Iowa versus PSU - dual thread

Do Parco, Caliendo and Teemer recover from this and look better in the NCAAs?
Parco needs to get in far better shape in a little over a month if he's going to hang with van Ness. He looked gassed midway thru the 2nd and had nothing in the 3rd. Sure hope he's not coasting and just cashing a big check this season but it kind of looks like it.
Caliendo will be lucky to keep it under a tech vs Mess, he's not human.
Teemer can and should beat Kasak when it counts. He's still not in great shape after the layoff but he's the better wrestler.

Isn’t it crazy to read this and think damn it’s so accurate. Like this is one our best lineups and we aren’t close. They legit have 7-8 finalist potentials.
Had to be how teams felt in the mid 80s and early 90s. But this is on another level. Dual streak at 66 now with no end in sight. Erasing Gable era nationals records and achievements.

They've had a nice kicker from covid era garbage but still at a level we've never seen before...and ran a team with the potential for 8 AA out of the gym.

Carl hates losing and will do whatever and I mean whatever it takes to prevent that. Anytime in the past his program showed any kind of vulnerability or didn't get it done he upped the stakes. Since the 2020/2021 time frame he taken it to a level of untouchable. Whatever that whatever may be he has found a way to do it.

Kasak and Block were pretty darn equal coming out and now look. Sure block had a knee but he still wouldn't be in the same area code. Kasak jumps into the lineup last year and goes from losing early to Rathjen to placing 3rd. Up a weight this year and legit title contender.

Sobering.

They don't have a freaking clue on the world stage who Cael Sanderson is. He's a nobody.
You think world champions follow Cael Sandersons college coaching. Lmao.
Name a coach from a college wresting team in Russia brilliant one?
You think Iran and Russia are impressed that he went undefeated in college and won four NCAA championships. 🤣🤣🤣
Carl is great in the USA college wrestling world, World stage, he's a nobody. They all know who David Taylor is.
Funny thing is, they don't even know where he went to college, and don't give a shit.
Do you know where Yazz, Sadulaev etc... wrestled in college.
I don't.
Case and point.
Carl is a nobody on the world stage. Dime a dozen.

Is that why Ono is in the student directory at Penn State?

Cael one Olympic gold one silver world championship.
Taylor one Olympic Gold, three world golds, one silver, one bronze.
Not even close.
Cael is a nobody on the world stage compared to Taylor.
Sadulaev and Yazz wouldn't even recognize Carl on the street. Lol
Really Carl?
Cael retired in his prime to pursue his passion Coaching. Cael > Gable, then there is that. Lol

I’m actually fairly impressed with how the cesspool has taken this beat down as a whole. Any Hawk fan knew what was coming and were surprised by nothing that happened last night. However once the asshats from PSU showed up to puff out their chests that’s when things went downhill. I actually appreciate the contributions of a few of the Lion faithful but not one of them ever comes on to criticize one of their own and it gets REALLY tiresome and annoying! Try to be better PSU. (I know the ones I’m talking about won’t but here’s hoping 🤞)

PSU fans showed their true colors at the OTTs. God forbid, someone dare criticize a member of the PSU cult. They were vicious to a guy who had been the face of USA wrestling for 15 years!

I'm sure Gabe took plenty of abuse last night, given the situation that was to be expected. But I'm guessing they were brutal based on his reaction.

Many of us could probably tell you all about the first part of that plan. 🙁
I'm being sarcastic of course but as others have said, something is off. Sure Haines is unique bc he was sucked down last year and the total weight gain probably was 10-15 lbs. But there's just been so many of them that have bumped weights, added crazy muscle mass, and actually gotten quicker, more flexible etc... Kasaks athleticism and strength when he got beat by Rathjen last yr was 50% of what it is now. Starocci is up 10 lbs and still probably the strongest guy in the weight class. It's just crazy.

Kemerer sat out a year before making that jump iirc.
Injury. Here are interviews with him discussing jumping two weight classes in one offseason:

And P.S. everyone likes and respects Kem. Everyone. So don’t take me referencing him the wrong way. You point to Kem in an argument because you know no one thinks poorly of him.

Nobody wants to hear from frickin Jam

No matter what happens here. I like Ferrari a lot! Tons of potential!
I agree, but your wrestler seemed to be coached to "slow down" this match.... Starocci has proven over the years that he will let other wrestlers chose their poison (in this case defensive) and then beat them at their own game. You're also correct, Ferrari stood flat footed OOB and much of the time one one/both knees... Refs tend to pull the trigger on stall calls much faster when the objective to slow down the match is this obvious. That said Ferrari was effective in keeping it close and holding it to a regular decision. Enjoy your common sense posts here and on the PSU board.

You talk like Penn State is Cabo San Lucas or something. I've been to your area , not much going on there either. What exactly is there to do where you live? Hunt squirrels? Lol
So, just to answer your question... From a "drive-time" perspective, State College is centrally located (<= 4 hours) from NYC, Wash DC, Pittsburgh, Philly, Cleveland, and Baltimore, so most large cities in the northeast. Not to mention, some of the greatest fishing and hunting (deer, bear, turkey). At a benefit golf tournament, one of the auction items was a day fishing with Levi. How many cities > 500K are within 4 hours oF IC?

The nearest major city to State College is Philly (3.5-hour drive). (You could claim Pittsburg--that's still 3 hrs.) The nearest major city to Iowa City is Chicago (3-hr drive). So the reality is that both are close to nothing. At least Iowa City is close to an airport from which you can fly to any major city in the US in the same amount of time it would take me to drive from NYC to State College.

But who cares? There are good things about both towns.

I agree, but was just responding to Sett's questions.... Almost everyone likes where they call "home"...

These kids aren't going to look at the Liberty Bell. Iowa has some of the best bird hunting in the country as well as deer. Most are very well traveled In getting to this level and have been to many major cities.

We used to call State College, a ‘suburb of nowhere’, when I was up there 30 years ago. It is every bit as rural and remote as IC.

Yea...both McHenry and Cruz would fit in at the old 118 very well.
Back in 1948 the NCAA's lightest weight class was 114.5! That would have been perfect for McHenry. I would imagine some 125 guys are walking around off season at 140+. Here is some interesting info on changes to the lightest NCAA weight over the years:

How have the weight classes changed?

From 1928-1930, the lightest weight class in the NCAA tournament was 115 pounds, with Oklahoma State's Harold DeMarsh and Illinois' Joe Sapora winning those combined first three titles. The 118-pound division took over as the lightest weight class in 1931, 1933, 1934, 1935, 1937, 1938, and then again from 1970-1998. In 1948, Purdue's Arnold Plaza won the 114.5 weight division in the only year that such a light weight class existed. Other discontinued light weight classes included 121 and 123-pounds. The current light weight is 125 pounds.

And even the reverse. Haines, who is not typically a scrambler, looked so comfortable defending the crackdown. PSU guys never look uncomfortable.
The national champion Haines who moved up 2 weight classes in 6 months, and scrambled toe to toe with KOT isn't a scrambler? He doesn't typically scramble because he doesn't typically have to.
However, you may have outdone yourself with the comparison of Block and Kasak.
Kasak rated top 10. Kasak wrestled college opens in 2023 losing 1 OT match. Meanwhile Block had weak Iowa high school competition followed up by a year of rehab. Block hasn't even had a chance to get his feet wet and be healthy for a year, let alone wrestle at what is likely his ideal weight. Comparing those two is asinine. Similar to your Haines statement.

Old hiker’s take: Angelo’s an ‘as advertised’ phenom and ready now. A true frosh not being taken down by Carter is amazing. NIL softens the wait, but if he asks to go shirtless for a shot at derailing a legend, I let him. For team dynamic, though, redshirt’s the right move. Hawks would have an odds-on champion favorite the next 4 years. More than Gabe or Ben, Angelo’s the foundation for improving the team and its open sore . . . recruiting.
I like PK. He showed both Kharch and Levi he’s a tough out, and I believe he’s a sleeper for AA 4 or 5. Buchanan’s a legit #1 and will meet the kid again. Parco and Teemer will be fine and formidable, but Cali is wrestling’s Alydar (those my age understand).
Hawks are nation’s solid #2 team. I think they prove it against DT’s Cowboys.

Can I get an ‘h’ please?
Thing is, we’re kindred in a way. My once formidable Steelers aren’t anywhere near competitive with the league’s elite and won’t be for years. But while their issue will NEVER be solved without a new coach who doesn’t pander to diva players, the Hawks still have a chance with TB. As most know, mercenaries are band-aids, recruiting is the cure. Ayala, Arnold, Angelo, Ben and Leo are good steps. More may come. Celebrate having hope.
With Tomlin, I have none.

Yeah, you’re demonstrating my point. Even a guy who very rarely scrambles is extremely comfortable scrambling because PSU guys are comfortable everywhere.

Carter didn’t take down freshman Rocco Welsh either last March (albeit while injured).

You couldn't be more wrong. First, they know Cael won an Olympic Gold Medal... The other coaches around the world do their homework on who beat who in America to make the team.... Such as, they start watching how Zane Richards beat Gilman to make the team in 2023 even if they were not familiar before with Richards.. Foreign coaches were well aware of Gilman, Snyder, Retheford, Dake, and Taylor and which room they were training in and who was coaching them... Just because you don't know where and with whom Sadulaev or Yazdani are training, does not mean other wrestlers and coaches around the world don't. You don't have a need or a reason to know, they feel like they do want to keep up on that.

And (yes, it is going to look like I am name dropping), I was in the sauna at the hotel at the non-Olympic weight World Championships, and Ono was in there with me and just one other guy (another American). Ono started striking up conversation. The first thing he said was, "Are you Americans?" The very next thing out out of his mouth, after I replied, "Yes," was, "After this, I am going to Penn State to train with Cael Sanderson at Penn State." (and he later said, "... after that I may go to Okie State." hOno actually did refer to it as "Okie." So I do not know who reached out to who first, let's say it is Cael and they contacted Ono and offered him some $ to come train there etc.. but he knew quite a lot...

I was very close to a former Soviet/Armenian World Champion/Olympian who competed in the early mid 90s, and knew about Gable. His coaches told him stories... My friend about crapped himself when he saw the Gable statue at Carver during the Olympic Trails, and he almost pissed himself when he met Gable in the concourse of Carver. To him, the stories of this American that won the World Championships and Olympics, beating Soviets, while also totally exhausting all of his opponents, was something of legend that they held in regard at a level that wold best be described as awe. "My coach told me about the American that trained 8 hours a day 7 days a week" were something of a legend, they had heard about. Btw, there are seven wrestlers from his hometown which is smaller than the Iowa City area (include Coralville, North Liberty), that have won Gold Medals at the World and / or Olympics since 1988, so it isn't like they needed to tell stories about Gable when they had this many wrestlers from one club having this type of success.
