Spencer is talking about himself as a competitor. It's a good mindset to have. Fans are allowed to say "it's unfortunate for Spencer and fortunate for Gilman that Spencer was injured and unable to compete at trials".
Either way, congrats to Gilman, he got the job (mostly) done vs international competition and won bronze. I personally don't think he'd be there if Spencer were healthy. Looking forward to them wrestling next summer hopefully.

I’m not condoning all the comments in this thread and others but at the same time, most of them were in response to Gilman’s public comments that were completely unnecessary.
Would you agree that Gilman displayed unnecessary vitriol towards Tom, Terry and Spencer?

Only in this moment are we acting like the internet should be classy in its response.

You know you could resolve/prevent this by just quoting the exact posts that you think are distasteful and responding with your opinion to those people directly? Rather than vaguely criticizing the entire forum/fanbase.
Thomas definitely deserves some of the criticism he gets (by a handful of fanbases/opponents) for things he's said and done. He seems like a great guy deep down. Just diehard committed to the sport of wrestling and has got what he's earned every step along the way.
I'm happy for him that he won an Olympic medal. I'm not happy that he's wrestling for the NLWC now and that it didn't work out for him at the HWC, but it seemed inevitable at some point there would be a clash and it wouldn't make sense for him to stick around if he didn't think he had the full support of the team or if he had better funding options elsewhere. I don't know the details, but it doesn't take an insider to know that Spencer Lee was likely the catalyst of Gilman leaving (in addition to Perry's departures). I think all hawk fans are pretty damn content with that tradeoff.
Life isn't black and white. Hawk fans can both be happy for Gilman and also criticize some of the things he's said about the program or the way he comes across publicly (tweeting in all caps when a PSU wrestler beats his former Hawkeye teammate at nationals) for example. He's a hypocrite, most of us are hypocrites, you're a hypocrite. Get off your high horse and recognize there's some nuance to the situation and it's not all going to be ponies and rainbows. At the end of the day, congrats to Gilman, I think most of us are happy for him individually.
