass High.

Pete was my canoeing partner in gym class up here, which was comical because we had a good 80 pound weight difference and nearly swamped it during finals.

It would be decent if he followed his descent plan better

I stood a few feet away from Brody prior to the Iowa/ISU dual starting and he was doing a quite a bit of texting. His shoulder didn't seem to be bothering him at all while using his phone, so I'm guessing he's fine and 100% ready to go.

LOL. ^ Speaking of injuries these days...it's a wonder that some of these kids can still use their thumbs and wrists...after all of the texting they do. :D
