Helene models….without looking, not sure how far ahead of landfall these are. Red dot is probably closest to the official landfall point, though landfall was pretty much simultaneous there to around Steinhatchee.
I have read historical records going back to the 1500’s that include early Spanish accounts of hurricanes. Countless shipwrecks off the Florida coasts including Spanish Galleons with gold and treasure from Mexico abound.
These storms are not a recent phenomenon caused by climate changes. I’m not a denier but I prefer a review of the facts and the fact is that hurricanes have always been around.
One other fact is that we have more damage and loss of life because we have TOO MANY PEOPLE HERE.
In 1970 we had about ten million people here and now we’re on track to hit 25 million by the middle of the decade. And we had miles of shoreline where there were no houses or high rise condos.
We had millions of acres of wetland that have since been filled in and built on.
Milton is set to go over land that used to be largely agricultural. Orange groves and cattle ranches.
Now it’s a mouse and a million golf carts.
Do you think climate change is real and happening now?
Did I not just write that I am NOT a denier?Do you think climate change is real and happening now?
The climate has ALWAYS been changing. There is no "normal"... it's a dynamic system.
Did I not just write that I am NOT a denier?
I think Planet Earth is in charge and changes itself. But I think we need to be careful and take care of the place, you know? We’re just passing through and living in an enormous rental. Our landlord is reminding us we have to take care of the property.
That is just so emotionally draining. Sorry for all these folks.
Yes and it's being caused now by human activity.

A mega volcano could instantly reverse all this warming.
It really is. I share your sentiment. 😟That is just so emotionally draining. Sorry for all these folks.
It’s not the number of Hurricanes, it’s the number of Major storms with catastrophic damage from storm surge and wind. We all know Tropical Storms and Cat 1 / 2 hurricanes were a part of life if you lived in Florida as were the much more rare major storms.I have read historical records going back to the 1500’s that include early Spanish accounts of hurricanes. Rush Limbaugh, Glenn Beck, Hannity, Bill O, Tucker, etc... Four decades of conspiracies and owning Libs.I'm just curious.
I know most Republicans don't believe in climate change or science, for that matter.
We have NO idea if storms back then were Cat 1 or Cat 5. I am in my 70’s and I grew up here. One hurricane on the First Coast in 1964 (Dora) and some minor brushes or TD’s and SoFla had more. SWFla had none. Now it’s the Gulf acting up more with the Atlantic trending to more fish storms. It’s not the number of Hurricanes, it’s the number of Major storms with catastrophic damage from storm surge and wind. We all know Tropical Storms and Cat 1 / 2 hurricanes were a part of life if you lived in Florida as were the much more rare major storms.
But the evidence is undeniable now the major storms are way way more frequent. In 173 years of recorded history there were 30 major hurricanes between 1851 and 2003. That is about 1 every 5.07 years, so just under 2 a decade.
Since 2004, Milton will become our 11th major landfall in 20 years. That’s averaging a major hurricane more frequent than even every other year…every 1.81 year…and trending up. So we are moving toward a major hurricane with the catastrophic damage that comes to soon being an every year issue when it use to be a twice a decade thing.
Also if you look at just CAT 4/5 it is 5 in 20 years and 11 in the previous 152 before that. Climate change is majorly impacting florida due to the major storms not the frequency.
And this has always been the predicted outcome of global warming. Everything is more extreme. The hurricanes. The tornadoes and sever thunderstorms. The floods. The droughts. And yes the blizzards too. Which is not all that shocking if you heat up the earths moisture a bit…it was an easy thing to predict.
I think Earth’s climate is changing and would be changing if there were zero humans. Just ask the dinosaurs. Oh wait…we can’t. Something about a meteor. Beyond their control. Beyond ours too.
That's not the scientific consensus.

We do have estimates of strength based on recorded barometric pressure and accounts of damage. Florida has been overbuilt a long time. There is a reason all of our home owners insurance doubled the last 3 years and will double now again in the next 3. This is simply not normal and was predicted. Just like the floods in North Carolina mountains nobody had flood insurance for. Just like the derechos in Iowa. Just like the Midwest like tornadoes in Tallahassee this spring. Just like the dozens killed in a fire in Hawaii….and on and on. Climate change is showing up in the form of much more extreme weather. We have NO idea if storms back then were Cat 1 or Cat 5. You surely realize that the increase in population and the number of people and the structures we build to support us now make instant news?
Wide swaths of America that were open prairie or shore or forest in the 40’s and 50’s now have humans living there. We have instant knowledge of a Kansas twister and the aftermath. We didn’t have that 100 years ago.
I think Earth’s climate is changing and would be changing if there were zero humans. Just ask the dinosaurs. Oh wait…we can’t. Something about a meteor. Beyond their control. Beyond ours too.
Completely normal. There always have been Hurricanes.

It's going to run across Orlando, too. Head to Tally.
Orlando should be fine. It's 40 miles inland and on the opposite side of the state.
No. Hurricane Ian was terrible all up and down the I-4 corridor with damaging winds and devastating interior flooding all the way to Daytona. And the beach side suffered significant erosion and property damage from backside storm surge.
This is shaping up the same way.
Be safe! Or stop at JReed (Pensacola) or DFS (DeFuniak Springs) and hang out until Thursday?Crap. I’m in Alabama and set to drive home tomorrow. Great.
Kennedy Space Center will take a hit. 🚀The impact in coastal Volusia and Brevard will be worse than Orlando, even though the storm is making landfall on the west coast. Being on the coast makes a difference even when it's the opposite coast.
