Egregiously bad coaching. Let the best player of the first half rot on the bench for 19 minutes of the second half.

Shooting was the primary issue. Iowa had looks that could have kept them in the game. Illinois only getting called for 4 fouls in the 2nd is absolutely ridiculous. I'm not sure any Big 10 team can make it through a half with only four fouls and certainly not one of the more physical teams in the conference.
Have you watched the ncaa tournament before?
The reffs call nothing.
Illinois will get beat by some mid major that plays twice as physical as they do.

This has not been my experience at all. Quite the opposite. I feel like a lot of Big 10 teams struggle because they can't play as physical.
Even if the Hawks don't shit the bed vs Minnesota on Thursday night, Illinois is gonna wipe the floor with them again on Friday.

61 pts today is the season low. Falling behind 30-9 out of the gate is a bad look.
I've seen it go the other way- the B1G lets the Aaron Craft's of the world get away with beating the snot out of people and then the B1G (usually) flops in the NCAA's because it's more of a finesse / guard's game.
This was absolutely a classic example of Fran in an elimination games.
Usually that's in a tournament setting but this was a rare chance to play an elimination game at home and they still choked.

Yes, under Fran, he always allow his seniors or veterans to play that many minutes win or lose, that's why he's lost double digits every year at Iowa except once. It's the Fran McCaffery way.

I got corrected before by a Fran fan---in Fran's 28 years of coaching he is is 0-27 in making a sweet16, not yet 0-28. Things do look bleak for Iowa making the sweet16 this year so he likely willl be 0-28. I think his approach to B-ball is fundamentally flawed in not focusing enough on defense/rebounding/getting stops so that is why his teams are DOA when they do make the NCAA tourney. His record in NCAA tourney play is 6-12. Hard to make a run in NCAA when you only win 1/3 your games in NCAA tourney play.
Even if Perkins doesn't return, we do have a good core returning but of course lack athleticism at the guard positions. Brock needs to start making his circus shots in the lane and shoot the 3ball well...he does everything else well.
IF PMAC comes back, it will be a kick in the nuts. So glad Jack is going elsewhere and he will get to experience the level playing field/treatment that he and his family think hasn't been afforded to the previous two Fran boys.
Fran can finally manage the team for wins instead of maximizing his boys playing time.
