Fran is excited

I was at the game last night and all the Marquette fans were talking about how well Iowa moved the ball. They were pretty impressed.

Fran has been very quiet about this team, which is unusual. Me thinks that he has a LOT of confidence in them and what they are going to do. He has won a conference title at every school he has been at. The man knows how to coach and how to win.

We are deep again and this team can shoot! Better than last year? Time will tell but sure looks that way.

fran must have really challenged his team after that augustana game... like challenge their manhood type of challenge, because they look (sound on radio) nothing like that team from two weeks ago. love me some fran!
I can't remember the poster but there was at least one (probably more) talking after the Augastana game about he was glad it happened and really thought it might be the wake up call the team needed. Show the upper class men you still have to work and the young guys that nothing is easy at this level. Hope they keep working hard and improving.

With 5 upper classmen leading the way I expect Iowa to be better than what the pundits have predicted. And I agree with the poster who said Fran must have challenged them. Either that or Augie is in the wrong division.

Augustana must be really, really good. I say that with all seriousness.
Nope - Augie is a good team for their level but the Hawks just thought they had to show up. It was a wake up call and it looks like they learned their lesson. Iowa wins by the same margin or more if they played Augie last night.

By the way, Augustana lost their first real game of their season to a team named the Washburn Ichabods.

The exhibition for Iowa means nothing, in the long run. Using it as a wakeup call/motivation can be a good thing.

Hawks struggled in both exhibitions. Probably a combo of allot of factors, seems to be behind them now.

Don't sleep on the Bods! I went to law school there. But yeah, that exhibition was just a fluke. And better yet, it didn't cost us anything unlike Wisconsin.

Iowa played great but let's not downplay how bad Marquette played last night. To me, Iowa is still a middle of the road B1G team until they prove they can beat a good team on a night they're playing their A game. If Iowa can pass the ball and get open looks from three all year look out.

Augie was rated #1. It doesn't matter so much that they're DII. They're of the best at what they do. And it showed. They weren't slouches.

And our play/coaching was a major, major reason they were so bad last night.

And our play/coaching was a major, major reason they were so bad last night.

It was a reason. I saw a Marquette team just going through the motions especially on defense. They didn't try to stop anything we did. They didn't anticipate anything, jump in the passing lanes, force us into tough spots on the floor, slap at the ball, bump us when cutting through the lane, etc. These are what good teams, especially in the B1G do well. They stop all flow to the offense. I know the rules have supposedly changed this year but I'll have to see it against the likes of Wisconsin and Mich. St. to believe it.

Iowa took Ellenson completely out of the game right away by doubling down every time he touched it. He was frustrated from the git.

You could see it on his face. It shook their whole team because they didn't have a counter option AND during that time out showing "wojo" stuttering and stammering and unable to give ANY coaching of any kind, shows how shocked they were.

Iowa's plan was flawless.

I think after this game you will see the younger guys buying into what the older guys are doing. Our Seniors just put on a clinic last night and showed those youngsters what happens when you execute the game plan. They showed the new guys how to act when you go on the road. Great learning experience for all the freshmen.

couldn't agree more Hoop. It is exciting to see what Fran has done with Iowa BB and the foundation he has established.

Looked great and played well.

Ball sticks a bit with the subs versus the outstanding flow from the starters.
We still need work on the offensive glass and I wonder what our D looks like if the other team has an outside game.

Love the early edge we have due to experience we have starting. That edge will lessen as the season wears on, but our subs will be better too. 50% on the 3 ball made us look awesome, but we still have plenty to work on for BIG play

All in all we played great, built a ton of confidence, and the new kids are starting to get it figured out. Limited minutes from the starters will help with the tournment coming up.

This makes us all ready for more hoops.

Bardo summed up that early in the game when he talked about young teams that aren't having good offensive nights struggle defensively.
Fran and staff schooled that pud, yes he's a pud.

Haven't heard anyone mention Fleming's play, but it was by far his best game overall. He had a much better floor game than the previous games, even though his stat line might not be that impressive. He was moving the ball on offense, and didn't chuck any shots, like he had learned last year.

Wagner did not have his best game, but that might be an indicator that Marquette's bigs were better than you might have thought watching them against Uthoff and Woody.

A good coach uses 'exhibitions' to work on the weaker aspects of the teams' offensive/defensive areas, not to pummel them with the things they already are doing well.

It's not that Fran didn't want to play to win, but it was more important to focus on development than scoring points in a pre-season game.

From what I've heard, Augie came out in that game against Washburn like you guys came out in your game against us. Only, as noted, our loss actually did count.

Glad to see you guys are off to a strong start this year. Whether or not it meant anything to you guys, our matchup with the Hawkeyes meant something to our team/fans/boosters. And it looks like it at least might've contributed to some of the Hawkeye players taking this season a little more seriously than they had been, which is probably good for you guys and us.

On a side note, we bounced back from our loss against Washburn by beating the #14 D2 team in the country last night--on a buzzer-beater three-pointer from Jansen with 0.5 left on the game clock. Not a bad year so far from him when it comes to clutch shots.

MrAugie, welcome and thanks for dropping in. I'm sure you guys gained a lot of hawk fans like myself that will be following Augie after the game you brought. Good luck to your team.

I thought Wagner was fine, he's a freshman. And the things he did last night were things he won't continue to do. It's almost like he's growing in to his body as a D1 player and once he's adjusted, 10 games, all season ? Who knows but whenever it clicks he's going to be a monster.

It was more about the team looking as if Fran had put them through an 8 hour practice immediately prior to the game. We could have lost to at least 200 schools on that night.

I've watched three out of the last four exhibition games and am convinced Fran makes them play these with very tired legs

The Augustana game provided two things: (1) An example for Coach McCaffery show the players what happens if you take an opponent lightly and figure you just have to show up to win, and (2) a game for Clown fans to point at and laugh to make themselves feel better about being little brother.

Because hes not going to be a factor this year one way or the other.
