Drake Ayala to Iowa

And now let's begin the debate. Who was better?

Ayala or Teske?

If Teske can make 125 the same time Drake hits the lineup we can maybe find out but I think Teske and 125 have said their goodbyes, as of now I'd hope a highly ranked recruit with a size advantage and having been in high end college rooms for 2 seasons would be better.

You’re kidding right?

Drake is likely a career 125 pounder. Schriever is a little harder to tell, but 133 would be my guess.

Ayala has the Fargo chops
Thanks for the info. So are we thinking Shriever at 133 and Drake at 125 in college?

2021-2022

125-Ybarra
133-Schriever

2022-2023

125-Ayala
133-Ybarra/Schriever
141-Henson/Schriever

If anything, Ybarra has better credentials than Ayala or Schriever. Had he wrestled 120 this year, he would have been the #1 recruit but he wrestled up at 126. Having these guys are good problems to have. While there are no silver bullets (like Spencer), some damn good wrestlers coming in.

Chief - you have been high on Ybarra since early on and I know you did this before. But can you give a brief refresher on his strengths and weaknesses. And also who he reminds you of in terms of style, body type, etc. thanks buddy.

Schriever

That’s SCARY Good lower weights. Did I miss anyone?

Definitely with you in thinking Ybarra is a stud but is that accurate, particularly when it comes to Ayala? Honestly do not know.

Schriever gets 100% healthy and tip top shape after 1 year in the wrestling room I think we ALL know it’s “LOOK OUT”.

The Iowa room is a rough and tumble place. It will be interesting to see how they approach Schriever and his history of injury.

I think everyone involved has concerns about CS... physically. From my understanding, he hasn't been 100% for a couple years. And shoulder injuries are tricky.

Somewhere down the line, he's got the length to be 141, imo.

As others have noted... the lighter weights are solid for the forseeable future.

Congrats.
As a Buckeye, I was really hoping to land him. Looks like he has a bright future and will fit perfectly in your lineup at 125 after Spencer Lee graduates.
Reminds me a bit of Paddy Gallagher's recruiting. Both he and Ayala were down to Iowa and tOSU and each ultimately chose the home state school.
Agreed and also the reason I wish the state of Iowa would produce more like him. Huge recruiting advantage.

In many cases, it's hard to duplicate the recruiting advantage of having elite recruits within a reasonable driving distance.

Obviously the high end programs can do it, but other programs will struggle pulling kids in.

I can think of two programs that have that advantage right now. And 3 traditional powers that don't.

Ybarra has taken down some studs along the way. I think Ayala's best win to date has been Joey Cruz or Jeremiah Reno IIRC. Jesse has taken out Reno (plus Rathjen on the same night at Agony), Bouzakis, Lamer a few times, Burks X 2, Crookham plus a few more. He won Cadet Fargo at 120 2018 and took second to Robert Howard at UWW last year. This isn't to put down Ayala as I love his offense and pace...a potential horse.

IMO, Jesse (like RBY for PSU) has a lot of upside once he gets into our room because he hasn’t had the daily workout partners that the Iowa kids have had...our guys (Schreivers, Ayala, and Rathjen) grew up training with each other. I am excited about all of them because they seem like eyes and ears open, mouth shut kind of kids which makes for solid progression.

Jesse's strengths is his positioning and ability to work out of tough spots...he doesn't panic or get flustered. IMO, this is something guys have trouble with in college because they are used to being the badass wherever they wrestle. Guys tend to get lazy towards the end of matches...Jesse does not. Solid tactical thinking during his matches. His style will make for a good college wrestler. I think his weakness would be creating his own leg attacks against top guys. If he is able to, watch out. If I had to pick a wrestler to compare him to, it would be Lugo.

Thanks Chief as always great info. Sorry for making u probably type it for the third time! Be very interesting to see how the low weights shake out coming up but we know the rolling partners and coaching will be crazy good.
