DeVries NOT a candidate for Iowa job. Ben McCollum the next Iowa HC?

People didn't hate Lickliter because of the style he played. They hated him because he lost and was too lazy to leave town to recruit and he played his midget son. Winning is a style everyone appreciates.
this. I think I would rather have EM but the timing is rough as poster said. you either take DD now or you force EM to accept the job while still having to coach. Not a good option.
I think DD will be a better recruiter.

I don’t know that we can “count on a turnaround like WVU” for next year BUT once we know what the roster looks like I wouldn’t rule it out either……we aren’t going to improve by 10 more wins if that’s what you’re saying, but with the right roster…..maybe 4 more wins, and that probably puts us in the tournament.
Pitino and St John's sugar daddy took them from 18 to 20 and now 30 wins this year. So it is written..... 😆

We're getting a new Pope too?!

The concern I have with DeVries, is his teams seem to wither at times. Twice Drake has blown late leads in the ncaa tournament (one of which was an epic choke job where his players flat-out panicked), and this year WVA faded, going 6-9 down the stretch.

You don’t see a McCollum team panic.
Going 6-9 without their best player…
Whoever is picked will get picked over by many here because that is what Hawkeye fans do as well as anyone…..piss and moan about everything!

Let Beth do what she needs to do….there will be plenty of opportunity to rip her a new one down the line. And then maybe….just maybe, she might make the right choice!

Virginia sports writer candidates for new coach.

1. Ryan Odom, VCU
2. Ben McCollum, Drake
3. Richard Pitino, New Mexico
4. Tony Skinn, George Mason
5. Niko Medved, Colorado State

Agreed. But I would hope she doesn’t panic and hire DD without taking to BMcC, Jans or someone else.

I don’t remember, but when Alford was hired was he plan A and B? Did they interview/talk to anybody else?

I never said I didn’t like DeVries, or intimated he would not be a good hire…….quite the opposite! I was merely expressing a concern, much like other fans question McCollum regarding recruiting.

Unless Beth hires some knucklehead (which I doubt), I will be on board.

What I heard elsewhere..take it with a grain of salt...

They raised the money for both buyouts, the new salary, and some for Carver renovations, in part from a new donor out of Arizona. Said Iowa wants to keep some of the future NIL money in house. Finally said discussions with DeVries hit a small sticking point, but expected it to be worked out soon.

I think Ben McCollum might be the better X and O basketball coach, but Darian DeVries would be the better program leader (fans, donors, engagement, media, etc.), and he's also a really good coach.
This is a good summary comparison between McCollum and DeVries. DD is the right guy.

Per a discussion w/ a contact (well connected business man in the community) in Applington-Parkersburg (DD's hometown of course) area, the IA and DeVries camps have been talking for months now. It has nothing to do with the relative timing of Drake still being in a tourney and WVU not. IA has had the money together for awhile to buy out DD contract and add to the NIL to make us competitive (something IA recognizes & DD insisted on). Furthermore, it sounds like the administration recognizes this is the time for a complete reboot on many fronts (marketing, student engagement, big donor funding, moving forward w/ CHA renovation, etc.) and has a good start on funding same.

This has been a done deal for sometime. There is a reason DD sat on the WVU extension for half the season. I'd be stunned if this info isn't essentially correct.

DD will be an outstanding coach here at IA to take us to the next level. He's an Iowa guy through and through. As others have said, this is his dream job.

I've heard the same thing aside from the "small sticking point" between camps.

I’m sold!👍

Heard he purchased a lawn mower. The guy that sold it to him was impressed he didn’t try and get it for free because of who he is. Or something like that….😉jk
