Iowa versus PSU - dual thread

Seriously? PSU dominated.

I haven’t seen Iowa have a few guys show that type of wrestling- especially against starocci. A few more of those types , which is coming because a few schools are catching up with NIL (Penn state did for years prior to official NIL) and the Iowa & Okie States will have their turns again.

According to the six-year contract, which runs through March 31, 2030, Taylor is set to make $1 million the first year, followed by $30,000 raises each year after, putting Taylor’s contract at $1.15 million in the final year of the contract. The deal, which was signed by Taylor and administration this week, is worth $6.45 million total over six years. According to available public records, Taylor is now the highest-paid college wrestling coach in the country and is the first college wrestling coach to have a salary reach the $1 million threshold.

On top of the salary, Taylor will also have the opportunity for performance incentive bonuses. Those include $125,000 for an NCAA championship, $80,000 for a runner-up finish, $60,000 for a third-place finish and $10,000 for every individual NCAA champion. He will also get a one-time payment of $1 million.

Benefits also include a golf course membership, four tickets to OSU football games, the use of a luxury suite during wrestling duals, up to 12 tickets to wrestling duals and up to 12 tickets to postseason tournaments.

Here’s how the contract’s payout structure looks:

Year 1 (2024-25): $1,000,000
Year 2 (2025-26): $1,030,000
Year 3 (2026-27): $1,060,000
Year 4 (2027-28): $1,090,000
Year 5 (2028-29): $1,120,000
Year 6 (2029-30): $1,150,000

We brought in 3 top-3/4 guys this year and we're no closer than we were a year ago. And the PSU JV team would likely be a top 10 team right now. It feels like we are miles behind this PSU program.
PSU is just light years ahead, "top-3/4 guys" aren't going to do it when they have top 1/2 guys up and down their lineup. Just the truth. We're solidly the #2 and that's where we are for now.

At least we're not other programs where all they have left to hope for is Iowa losses, lol.

It's crazy to think Tom Ryan has won as many NCAA team titles as the Brands crew since 2011. That's a pattern.
So 3 coaches have won since 2011, I’m not understanding your point. Replace Brands and Caels dynasty is still steamrolling everyone. Do you think if we hired DT suddenly we are on PSU level again, OSU would be getting spanked just as bad if not worse.

Honestly, I was impressed with how our guys competed, but the talent gap is depressing. These next two recruiting classes are the keys if the Brands are going to stay.
Talent, technique, strength, conditioning, coaching. They have it all.

Iowa might be the clear number two team right now and they’re still miles and miles away from PSU. And it isn’t like PSU is a team full of Seniors. Half their lineup is Sophomores and Freshmen and they all look damn good and national champion threats right now.

It’s a huge hill to climb and IMO the Brands won’t be the ones to do it.

Brandsx2 will never change adapt or adjust. This will reoccur every yr until change comes at top. Love them as wrestlers. Great assts but times they are and have changed. Kids, training, etc all have passed them by. Unfortunate

The tell tale sign is when you have the same benefactor who throws money at these 5th or 6th year kids and they jump at it, yet young kids like Lilledahl, etc know where their future is best set and deny the free agency farce. NIL isn't a sustainable way to build a program in the sport of wrestling, but if they continue to believe that and get turned down by the top young kids, nothing will change. Honestly, I think most of the other top programs hope the Brands stay until they drop. I know it hurts, but the trajectory of UNI and Iowa State will continue to entice many of the kids who want to go to school in that area of the country. I love parody, but until there are major changes in the landscape of college wrestling, it just shows times have changed from the 80's and 90's.

I will say this, though that team from Penn State tonight, I don’t think would lose to an all national All-Star team

Those guys don’t grow on trees. Half of PSU’s lineup is underclassmen and they probably put on the best show this evening. Mesenbrink might be the best college wrestler in the country. Then there’s Blaze, Duke, Ryder, two Mirasolas waiting in the wings.

Iowa brought in 3 top 3 guys this year and still got destroyed this evening. You seriously think the Brands are going to have an epiphany after 18 years and somehow turn the tide in recruiting? It’s more likely to get worse than better. NIL or not.

You can think Brands are stale, but ISU and UNI programs are not passing Iowa. I don't deny Brands need better technicians coaching chain wrestling, but I lose zero sleep vs ISU's staff.

If anyone wants to make an official charge against PSU wrestling for steroid use, do it. Don’t hide behind some internet name using innuendo.
There is a little smoke based on circumstantial.
They NEVER gas. Cael doesn't have some secret conditioning formula that no other coach in D1 is aware of.
Not saying they are, just a little interesting.

Id take UNI HC now. All day long

I agree. I dont think PSU outwork our guys i think CS teaches to train smarter. Plus the mental advantage is big.

I thought we could possibly with stars aligned steal 5 matches but was holding out hope for 4 and praying no bonus points in 125 and HWT. The Parco and Caliendo scores shocked me the most 😮‍💨

Kudos to Cullan for fighting. It just shows us we need Jax, Bassett, the Rainey's and looking forward to what Angelo will rain down. About the only thing that will bring us even.

Ramos > LL
Crookham > Davis
Mendez > BB
Henson > SVN
Shapiro > Kasak
Caliendo <<<<< Mitchell
KOT > Haines
Keck < Starroci
Buchanan > Barr
Gable >>>>> Kerk
While I get your point the all star team is heavy favorites.
Thats possible but alot of those are toss ups

Good job breaking that down.

My informed uninformed view is that outside of Caliendo and Buchanan when he hits 5th gear is that we just have grinders. I'll take my lashes but is it a combination of the recruit we identify and mold so much that we rely on out mental our opponents? Spencer was a unicorn, it's just hard to see the weights that just turn it on relentlessly outside of Mikey and he ran into a buzzsaw. Some good things tonight and a lot not so much. I always support positively but I just like hearing from the cesspool without so much of the boiling pestilence 😂

Bringing in 3 top 3 guys is recruiting. You can call it whatever you want, but would you rather they hadn’t brought them in along with Ferrari? 4 studs in 1 year is better than everyone but you know who. But yeah, not beating the PSU freightrain means we blow it all up. Good luck with that.

I figured 133 and 197 were our wins coming in and that's what we got. That was an even bigger ass beating than I thought was going to happen and I had zero illusions about pulling any upsets. We literally didn't belong on the same mat as them at most of the weights. TnT are Carl's whipping boys. I honestly don't see anyone including us beating them ever again while Carl is there unless Taylor can get things rolling. Dudes got embarrassed out there. Angelo and Buchanan are the only two who manned up vs good competition. Drake got a pass vs an undersized 125 backup.

encouraging thoughts from tonight, atleast from some individuals

Drake seems healthy and i wonder why Davis was not out there....
Schriever, looked OK.
Buchanon was in control.

Teemer can win the rematch. Turns out Kasak was not putting on pressure and was super tight. Jacori just just needs to find his timing.

Parco can *possibly* turn the tables on Van Ness if he just stopped that shot that turned into the nightmare backpoints, Parco showed some offense in this match. Van Ness is an animal but Parco has the skills and counters to give SVN hell if he goes after Kyle like that.

I don't know what TnT will do with Ferrari, but I have a hard time seeing Angelo losing from here on out.
Agree but for Schreiver to get past being ok he will need to finish shots which historically he has not. Block pretty similar.
