Hurricane season has arrived....

This is what I don’t get about people who often get storms. We get typhoons all the time. We had a cement house built with typhoon shutters for the windows and garage door. Its been several years and only damage has been debris from neighbors wood house, breaking one of our security cameras. We have generators that work off of propane and normal gas so no power issues. We would love to get the solar roof, but we live in the middle of the ocean, so no chance of being available here.

Looks like the storm has already dropped around 20 inches of rain over many heavily populated areas in Central Florida.

Tampa Electric outage site.

Not when you build on the Gulf of Mexico and experiencing those type winds at some point is a reasonable expectation.

It was probably a $$$ decision.
Absolutely it was a money decision and it turned out to be good decision if this is the first time there was damage.

I think it's worth criticizing if it was going to be used in a Emergency Management situation.

If that was part of the deal when the stadium was funded...it was the wrong decision.

With daybreak I hope we start seeing some positive reports.

I mean this with the best of intent, listening to the news as it hit last night it sounded like the best possible.outcome from a hit/surge/speed perspective. Milton died on its way in. Again, that doesn't mean I don't understand it was still devastating but this thing was a cat 5 two days ago.

I would hope they did some type of stress-testing after what happened Superdome and to the Metrodome. No, it wasn't snow (like the Metrodome) and it doesn't have a concrete roof (like in NOLA), but that wind and rain carries a low of power and weight when it hits. If they ignored it, then they totally dropped the ball and potentially put hundreds/thousands of lives at risk. Heads should (deservingly) roll.

My guess is that they did some stress-testing at some point prior.

Looks pretty manageable north of the Skyway bridge. Early morning photos rolling in from some of my Facebook groups show some heavy wind damage but no major surge. Streets are completely clear of sand and drivable minus the debris. But hard to even tell what's new debris and what migrated from last weeks piles....

Watching one of the local stations this morning and one of the guys said Tampa Bay did not get a real surge in the bay and in fact at one point the bay had a reverse surge? Interesting if true.

That's exactly right. Because the storm came in south of the bay, the winds were from the east, pushing water out of the bay.

@bins, why the laugh?

Mops

Where are all the mops?

Folks dealing w/ the California wildfires were criticized for not using their rakes; why aren't Floridians getting out their damn mops!!???
Because you can't really mop something that isn't there ahead of time?

They were on the leeward side of the wind, due to Milton passing to the south.

If it had gone north of TB, the entire bay would have piled up with water and they'd have had the 10-12' surges.
