Brody Grothus

I live in Davenport now. Honestly that's probably one of the reasons why my post have been a little negative lately. No offense to the natives of Davenport this place is a dump. Has to be better than Rock Island however

I was in Davenport for biz a few months back. There is a nice 2 block stretch downtown :) Other than that, it did seem a little depressed :(

I live on that 2 block stretch! Shananigans the local dance/night club just got shut down because of stabbings and regular assaults. Glad i bought a handgun thats forsure. I cant go out downtown with out a bunch of smelly homeless guys asking me for change. Someone broke out the back window of my car to steal my empty luggage bag and shoes. My girlfriend works late nights and i cant sleep until she is inside safe. We can't wait to move!

You on section 8 or something?

#shotsfired. Please tell me one of you is from Clinton, Dubuque, or Muscatine...

This should help the 13 page cause.

I'm not from any of those places, but I did live in Morrison, IL which is just across the river from Clinton, and I still have a good amount of family there. My father worked and lived in Davenport for a while...

Do not besmirch the Assumption coach. By the way, I'm yet another from D'port. I went to West although many of my friends and several family have gone to Assumption. I find they prefer Ass High.

Pete was my canoeing partner in gym class up here, which was comical because we had a good 80 pound weight difference and nearly swamped it during finals.
Canoeing in gym class?

CCA: I'm also from Davenport, even wrestled at Assumption....go Brody...
I just realized Grothus was from Assumption. Iowa in general and Davenport Assumption in particular has a long history of poaching stud wrestlers from Illinois. A few kids that I coached at the kids level (Nick Georgean, Tony and Tionte Parks) went to Assumption.

Plenty of schools recruit. Assumption is an easier place to do so due to being private, next to a bordering state and having good room experience.

GG small world indeed, don't know your age but probably know a lot of people you know as I'm a west ender in DP. My wife of 10 years still says to me today is there anybody you don't know or that don't know you. When your the youngest of 8 kids total in your family I guess that makes a difference.

Pete Bush has been a long time friend of mind and Ed Grothus is a good friend also. Speaking of Ed, he got on the board the other day to read the 7 pages and then he text me with LOL as he got a big kick out of that. He's not a member but is able to check the wrestling board now and then so be careful what you say;) Great family the Grothus bunch.

Gobblin bunch is another great family as they sure love there hunting along with my brother.

How about the Davenporters or Quad Citians for that matter get together some time at the Circle Tap for beers and Ribs and don't worry there will be no retaliation for past arguments on the board:) Just kidding and of course MNHAWK after all he's our Godfather .

I'll set something up after the Holidays if some of you are interested.

Since the Davenport/Rock Island comparison has been made, I'll share some history. One of Olympic gold medalist Bill Smith's first jobs after graduating from ISTC was coaching at Rockie. In the late fifties or early sixties the Rocks and Davenport had a dual meet in Rock Island and according to a member of that Blue Devil team the guys from Illinois kicked butt. Both teams would go on to win their respective state championships that year. By the way - it's that job that kept Smith off subsequent Olympic teams.

To learn more about Iowa high school wrestling in that era go get your shoes fixed at Smitty's Shoe Repair on the square in Marion. Rich Foens, the owner, has a neat little wrestling museum in his shop. You'd better have a couple of free hours if you mention wrestling.

I live in Dport. Growing up in rural Iowa for most of my life, I've never heard of as much crime before I moved here. From litering to car theft and stories of gun shots on WQAD every other week, I took for granted the safety of small town Iowa. Dport is really spotty. You'll drive by a really nice neighborhood with well maintained yards one second and a split second later, you'll see rundown homes with trash.
The neighborhood by the colleges of all places are the worst. Just a year or more before I'm outta here.

I was typing a post as you were doing this one. As a St Ambrose alum (Class of '74 - and I went on the 6-year plan) I'm very familiar with the Circle Tap. We still have alumni homecoming functions there.

I understand MNHAWK's claim to being the Godfather, but how can James Brown not also be the Godfather? Huh! I feel good!

Shananigans use to be a fairly decent bar, no more. Why are you nesting down there Turk there's plenty decent places to live in DP

The Hooters in Davenport has some pretty darn attractive women working there.....
They like to play catch with frisbees & hula hoop later in the evening, which believe it or not, is fairly entertaining.

Originally I from a small town south of Des Moines. My gal and I decided to get away from the small town lifestyle/gossip and try something new. We thought moving to a Mississippi town would be cool and different. So we got a loft 2 blocks from the river. It certainly is different! İ know there is nicer places in DP but if we stay in the QC we will probably head to Bettendorf home of the strip malls and Pat Angerer!

I'm not from DP. Grew up in small town in North Central Iowa. I've lived all over. Okoboji, STL, San Antonio, Phoenix, Des Moines. Currently in Grand Rapids, MI. Which, before I moved here I thought Michigan was a hell hole. Western Michigan is unbelievable, especially if you like the outdoors. Fishing is amazing, deer hunting is ok for numbers, but nothing like Iowa for size. I just showed guys at work two deer that buddies shot a few weekends ago. One in Decorah area and other in Medpo. 17 point and I don't know what the other one was but it was HUGE.

I stopped in The Office for dinner and a beer while I was in DP. Friendly people.

I work in Muscatine, but thankfully don't live there. The south end is a toilet, but it reminds me a lot of some of the dingier areas in D Port. Don't get me wrong there are plenty of nice areas in both towns but river towns are river towns for a reason. Throw Burlington right in the mix as well.

Recruiting goes on at all schools especially in wrestling. We have covered this many times on this board but if you see a team come out of nowhere or are always tough there is probably a good reason for it. Either tradition from coaching and excellence or good recruiting/work out partners. Lets go Brody! Win Midlands and turn the rankings the Hawks direction.

Turk have buddy that is doing the same,he loves it. Do you ever go into "Me and Billies" ? Billie Collins is the owner, GREAT guy and nice Bar.

Willie I have been to Me and Billy's several times now with my lady. She loves it! Good food, good service. Little pricy but that's ok. İ prefer Mac's myself. I love their Steak Mac&cheese and wings.

Circle Tap does indeed have good ribs btw. I finally found a good Mexican restaurant. Nally's by Tappa's steakhouse. Yum!

Got drunk many a time in Mac's and the Mexican restaurant "authentic is the only way"

Assuming a post season round robin at a catch weight around 174 (Brody will still be giving up at least 20 lbs) I think Brody wins both matches. He wins by fall in the 1st period vs the Coach. Ditka is not mobile enough with bad hips and gets caught by a big move early. Brody then wins a comeback decision vs. Chuck Norris. Norris takes the early lead but having never been tested before quickly gasses and Brody wins in the third period with heavy hands and the superior conditioning built in the room.

So everyone who lives in downtown Davenport is on section 8? That's news to me!

Ive lived in Davenport my whole adult life and have never once, been asked for change or even remotely bothered by the homeless. Never had a vehicle broken into either... You must just have shitty luck or karma's just a fickle bitch.

I feel sorry for you if you have lived here your whole adult life. How horrible that must be. I spend a lot of time walking downtown and to the river to fish. People ask me for "a quarter" all the time. Maybe because you look like a fellow homeless man is why they have never asked you for money. And I suppose you have to own a decent vehicle in order to get it broken into. Just a thought

You've eaten too many of those fish you catch down on the levee...

The last time my four boys went to the quad cities and wrestled was when we came back from winter nationals last year in Blue Island. We destroyed everyone from the area. It made me wonder how the kids their do so well in high school. My boys are elite though. Bettendorf kids thought they were hot shit and got worked. It was a waste of time and almost a trophy hunt. Never again.

It ain't bad place dude... Great live and local music, Daytrotter, the best minor league ballpark in America, local breweries, the Bix, River Roots, Ribfest, Blackhawk Hotel, Adler Theatee, etc.. Downtown Davenport has gone through some major renovations over the last decade and is a pretty cool place to be... Believe it or not.

Well done... I'll give it a 10 on style points alone.
